Abstract

In order to explore the issue of identity construction of an adolescent character in Haruki Murakami’s Kafka on the Shore, this research uses Nikolajeva’s (2003) theory on implicit characterization and Trites’s (2000) theory on identity construction in young adult literature. By employing a narrative approach in a qualitative method which focuses on the analysis of the main character, Kafka Tamura, and his quest of identity, the findings reveal three main points. First, through the implicit characterization depicted in his preferences, Kafka is portrayed as a teenager who distances himself from the society. Second, the most prominent issue in Kafka’s quest of identity is triggered by father-centered conflicts. Third, sex and death in this novel are used as conflicts resolution. From the analysis, it can be concluded that the identity constructed by Kafka in the end of the novel is a compromised identity who learns to accept the norms and values of the society he intends to leave.  Keywords: Adolescent, coming-of-age, identity construction, young adult literature

Abstract

This research aims to investigate the major participants in Bambang Widjojanto’s case, how they are represented, and the meanings can be constructed from the representation. The data were taken from five headline news relating to the topic in online newspaper, The Jakarta Post. A Critical Discourse Analysis, especially Van Dijk’s framework, Sociogognitive Approach (2009) focusing on microstructure level has been used to analyze the data. The analysis reveals that there are two major participants in Bambang Widjojanto’s case, Bambang Widjojanto and the Police. The Jakarta Post generally represents Bambang Widjojanto positively, while the Police is represented negatively. Bambang Widjojanto is mostly represented as recipient and the Police is mostly represented as producer, on the other hand. It can be assumed that The Jakarta Post intends to convey that Bambang Widjojanto is a positive recipient or a right/good ‘victim’, while the Police is a negative producer or a wrong/bad ‘actor’. It shows that there is a polarization in representing the participants. This polarization signifies that the Police misused their power over Bambang Widjojanto. Moreover, those representations of the major participants can affect the representation of the institution in which they work.Keywords: The Jakarta Post, representation, CDA, sosicocognitive, microstructure, Bambang Widjojanto

Abstract

This study looks specifically at the borrowing words phenomenon among teenagers in one junior high school in Bandung. The borrowing words phenomenon being inverstigated in this study included the types of borrowing words, phonological process, the most dominant part of speech in borrowing words and some possible factors for borrowing to occur. The data were taken from 18 teenagers from three different grades. The seventh grade consists of six teenagers (11-12 years old), eighth grade consists of six teenagers (12-13 years old) and ninth grade consists of six teenagers (13-14 years old). The data were analyzed in a descriptive qualitative method by using the theories from Hoffer (2005), Campbell (1998), Field (2002) and Thomas (1993). The findings showed that the most frequent type of borrowing in all grades is loanword. In terms of phonological processes, the most frequent sound change occurs in the borrowing is Monophthongisation. With regard to parts of speech, noun appears as the dominant part of speech in the borrowing words. Four possible factors that cause borrowing words in teenagers are due to the frequency in using borrowing words, the number of speakers around the respondents, the habitual of expressing the English words and the low competence of the speakers. In conclusion, it seems apparent that borrowing words in this context udergo many phonological adaptations.Keywords: borrowing words, loanword, sound change, factors of borrowing words

Abstract

This study explores the oppression and identity in Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 (henceforth, F451). It examines the portrayal of oppression in the F451 society and how these oppressions affect the main protagonist’s identity construction. To meet the purposes, the study was designed under cultural materialism approach and applies Young’s theory on oppression known as Five Faces of Oppression (1990) and Hall’s theory on identity as the theoretical framework of the study. The findings reveal that there are five forms of oppression evident in the novel: exploitation, marginalization, powerlessness, cultural imperialism, and violence. It also indicates that the main protagonist’s identity is constructed by the oppression that he observes and notices through his interaction with characters and things around him. As the result of these oppressions, Montag’s identity is transformed from ignorant to non-conformist. Seeing from the cultural materialism perspective, the fictional world of F451 is a metaphor of a more media-absorbed society of America 1950s. As such, this oppression should be resisted. In this case, Montag’s identity construction can be interpreted as the representation of the resistance. Thus, parallel to its context, F451 presages the threat of media dominance and at the same time offers a possible way to fight against it.Keywords: Oppression, Identity, Cultural Materialism, Fahrenheit 451

