Abstract

This paper entitled “Autotext Emoticon as Message Carrier in Blackberry” is aimed to investigate the meaning and the function of the Eastern emoticons used in Blackberry Messenger and to discover the differences between male and female in using emoticons. The study is qualitative which utilizes Eco’s (1994) Hermetic drift theory. The main data are 10 emoticons which were used in ten different conversations in Blackberry messenger. There are 15 conversations which consist of five conversations between male and female, five conversations between female and female, and five conversations between male and male. The study revealed that the emoticons function to i) represent feelings, 2) strengthen messages, and 3) joke around. It also revealed that females become more expressive than males in using emoticons in a conversation between female and female. To some extent, males are the opposite, males become less expressive in using emoticons between male and male. However, males are like females in expressing their feelings so that they appear as expressive as females in the conversation between female and male. Keywords: Semiotic, Eastern Emoticons, Autotext Emoticons, Gender contribution, Blackberry

Abstract

Besides entertaining, children’s literature is expected to stimulate children’s understanding about particular values in real life and contributes to their development and needs. Due to this importance, many stories for children are delivered through realistic fiction. This paper thus aimed at investigating a child character’s development in realistic fiction and identifying the contributions of focalization to the main character’s development by using Bal’s narratology (2009) as the main framework. To analyze data in the form of written texts, qualitative method with descriptive analysis was applied. The results showed that the main character developed through four key narrative events and different focalization. Both were examined to explicate the dynamic changes in his personalities and attitudes. The development was also contributed by the six characters’ focalization which mostly revealed the shifts of direct and indirect speech, and the cognitive and perceptual views. This means that R.J. Palacio’s Wonder is successful in portraying a realistic fiction picture of a deformed child. In consequence, it shows that multiple focalization opens horizon to different perspectives which is important in children’s literature (Nikolajeva, 2002).Keywords: Children’s Literature, Character Development, NarratologyNews tends to be manipulated by some people to control over other people because news shapes publics opinions. Abstract

This paper investigates the ways the Persians are represented in the movie ‘300’. Furthermore, the study also analyzes the relationship between the movie and the current socio-political issues between the United States and Iran. This study uses Edward Said’s (1978) Orientalism as the main theoretical framework and Davis, Mules and Thwaites’ (1994) character and characterization as the supporting theoretical framework. In addition, Brian’s (2005) Film and Politicsin Americais used to to analyze the relationship between the movie ‘300’ and the socio-political issues between the U.S. and Iran. The study finds that Persians are characterized as being inferior, evil, savage, bestial, and corrupt, amplifying their positions as the villains in the movie. This negative portrayals, from a perspective of the Orientalist, areforms of pejorative stereotypes. With regard to the relationship between the movie and the current socio-political issue between the U.S. and Iran, it seems apparent that the movie is used asapropaganda by the U.S. government. This can be clearly seen from the negative representation of Persians as villains, the movie producer, and the time of the movie release. All the findings above indicate that a film can be used as a tool for a propaganda. Keywords: Orientalism, Orient, Occident, Character and Characterization, Representation, Persians

Abstract

The study aims to measure arguments’ strength of the 2012 the United States’ presidential candidates, Barack Obama and Mitt Romney, in their latest presidential debate. The researcher selected 41 arguments from the debate transcription, based on the completeness requirement of the primary elements of Toulmin’s Argumentation Model (1958), such as claim, ground and warrants. The data are analyzed through the three stages of analysis, namely cogency analysis, soundness analysis, and strength level analysis. Based on the data analysis, three qualifications are found: strong argument, weak argument and very weak argument. The analysis shows that Barrack Obama is the winner of the latest U.S presidential debate. Obama won the debate because his strong arguments’ frequency is higher than Romney’s strong argument in the debate. Furthermore, most of Obama’s arguments, either strong or weak, are constructed in the form of deductive arguments. As the nature of deductive argument, which guarantees the cogency and the validity of its conclusion, Obama’s arguments in the latest presidential debate 2012 are mostly cogent and valid. Keywords: Argument Strength, Cogency Analysis, Soundness Analysis, Strength Level Analysis

Abstract

This research investigates the translation shifts of English noun phrases in the short story entitled “The Black Cat” (1843) by Edgar Allan Poe into Indonesian as “Kucing Hitam” (2010) which was translated by Maggie Tiojakien. It was focused on the types of translation shifts and the change of meaning in the translation shifts. This research was mostly qualitative supported by descriptive quantification. The data were obtained from an online source at http://pinkmonkey.com/dl/library1/cat_.pdf and from anthology entitled Kisah-kisah Tengah Malam which was published by PT Gramedia Pustaka Utama in 2010. The data were analyzed by applying translation shift theory proposed by Catford (1965) and supported by Fabb’s (2005) Tree Diagram as a tool. The result showed that the most frequent shift that was used by translator was structure shift (59%). It was because the differences of grammatical structure between English and Indonesian. Besides, the change of meaning mostly took place in implicitation (34,4%). It means that the translator tends to use the words in the target language text with words having more general meaning than the source language text in order to fit the context of the story. Keywords: Translation Shift, Noun Phrases, Change Of Meaning

Abstract

This study investigated the representation of motivational values in pictures and the myths underlying the representations. The data are ten pictures containing the issue of motivation retrieved from Pinterest website. This is a qualitative research framed in Barthes’ orders of signification theory (1972). The theory was used to discover the representation of motivational values while the theory of motives by Murray (2009) became the foundation in revealing the myths from the representations. The result shows that there are three classifications of the representation of motivational values, namely the motivational values in global context, the motivational values in the context of health, and the motivational values in the context of sport. Moreover, of the three motivational values, there are five values that stand out: hard work, independence, total action, focus, and benefit of having opportunities. With regard to the myth, there are two motives, namely the motive of achievement and the motive of counteraction. In addition, there are three elaborations in the motive of achievement: to overcome obstacles, to accomplish something difficult, and to master physical things. Furthermore, there are two elaborations in the motive of counteraction: to overcome weaknesses and to repress fear. This study suggests that besides motivational speech of particular people, any texts including pictures can serve as source for motivation. Keywords: Representation, Motives, Motivational values, Myths, Pinterest
