Abstract

This study investigates the role of Green Supply Chain Management (GSCM) in enhancing firm competitiveness within emerging markets, where environmental sustainability and economic growth intersect amid infrastructural and regulatory challenges. A quantitative cross-sectional survey was conducted among 300 manufacturing firms across diverse sectors in emerging markets. Data were analyzed using regression and machine learning techniques to assess the relationship between GSCM practices and competitive advantage, moderated by organizational capabilities and market characteristics. The results reveal a positive, albeit complex, relationship between GSCM practices and firm competitiveness. While linear correlations appear weak, Random Forest analysis identifies GSCM practices and organizational capabilities as the most significant predictors of competitive advantage. Sectoral differences further highlight the contextual nature of GSCM effectiveness, with industries such as pharmaceuticals and food & beverage showing relatively higher performance outcomes. The findings underscore the strategic value of integrating sustainability into supply chain operations. Firms in emerging markets can leverage GSCM not only to comply with environmental regulations but also to enhance brand reputation, operational efficiency, and market responsiveness. This study contributes to the limited empirical literature on GSCM in emerging markets by offering a nuanced understanding of how green practices influence competitiveness. It highlights the importance of contextual factors and provides actionable insights for practitioners aiming to align sustainability with strategic business goals.

Abstract

This study investigates the impact of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) disclosures on firm value within ASEAN markets, addressing a critical gap in understanding how non-financial reporting influences corporate performance in emerging economies. Employing a quantitative cross-sectional design, the research analyzes ESG disclosures from publicly listed firms across major ASEAN economies. Regression analysis and endogeneity controls are applied to assess correlations between ESG scores and firm value indicators such as market capitalization and return on assets (ROA). Preliminary results reveal a positive association between ESG disclosure quality and firm performance, particularly in sectors with stringent regulatory oversight. Governance factors, including board diversity and ethical management, significantly enhance firm value. However, inconsistencies in disclosure practices across industries and countries underscore the need for standardized ESG frameworks. The study's cross-sectional nature limits long-term causal inference. Future research should adopt longitudinal methods and include private firms to broaden applicability. Sectoral and cultural nuances also warrant deeper exploration to refine ESG strategies in ASEAN. The findings offer actionable insights for policymakers, investors, and corporate leaders, advocating for improved transparency and standardized ESG reporting to foster sustainable growth and investor confidence in ASEAN markets. By contextualizing ESG disclosures within ASEAN’s socio-economic and cultural landscape, this study contributes a localized perspective to the global ESG discourse, highlighting the strategic importance of sustainability reporting in enhancing firm value.

Abstract

This study investigates the impact of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) dimensions—economic, legal, environmental, ethical, and philanthropic—on employee motivation, engagement, and organizational performance within Indian non-profit organizations. Grounded in Corporate Social Responsibility Theory and Self-Determination Theory (SDT), the research explores how CSR initiatives fulfill employees’ psychological needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness, thereby enhancing intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. Utilizing Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM), the study confirms that intrinsic motivation significantly mediates the relationship between CSR and employee engagement, with extrinsic motivation having a weaker but still notable effect. Furthermore, employee engagement strongly influences organizational performance, reinforcing the role of internally driven motivation. The findings suggest that aligning CSR efforts with psychological needs can foster a motivated, engaged workforce, ultimately driving sustainable organizational outcomes. This research contributes both theoretically and practically by offering a strategic framework for leveraging CSR to enhance human resource effectiveness in the non-profit sector.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the economic viability and strategic implications of renewable energy adoption among small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Indonesia. It addresses the critical gap in tailored cost-benefit analyses for SMEs transitioning to sustainable energy solutions. A mixed-methods approach integrates quantitative financial metrics such as net present value (NPV) and internal rate of return (IRR) with qualitative insights from SME stakeholders. Surveys and interviews were conducted to assess operational savings, investment challenges, and policy impacts. Case studies further illustrate successful adoption models. The results indicate that renewable energy adoption yields substantial operational savings and favorable payback periods, with IRRs averaging above 15%. Social and reputational benefits also drive adoption. However, SMEs face persistent barriers including limited financing, regulatory complexity, and inadequate access to government incentives. The study’s scope is limited to Indonesian SMEs and may not fully generalize across regions or sectors. Future research should expand to include longitudinal data and comparative analyses across ASEAN economies. Policymakers and industry stakeholders are encouraged to develop targeted support mechanisms, including simplified subsidy access and collaborative business models, to facilitate SME engagement in renewable energy transitions. This research offers a comprehensive framework for assessing renewable energy adoption in SMEs, combining financial, social, and policy dimensions. It contributes novel insights into the intersection of sustainability and economic resilience in emerging markets.

Abstract

This study investigates the intersection of carbon pricing policies and business adaptation strategies within Indonesia’s energy sector. It aims to understand how firms respond to regulatory shifts and the implications for sustainable development. The research employs a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative interviews and focus groups with quantitative surveys and economic performance indicators. This methodology enables a comprehensive analysis of corporate responses to carbon pricing and the effectiveness of policy implementation. The findings reveal that while carbon pricing incentivizes sustainable practices and technological innovation, its impact varies significantly across firms. Larger companies tend to adapt more effectively, whereas smaller enterprises face financial and operational challenges. The study underscores the importance of complementary policies, public engagement, and equity considerations in ensuring successful transitions to low-carbon operations. This research contributes to the limited empirical literature on carbon pricing in Southeast Asia, offering insights into Indonesia’s unique policy landscape. It highlights the need for tailored strategies that align economic, environmental, and social dimensions, thereby enhancing the resilience of the energy sector under climate policy frameworks.