Abstract

The present study seeks to investigate the phenomenon of slips of the ear by English Education Department students. Data were taken from 10 students from different semester and have minimum 500 TOEFL score. Data were analyzed qualitatively supported by descriptive quantification and based on Bond’s (2005) slips of the ear theories. The findings show that the errors occur in lexical level and syntactical levels. The factors of the occurrences of slips of the ear can be because of the lack of lexical knowledge, the accent and dialect, the unfamiliarity with the words, or difficulties in segmenting utterances. The result of this study shows that the errors which occur most in all categories is in syntactical level, which is ill-formed utterances. Furthermore, this study supports the previous studies of slips of the ear proposed by Kusumarasdyati (2005) who states that when the listeners misperceive the utterances, they will add, omit, or substitute the utterances.Keywords: slips of the ear, music, lyrics, lexical, syntax

Abstract

This qualitative study aims to analyze the youth representation in five versions of SilverQueen television advertisements and reveal the ideologies reflected in such representation. The data are five versions of SilverQueen television advertisements which are broadcasted in Indonesia from 2002 until 2012. The theories used in this study are Barthes’ orders of signification (1957) and the theory of visual elements proposed by Dyer (1996). The findings of the study show that youth is represented in five versions of SilverQueen television advertisements (2002-2012) through similar ways. Youth is represented in SilverQueen television advertisements through three visual elements (actor, setting, and property): (1) the attractive young people as actors and actresses of the advertisements who are estimated to be about 18-25 years old. They wear casual clothes which represent informality and some accessories which make their appearances look more attractive; (2) the choices of setting which mostly take place outdoors represent the youth’s interest for spending their free time outdoors and enjoying nature; and (3) the choices of property reflect that young people love to relax, hang out with their friends, and have interest for exploration and visiting places. In terms of ideologies, this study found two ideologies behind such representation, namely freedom and hedonism. Keywords: youth, representation, television advertisement, ideology

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the use of suffix {–i} and {–kan} in Indonesian online newspapers by discovering the bases as well as grammatical meanings and functions that are shown by the use of each suffix. The researcher also attempts to analyze the differences between suffix {–i} and {–kan}. Two hundred thousand words of the articles from three Indonesian online newspapers, Kompas, Republika, Tempo, were taken for being analyzed. The data were analyzed by a corpus program AntConc. For the knowledge of suffixes, the researcher used Sneddon’s (2010) book as a guidance. The results showed that the noun bases often appear to be attached by suffix {-i} and {-kan}. It can be concluded that the use of suffix {-kan} are more common in the articles of formal documents, in this case Indonesian online newspapers, because many Indonesian bases that come from English, which mostly appear in the formal documents, can be only attached by suffix {-kan}. Keywords: AntConc, Grammatical Functions, Grammatical Meanings, Suffix {-i}, Suffix {-kan}

Abstract

This research attempts to discover how a young adult dystopian novel entitled Legend by Marie Lu portrays a totalitarian government controls its subject and the way young adult characters resists to it. This research employs Foucault’s discipline technique and categorization of resistance. The findings shows that the controlling strategies in the society within Legend reflect two of Foucault’s techniques: geneses organization, and distribution system. Additionally, the controlling strategy is supported by terror and knowledge concealment. For the young adult resistance aspect, the characters’ resistance acts are found to be directed towards subjection and domination. The resistance is manifested through actions which embody two major characteristics, aggressive or submissive. In addition, Legend also demonstrates the use of discourse as a device to revolt. Ultimately, Legend appears to inherit the didactic nature of young adult dystopian literature as it cast warning about absolutism of certain group, the danger of a certain policy in current society, and the importance of knowledge, individuality and freedom of choice.Keywords: control, resistance, discipline, dystopia, young adult literature
