Passage is a journal published by English Language and Literature Study Program, Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia. Initially published for students’ articles based on their final research paper, Passage now is also accepting articles from researchers outside the study program. The journal focuses on research in language and literary studies written in English. Passage addresses issues on, but not limited to, roles of language and literature, genre, gender, discourse, ethnicity, and media within the frameworks of linguistics and literary theories. It also welcomes more specific research on Indonesian and Southeast Asian contexts to introduce a wider scholarship in the region for a more global readership. This journal is published twice a year in the months of April and November.

Abstract

This study entitled The Representation of Women in Instant Seasoning Advertisements. This study aims to investigate how women are represented in instant seasoning advertisements and reveal ideologies behind the representation. This study investigates the representation of women in five instant seasoning advertisements; ABC ‘Sambal Masak’ advertisement “Kayak Masakan Mami”, Royco ‘All in One’ advertisement “Ini Resepku”, Indofood ‘Bumbu Racik Tempe’ advertisement “Resep Kering Tempe”, Masako ‘Bumbu Kaldu Penyedap’ advertisement “Cuma Ubi”, and ‘Bango ‘Bumbu Ayam Goreng Bacem’ advertisement “Petani Ketumbar”. The advertisements were downloaded randomly from www.youtube.com. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method. Women in instant seasoning advertisements were investigated through the visual elements of the advertisements as follows; actresses (physical appearance, fashion, facial expression and emotion), setting and properties, frame size, camera angle, and color saturation. This study uses order of signification’s theory by Barthes (1957), reading images’ theory by Kress and Leuween (2006), and some theories of visual elements in television advertisement. The results show that women are mostly represented as brave, feminine, motherly, cheerful, independent, calm, optimistic, and modern women. The study also concludes that there are three ideologies in instant seasoning advertisements: femininity, modernism, and recreation.Keywords: Semiotics, Representation, Women, Advertisements

Abstract

This present research aims to analyze the plot structures in Jacqueline Wilson’s novel entitled The Suitcase Kid (1992) by using Narratology. This qualitative research focuses on the plot of the story in order to analyze how the plot of the story is structured in the novel and to construct the meaning that can be made from the structure of the plot. The findings of this research reveal that the plot of the story is structured like a tree. The plot is developed by a major plot which gives ways for five interrelated plots and forms a story with branching plots. The finding indicates that there are two potential meaning which originated by the structure of the plot. Firstly, the story with branching plots elevates the level of suspense to the reader. Secondly, the set of events in the novel indicates that The Suitcase Kid can be considered as a Bildungsroman novel.

Abstract

This research aims to analyse translation shifts of nominal and verbal groups found in the Indonesian subtitle of The Revenant film, and observe how translation shifts affect the meanings. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method. The data are taken from the transcription and subtitle of The Revenant film. This study follows Halliday and Matthiessen’s (2004) concept of nominal group and verbal group (transitivity) and Catford’s (1965) theory of translation shifts which includes level shift, structure shift, unit shift, class shift, and intra-system shift. The analysis shows that the process of translating involves single and double translation shifts. In nominal groups, the shifts were dominated by unit + intra-system shifts (40.87%). While in verbal groups, the shifts were dominated by intra-system shift (71.70%). Both shifts slightly affect the meanings of the translated text. This study suggests that linguistic analysis could provide research-based samples of how the experts conducted translation. Abstract

This study analyzes a young adult protagonist character Clay Jensen in Thirteen Reasons Why novel by Asher (2007). The present research investigates the main character’s psychosocial development. The novel tells a journey of Clay Jensen who struggles to listen to a series of tapes that reveal reasons why his crush, Hannah Baker, committed suicide in Hannah’s voice. The way Clay reflects his emotions and responses to the tapes interest the researcher to analyze his psychosocial development, specifically the psychological and social characteristics. The purposes of this study are to enlist Clay Jensen’s psychosocial issues and to discover how he copes with these issues as part of psychosocial development. This textual analysis applied Bucher and Hinton’s (2010) developmental characteristics of young adults; the analysis explored Clay Jensen’s narrative events that embody the ideas of psychosocial issues and how he deals with the psychosocial issues. It is concluded that Clay Jensen develops psychosocially because he experiences some psychosocial issues such as anxiety and low self-esteem, but he is able to cope with these issues. Clay Jensen is also a round character who develops himself from being selfish to be a more sympathetic person.

Abstract

This study investigated some strategies applied by the translator in translating Indonesian cultural terms found in the novel Footsteps. The data were taken from the original version of the novel entitled Jejak Langkah and its English version entitled Footsteps. By using qualitative method, this study classified and analyzed the data based on Newmark’s (1988) cultural categories and Venuti’s (1995) domestication and foreignization strategies in translation. The result showed that domestication and foreignization strategies were applied by the translator to translate Indonesian cultural terms with the percentage of 26.92% (domesticated) and 73.08% (foreignized). The most frequently used strategy by the translator in translating the cultural terms make the translation result to be less fluent and less transparent. However, it could make the target language readers feel closer to the nuance of the original story of the novel Footsteps and recognize linguistic and cultural differences of other languages, in this case Indonesian.Keywords: Domestication, Foreignization, Strategi Penerjemahan, Istilah Budaya.

