Abstract

Adolescence is a critical developmental stage that requires adequate nutritional intake to support physical, mental, and social growth. However, many adolescents adopt unhealthy eating behaviors influenced by trends, peer pressure, and limited nutritional awareness. This study analyzed the influence of attitude, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, purchase intention, and nutritional awareness on the purchase behavior of nutritious food and beverages among adolescents in Makassar. Using a cross-sectional research design, data were collected from 119 students at SMA 10 Makassar through a structured questionnaire. Logistic regression analysis revealed that attitude (COR = 10.41, p = 0.001) and purchase intention (COR = 12.22, p = 0.001) significantly affected nutritious food purchasing behavior. Meanwhile, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, and nutritional awareness did not show significant effects. These findings highlight the importance of developing youth-oriented nutrition programs that strengthen positive attitudes and purchasing motivation toward nutritious food products.

Abstract

Infection prevention and control (IPC) represents a critical priority in healthcare delivery, with hand hygiene serving as a key quality indicator. This study aimed to profile hand hygiene compliance at Clinic X in Makassar City. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted involving 32 healthcare staff, including clinicians, allied health professionals, and support staff, selected through total sampling. Data collection employed direct observation using a standardised checklist based on the WHO "Five Moments" framework and the six-step hand hygiene technique. The overall hand hygiene compliance rate was 96.05%. Moment-specific analysis revealed perfect compliance (100%) after contact with patients, body fluids, and patient surroundings. However, compliance before patient/specimen contact was 91.5%, and notably, no hand hygiene opportunities were observed before aseptic procedures during the study period. Alcohol-based hand rubs were the predominant method (84.47%) compared to handwashing with soap (15.53%). Despite exemplary overall compliance supported by a robust safety culture, significant vulnerabilities persist in procedural infection prevention. The disparity between reactive and proactive hand hygiene underscores the need for targeted interventions, particularly through enhanced clinical auditing before aseptic procedures. Further investigation into the behavioural determinants underlying these compliance gaps is strongly recommended.

Abstract

Background: Tuberculosis (TB) is a major global public health problem requiring long-term adherence to anti-tuberculosis drug therapy to achieve treatment success and prevent drug resistance. Psychological factors, particularly anxiety, may negatively influence medication adherence and compromise TB treatment outcomes. This study aimed to determine the association between anxiety levels and adherence to anti-tuberculosis treatment among tuberculosis patients undergoing therapy at health care facilities. Methods: This quantitative analytical study employed a cross-sectional design involving 47 pulmonary TB patients undergoing treatment at health care facilities. Anxiety was measured using the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HARS), while medication adherence was assessed using a structured adherence questionnaire adapted from standard TB adherence indicators. Instrument validity was assessed through expert review, and reliability testing yielded a Cronbach’s alpha > 0.70. Data were analyzed using univariate analysis and the Chi-square test, with significance set at p < 0.05. Results: Most respondents demonstrated high adherence (61.7%), while 38.3% showed moderate adherence. The majority of patients were not anxious (66.0%), while 34.0% experienced mild anxiety. A statistically significant association was found between anxiety and medication adherence (p = 0.006), where patients with anxiety were more likely to have lower adherence (OR > 1). Conclusion: Anxiety is significantly associated with medication adherence among TB patients. Integrating mental health screening, patient education, and family support into TB programs is essential to improve adherence and treatment outcomes.

Abstract

Acute Respiratory Infection (ARI) is one of the most common diseases in toddlers and is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. One of the factors that contributes to the high incidence of ISPA in toddlers is exposure to cigarette smoke from parents or family members who smoke in the house. Based on the report of the South Sulawesi Police Primary Clinic, cases of ISPA in toddlers have continued to increase in the last three years, so research is needed on factors related to this incident. Objective: To determine the relationship between parental smoking behaviour and the incidence rate of ISPA in toddlers at the South Sulawesi Police Primary Clinic in 2025. Methods: This study is an observational analytical research with a cross-sectional design. The sample amounted to 46 respondents who were selected using the simple random sampling technique. Data collection was conducted using questionnaires, and data analysis was carried out using univariate and bivariate methods using the Chi-Square test with a significance level of 0.05. Results: The results showed that out of 46 toddlers, as many as 41 toddlers (89.1%) experienced ISPA. Parental smoking behaviour was found in 29 people (63.0%). The results of the Chi-Square test showed a value of p = 0.035, which means that there is a significant relationship between parental smoking behaviour and the incidence of ISPA in toddlers. Conclusion: The results of this study confirm the importance of efforts to prevent exposure to secondhand smoke in toddlers through increasing parental awareness about the impact of smoking behaviour on children's health. These findings can be the basis for health workers to strengthen health education, smoking cessation counselling, and the implementation of smoke-free home policies to reduce the incidence of ISPA in children under five. In addition, the results of this study are expected to be considered in the planning of promotive and preventive programs in health service facilities, especially in the Southeast Sulawesi region.
