Abstract

The recent studies were carried out in 1992-1994, and aimed at investigating recent status and distribution of the avifauna of Siberut Island. Ninety-six species were recorded during the observations, of which all endemic subspecies and one endemic species were observed. From all species, 11.5% were very common and 37.5% were common in the island, while 28.1 % of them were uncommon and22.9% were rarely found. Protected and endemic species were amongt the rarely found birds, except the nectar feeding birds which were abundant in the island. Most of these birds might have functioned as either secondary or tertiary consumers, which are vulnerable to habitat deterioration. Habitat conservation may be the best measures to be considered.

Abstract

Sphenomorphus puncticentralis m.sp. is described based on a single specimen from Baturaden, Central Java, and is considered to belong to the variegatus species. The scincid lizard genus Sphenomorphus is represented by five species, i.e. S. temmincki, S. recopinatum, S. vanheurni, S. florensis and S. sanctum. The occurence of a new species in Java seems to be unlikely. However, during a field trip to Central Java in 1979, a skink specimen was collected, captured on a small tree in an open secondary forest during morning hours. The skink turned out to be an undescibed species of the genus Sphenomorphus. Effort to get additional specimens, a second trip to the same locality in 1986 failed since the original habitat has changed into' an Agathis forest. Despite of scarcity of specimens description is given hereunder based on a single specimen. This new skink is described as Sphenomorphus puncticentris based on the presence of the black spot on the dorsal scales on the paravertebral line region.

Abstract

The basic aim of this paper is to present a synthesis of the field work that we have been conducting on the positional behavior of orang-utans. The data have been collected from two study sites, of which one was at Ketambe, Gunung Leuser National Park, northern Sumatra and the other at Mentoko, Kutai National Park, eastern Kalimantan. We attempt to interpret positional behavior in an ecological context, and we evaluate several hypotheses, some of which can not be tested conclusively at the present time.

Abstract

anus ecarinatus, n.sp., is described from western Kalimantan, Indonesia,This is the first record of the family Cephidae for Indonesia, the most southern in Asia, and one of the few know from the Southern Hemisphere. The absence of a genal carina and the long cercus are two of the significant characters that separate it from other species of Janus.