Abstract

The present study entitled Woman Representation in Tangled Film aims at examining and making meaning of the representation of woman in Tangled film. Utilizing a qualitative research, particularly a descriptive method, the present study adopts Kellie Heintz and Mark Stracey’s (2006) film studies theory and women representation theory by Brittany N Maggiore (2003). There are a lot of studies about women representation but only a few which discusses women representation using film studies. Therefore, this present study highlights women representation from different perspective because this study uses a film as the subject of the research to see woman representation by using the language of film, such as camera shot, camera angle and mise en scene. From the analysis, there are three aspects which shows woman representation in Tangled film, such as Rapunzel’s physical appearance, personal traits, and her relation to other characters. Through the language of film, the woman representation in Tangled film is constructed in more detail because the element used by the filmmaker made the figure more highlighted. Meanwhile, the woman representation theory also strengthens the depiction of woman representation in Tangled film. Abstract

This paper entitled “Autotext Emoticon as Message Carrier in Blackberry” is aimed to investigate the meaning and the function of the Eastern emoticons used in Blackberry Messenger and to discover the differences between male and female in using emoticons. The study is qualitative which utilizes Eco’s (1994) Hermetic drift theory. The main data are 10 emoticons which were used in ten different conversations in Blackberry messenger. There are 15 conversations which consist of five conversations between male and female, five conversations between female and female, and five conversations between male and male. The study revealed that the emoticons function to i) represent feelings, 2) strengthen messages, and 3) joke around. It also revealed that females become more expressive than males in using emoticons in a conversation between female and female. To some extent, males are the opposite, males become less expressive in using emoticons between male and male. However, males are like females in expressing their feelings so that they appear as expressive as females in the conversation between female and male.Keywords: Semiotic, Eastern Emoticons, Autotext Emoticons, Gender contribution, Blackberry

Abstract

This research concentrates on the interplay of power between the main character and other characters and the formation of the main character’s identity as a result of her social interaction with the members of society. To complete the data analysis, five basic tenets of Foucault’s theory of power (2006), Fundamental Nature of Power by Rummel (1976), and Theory of Identity Formation by Marcia (2005) are employed. This research highlights three major points as the finding of the data analysis which focuses on the main character protagonist, Srintil. First, the interplay of power between Srintil and other characters is considered as a strategy of interest and not being possessed by particular parties. Srintil’s active participation in exercising and resisting the power in her social interaction depicts that she is responsive and susceptible character. The previous finding leads to another conclusion that Srintil’s identity is dynamic and highly influenced and shaped from external factors within her social domain. Third, Srintil fails to identify herself as a result of lacking an understanding and anticipation of her expectation and society demands. According to the analysis, it can be deduced that young adult character’s identity is fluctuative and exceedingly affected by power relation in social interaction. Keywords: power, power relation, identity, identity formation, young adult literature

Abstract

Translation has been widely recognized as a way to connect cultures among the world through literary works. However, translating literary works is not an easy task, especially poetry. This research entitled “McGlynn versus Aveling: A Comparison of Translation Strategies Used in Sapardi Djoko Damono’s Poems” aims to analyse strategies of translating poetry proposed by Andre Lefevere, and how they can impact the translation results of five poems by two different translators: John McGlynn and Harry Aveling. The poems were collected from three books: Black Magic Rain, Contemporary Indonesian Poetry, and Before Dawn. A descriptive analysis method was employed in this study alongside a little approach of a case study. The findings showed that the most frequent strategy used by both translators was Literal Translation. Strategies used by both translators also affect the lexical thematic, visual, and rhythmic acoustic dimension of the poems indirectly.Keywords: Translation, Poetry, Strategies

Abstract

Young adult literature provides varieties of themes and concepts of life for teenager to explore. After Dark by Haruki Murakami (2007) focuses on abstract concepts of loneliness. This study attempts to analyze how are the forms of loneliness depicted in the novel through the main character, Mari Asai, by scrutinizing the literary tool of focalization (Bal, 1985). Mijuskovic’s theory (2014) that distinguishes four forms of loneliness and three ways to overcome loneliness are also used in this study. Mari Asai’s loneliness is found to be a complex four forms of loneliness that she experiences throughout her life: aloneness, loneliness, isolation, and alienation. The forms are based on some sources and ways to overcome loneliness that she reveals and finds throughout the story. Mari’s loneliness is overcome when she is willing to have conversations with others, build relationships, and seek solitude within herself. From the focalization used in the novel, the loneliness is mostly shown through Character-Bound Focalization on the second level (CF2). CF2 is found to be the most useful type of focalization that helps to depict what the main character think and feel because of its detailed use. Mari Asai’s experience of loneliness shows how loneliness is a common and important thing for young people to progress into adulthood. Through the whole progress of the main character coping with her loneliness, the novel provides guidance for young adult to go through loneliness as a stage that may happen in life.
