Abstract

This study investigates types and functions of code-switching in two novels. Theanalysis is framed within Poplack‟s types of code-switching theory (1980) and Koziol‟s functions of code-switching theory (2000 as cited in Fauzia, 2008 and Hendriyani, 2012). The documents (novels) were analyzed through several stages, i.e. identifying the code-switching in the characters‟ conversations; classifying the code-switching into their types and functions; quantifying the frequency of each type and function; and interpreting and discussing the data obtained. The results of data analysis show that there are three types and 13 functions of code-switching in the characters‟ conversations in the two novels. Keywords: Lupus, Code-switching, Types and Functions of Code-switching.

Abstract

The present research entitled Coming of Age: An Analysis of a Young Adult Character Development in Ellen Hopkins’ “Crank” is a textual analysis of Ellen Hopkins’ young adult fiction focusing on the issue of coming of age in the novel. The discussion focuses on the main female character in the story to reveal the ways coming of age issue is addressed in the novel. Therefore, the discussion is framed within the theories of the characteristic and development of young adult (Bucher and Hinton, 2010), coming of age (e.g. Millard, 2007 and Fox, 2010) and identity (Barker, 2002). The research utilizes a qualitative method particularly textual analysis. The result of the present research shows that coming of age describes a progress shift which is experienced by the main character, Georgia, from a teenage girl who is simple-minded to a mature adult with higher-level of thinking. In other words, coming of age issue shows the process of adolescents from immaturity to maturity. Keywords: Coming of Age, Young Adult, Character Development, Identity

Abstract

This study aims to investigate how high school students organize their ideas in their Exposition texts, and to what extent their Exposition texts are consistent with argumentative language features in terms of Thematic Progression, based on the framework of Systemic Functional Linguistics (e.g. Danes, 1974; Eggins, 2004). The data were nine high school students’ Exposition texts from low, middle, and high level of achievement. The result shows that the students organize their ideas in three ways of Thematic Progression, including the Zig-zag Pattern or Simple Linear Theme Progression (SLP), the Re-iteration Pattern or Constant Theme Progression (CTP), and the Multiple Theme Pattern or Derived Theme Progression (DTP). In terms of Thematic Progression consistency, some texts from middle and high achievers are consistent with the argumentative language features, since they employed SLP than CTP and used DTP. Some students still need guidance to create good pieces of writing. Keywords: Thematic Progression, Exposition text, Senior High School

Abstract

This research paper is aimed to uncover the ways in which the western author, Alan Drew, represents the East culture in the novel Gardens of Water (2003). The research employs qualitative descriptive study with the content analysis approach. The analysis of the novel is done within the theoretical framework of Orientalism proposed by Edward Said (1978). The results of the analysis show that the representation of non-western people and cultures confirms orientalist point of view that puts the East and the West in a binary opposition and represents the East as inferior to the West. The study also proves that the author uses typical stereotyping in representing the East in the novel such as untrustworthy, rude, barbaric and traditional and also exposes the issue of patriarchy which is usually pinned into the East Culture. This representation of the East leads to the justification of the West imperialism and colonization toward the East. Keywords : Orientalism, orientalist, binary opposition, representation of the East, West Imperialism

The present study entitled Shrinking Violet: Media Role in Identity Construction in Stephen Chbosky’s The Perks of Being a Wallflower focuses on the issue of identity construction and media role on the main character of the story. The study investigates the main character’s, Charlie, identity construction in the novel and the contribution of media role, particularly print-rich environment, in the construction of Charlie’s identity. The study is conducted within a descriptive text analysis by applying a qualitative method and is framed by theoretical frameworks such as identity theory (Hall, 2000) and young adult literature (Nilsen Donelson, 2001). The results demonstrate that Charlie’s identity is constructed through two different contexts: ‘home and family’ context and ‘school and friends’ context. The study also finds that there are roles of print-rich environment play to the construction of Charlie’s identity: as a tool of literacy and critical thinking improvement as well as a bibliotherapy. Keywords: Identity Construction, Young Adult, Media, Print-rich environment, Bibliotherapy.

Abstract

This research paper entitled Language Attitudes towards Written ‘Alay’ Variety in Facebook Interaction aims to reveal the use of the alay variety in Facebook media and the attitudes developed by users and ex-users of the variety. The study employs a descriptive method to describe and interpret the data. The study reveals that the realization of written alay variety in Facebook covers two broad categories, namely spelling and writing that involves a mix of capitals and punctuations. The spelling modifications in written alay variety were found to be in four different cases, spelling shift, spelling addition, spelling deletion, contraction, and irregular spelling modification. Related to language attitudes toward the written alay variety, users and ex-users develop different attitudes towards the use of alay variety. Users tend to have more neutral attitudes with the use of alay variety, they develop more positive attitudes towards the variety. In contrast, most ex-users react negatively towards the use of alay variety as they consider the variety to have a low prestige or status and is not a proper variety to use. Keywords: alay, alay variety, spelling, modification, language attitudes
