Abstract

During May-June 2008 survey an individual Leopoldamys was caught withbicolored tail sharply demarcated between the upper and lower part from Haju Maruwaiarea in Kalimantan. Following this two more specimens from the MZB collection werefound with individual bicolor tails from Bukit Baka National Park West Kalimantan andCibodas Botanical Garden Gede Pangrango, West Jawa. Comparative study on theexternal characters and skull measurements with L. sabanus, L. edwardsi and L.siporanus from Kalimantan, Jawa and Sumatra and adjacent islands (using invariable, multivariate and discriminant analysis), revealed significant differences between thenew Leopoldamys sp and established L. sabanus, L. edwardsi and L. neilli from Jawa,Kalimantan, Sumatra and adjacent islands. On the basis of these characteristicdifferences we described it as Leopoldamys diwangkarai sp nov and its exposition isdiscussed.

Abstract

Study on species status of a rice yellow stem borer, Scirpophaga incertulas(Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) was conducted. The objectives of the study were to explorethe genetic variation among populations of S. incertulas in Java and to clarify itsspecies status based on CO I gene sequences. The results showed that from the entire680-bp region of sequences from10 population in Java, 99 % were constant. The averageof estimated sequence divergences in the comparisons among populations withinS.incertulas was very low about 0.01%. The base composition was slightly A+T biased(C:0.15) with G+C contents was 37.09%. The result of phylogenetic analysis showedthat S.incertulas is a single species with S.innotata as its sister group. The differenceson the body-size, black spot at female’s forewing, forewing length within S.incertulasare solely natural variation.

Abstract

The ant fauna of the Krakataus, and Sebesi and Sebuku islands, based oncollections made by RU in 2005 by intensive sweep-netting are reported. Thirty-sevenspecies of ant were collected on the Krakataus (Rakata, Sertung, Panjang, and AnakKrakatau), 15 species on Sebesi, and 4 species on Sebuku. The ant species diversity onAnak Krakatau (20 species) was remarkably more diverse than those known from Rakata(15 species), Sertung (13 species), and Panjang (12 species). The ant species distributionon the Krakataus is discussedants
