Abstract

The present study seeks to investigate the representations of Rasyid Rajasa regarding his highway accident in tvOne and RCTI news reports and the significance of the representations. This study employs a qualitative design with some measures of descriptive statistics and a perspective of CDA proposed by Fairclough (1995). The data include the selected four news reports of Rasyid Rajasa’s trial taken from youtube.com. The analysis uses theories of Transitivity and Thematization of Halliday (1994) in revealing the representations which signify underlying ideologies. The study reveals that Rasyid Rajasa is represented as guilty, a victim and as favored. From those representations, four ideologies are derived, namely democracy, capitalism, “fairness” in expressions and partiality in expressions. Keywords: Critical Discourse Analysis, Transitivity, Thematization, Social Actor, Representation.

Abstract

This present research examines the representation of the United States in Syrian conflict as evidenced in the BBC International and the BBC Indonesia articles by using van Dijk’ssociocognition framework (2009a 2009b). This research employed qualitative method to describe the representation and its significance. Drawing on 10 online articles from the BBC International and the BBC Indonesia, it was found that the U.S. is represented as the Globo-cop who controls the plot in Syrian conflict. The representation is indicated by three indicators, namely: the U.S. is a firm and powerful country, the U.S. is intimate with the Opposition, and the U.S. is the Opposition group helper. In addition, through sociocognition and context analyses, it was revealed that the ideology of the BBC International and BBC Indonesia is shaped by the culture of their owners. However, the different level of representation of the U.S in the two news corporations is influenced by their target readers. Keywords: Critical Discourse Analysis, Sociocognition, Van Dijk, Representation, Translation Media, Syrian Conflict. Keywords: Critical Discourse Analysis, Sociocognition, Van Dijk, Representation, Translation Media, Syrian Conflict.

Abstract

This research probes the representation of social actors in two prominent Western mass media. The Egyptian and Syrian governments are the focuses of this research. The data of this research were taken from two Western mass media, namely BBC and CNN. This research is descriptive qualitative in nature. The data includes the online news articles published in official sites of BBC and CNN. The analysis examined how social actors are excluded and included in the texts. The findings showed that BBC and CNN mostly represent the Egyptian and Syrian governments negatively. It was discovered from the excessive use of predicate with negative semantic load attached to the Egyptian and Syrian governments. Such excessive use of predicate implicates that BBC and CNN were likely to expose the bad sides of the Egyptian and Syrian governments to the world citizen. This practice appears to reflect how the two media view the two national governments. Keywords: Representation, Mass Media, Egyptian and Syrian Governments

Abstract

This research entitled Face Observance in Twitter Conversationsis aimed at investigating the politeness strategies used by the speakers in observing and non-observing their hearers’ face in Twitter conversations, the response given by the hearers, and the effects which may be resulted from (non) observance. This study employs a descriptive qualitative study. The data were taken from conversations made in Twitter. This study showed that the four types of politeness strategies proposed by Brown and Levinson (1987) namely, bald-on-record, positive politeness, negative politeness, and off-record are used by the speakers in observing and non-observing their hearers’ negative and positive face. The hearers’ response to the (non) observance done by the speakers by using different strategies may produce some effects to the conversation itself. The result shows that there are two kinds of effects resulted from (non) observance done by the speakers. The first effect is that the conversation goes well without any distraction while the second one is that the conversation is distracted or even stopped. It is suggested that positive politeness strategy seems to be the preferred choice taken by the participants in maintaining a conversation. Keywords: Face, Observance,Politeness, Face Threatening Acts, Politeness StrategiesKeywords: Face, Observance,Politeness, Face Threatening Acts, Politeness Strategies