Abstract

The construction sector contributes nearly 39% of global carbon emissions, making it a critical focus area for sustainable transformation. This study explores how integrating Circular Economy (CE) principles into civil engineering can promote environmental and economic sustainability. Emphasis is placed on the utilisation of industrial byproducts—specifically steel slag and fly ash—as partial replacements for cement and natural aggregates in concrete. Laboratory experiments assessed the mechanical and durability performance of these mixes, while Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and cost–benefit analyses quantified their environmental and economic impacts. Results indicate that CE-based concrete formulations can reduce embodied carbon by up to 30% and material costs by 10–15%, without compromising strength or durability. Furthermore, a Circular Business Model Framework was developed to guide construction firms in implementing CE strategies that balance profitability with sustainability goals. This research demonstrates that circular material use not only enhances structural performance but also establishes sustainable infrastructure as a viable strategic business model for the future built environment.

Abstract

The concrete industry remains a major contributor to global CO₂ emissions, primarily due to the production of Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC). This study examines the financial and environmental viability of hybrid concrete incorporating steel slag (SS) and rice husk ash (RHA) as sustainable supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs). A combined techno-economic and life cycle assessment (LCA) framework was developed to evaluate mechanical performance, durability, embodied carbon reduction, and cost efficiency. The optimal mix containing 15% SS and 10% RHA not only achieved a 6.7% higher 28-day compressive strength compared to the OPC control but also demonstrated a 42.5% reduction in CO₂ emissions and a 12.8% decrease in production costs. The results highlight how valorizing industrial and agricultural by-products in concrete can enhance investment returns, reduce carbon liabilities, and support the transition toward circular and low-carbon construction financing. This study provides insights for policymakers, investors, and construction firms in integrating sustainable materials into green finance frameworks.

Abstract

The cement sector accounts for approximately 7–8% of global anthropogenic CO₂ emissions, posing both environmental and financial challenges to achieving carbon-neutral construction. This study evaluates the techno-economic and environmental feasibility of low-carbon concrete incorporating rice husk ash (RHA) and steel industry by-products—ground-granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBFS) and steel slag (SS)—as partial substitutes for ordinary Portland cement (OPC). Experimental mixes with 10–30% binder substitution were tested for compressive strength, durability, and microstructural performance, while a cradle-to-gate life-cycle assessment (LCA) quantified the environmental and cost impacts in accordance with ISO 14040/44 standards. The optimal blend (10% RHA + 15% GGBFS + 5% SS) achieved ≈46 MPa 28-day compressive strength—~8% higher than OPC—and exhibited enhanced chloride resistance. LCA results revealed ~30% lower global-warming potential (GWP), ~20% lower acidification potential (AP), and an estimated ~15% reduction in production cost per cubic meter of concrete. These improvements strengthen the financial case for low-carbon materials by reducing carbon liabilities, improving resource efficiency, and aligning with sustainable investment frameworks under the UN SDG 12 and EU Taxonomy for sustainable activities. The findings provide evidence-based insights for policymakers, investors, and construction firms seeking to integrate material innovation into green finance and circular economy strategies.

Abstract

The construction industry is one of the largest generators of waste and consumers of natural resources worldwide. This study presents a conceptual analysis of the recycling process within civil engineering sites, emphasizing its role in sustainable construction and circular economy practices. Using a qualitative and descriptive approach, the research synthesizes findings from global studies, reports, and industry data to develop a framework outlining five key stages of the recycling process—waste generation, segregation, processing, quality control, and reuse. The results show that effective recycling can reduce construction waste by up to 90%, lower material costs by 5–10%, and cut carbon emissions by approximately 20%. The study further identifies challenges such as limited policy support, lack of standardization, and technological gaps that hinder wide-scale adoption, particularly in developing countries. The proposed conceptual framework highlights that recycling is not only a technical solution but also a management and policy process requiring coordination among engineers, contractors, and regulators. Overall, the study concludes that integrating systematic recycling into project planning and execution can transform civil engineering into a resource-efficient, low-carbon industry, aligning with global sustainability objectives such as the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Abstract

The construction sector plays a vital role in national economic development yet remains one of the highest contributors to resource depletion and carbon emissions. As urbanization accelerates, construction and demolition (C&D) waste presents significant financial, managerial, and environmental challenges. This study provides a comprehensive survey on the economic feasibility, sustainability accounting, strategic management, and Islamic finance perspectives of integrating recycled materials in civil engineering, particularly recycled concrete aggregates (RCA), waste plastics, recycled rubber, glass, and industrial by-products such as fly ash and GGBS. Evidence shows that the adoption of recycled materials contributes to cost efficiency, enhances resource productivity, and supports sustainability reporting through reduced embodied carbon and waste externalities. Management frameworks highlight the role of circular economy models and supply chain integration in improving operational performance. From an Islamic finance viewpoint, recycling practices align with Maqasid Al-Shariah, emphasizing environmental stewardship, avoidance of waste (israf), and promotion of socially responsible investments (SRI). Recent life-cycle assessments by Das, Rahman, and Hossain (2025) demonstrate that incorporating waste-derived materials not only minimizes carbon emissions but also enhances long-term economic value creation. Overall, this study shows that recycled-material innovations in civil engineering strengthen environmental governance, reduce lifecycle costs, and support global sustainability goals, making them highly relevant for policymakers, construction firms, and Islamic financial institutions.
