Abstract

This present research aims to analyze the plot structures in Jacqueline Wilson’s novel entitled The Suitcase Kid (1992) by using Narratology. This qualitative research focuses on the plot of the story in order to analyze how the plot of the story is structured in the novel and to construct the meaning that can be made from the structure of the plot. The findings of this research reveal that the plot of the story is structured like a tree. The plot is developed by a major plot which gives ways for five interrelated plots and forms a story with branching plots. The finding indicates that there are two potential meaning which originated by the structure of the plot. Firstly, the story with branching plots elevates the level of suspense to the reader. Secondly, the set of events in the novel indicates that The Suitcase Kid can be considered as a Bildungsroman novel.

Abstract

This research concentrates on the interplay of power between the main character and other characters and the formation of the main character’s identity as a result of her social interaction with the members of society. To complete the data analysis, five basic tenets of Foucault’s theory of power (2006), Fundamental Nature of Power by Rummel (1976), and Theory of Identity Formation by Marcia (2005) are employed. This research highlights three major points as the finding of the data analysis which focuses on the main character protagonist, Srintil. First, the interplay of power between Srintil and other characters is considered as a strategy of interest and not being possessed by particular parties. Srintil’s active participation in exercising and resisting the power in her social interaction depicts that she is responsive and susceptible character. The previous finding leads to another conclusion that Srintil’s identity is dynamic and highly influenced and shaped from external factors within her social domain. Third, Srintil fails to identify herself as a result of lacking an understanding and anticipation of her expectation and society demands. According to the analysis, it can be deduced that young adult character’s identity is fluctuative and exceedingly affected by power relation in social interaction. Keywords: power, power relation, identity, identity formation, young adult literature

Abstract

This qualitative descriptive study attempts to evaluate the sentence types, the sentence logic, and the appropriateness of citations and references in the journal articles written by lecturers from the Faculty of Mathematics and Science and the Faculty of Engineering. The sentence analysis is based on the frameworks proposed by Alwi, Dardjowidjojo, Lapoliwa, and Moeliono (2003) and Oshima and Hogue (2007). Meanwhile, the analysis of citations and references is based on APA style (6th edition). The results of the sentence analysis show that complex sentences are the most frequent sentence type found in the journal articles. Moreover, the quality of sentence logic in the journal articles is good since most of sentences are written correctly and well structured. Citations and references analysis regarding the characteristics of reference sources show several important results: 1) books are the most frequent reference sources used in the journal articles, 2) the most common language used in the journal articles is Indonesian language, and 3) the sources published in 6 – 10 years are the most frequent source used in the journal articles. Regarding the appropriateness of citations and references, citations and references are mostly written inappropriately. In addition, mistakes related to the use of mechanics are the most common citation mistake and mistakes related to title are the most common reference mistake found in the journal articles. Overall, it can be concluded that the journal articles are good regarding the sentence logic but they need more improvement regarding citations and referencesKeywords: Sentence Types, Sentence Logic, Appropriateness, Citations, References

Abstract

This present research examined narrative features used to reframe Egypt military coup news. The data were in the form of two articles taken from Al-Arabiya as the source texts and two articles taken from Kompas as the target texts. This research employed qualitative approach and descriptive method as research design and textual analysis to collect the data. To analyse the data, this research used narrative theory proposed by Baker (2010a). According to the results, this research showed that narrative features used are selective appropriation, temporality, and relationality. Selective appropriation is the most frequently used in this study which means that the texts were purposively selected to represent the target text news agency. By using temporality, the texts underwent an adjustment of time with the time in the target texts. In addition, temporality also made the texts reveal a distance between the readers and the place where the incident happened. Furthermore, by applying relationality, the texts underwent an adjustment with the understanding which existed in the target texts. Based on the findings, this study concludes that Al-Arabiya tended to support Ikhwanul Muslmin and Kompas tended to support Egypt military. Keywords: Narrative, Narrative Features, Reframing, and News

Abstract

The research entitled Audiovisual Translation of English Idioms in Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Movie : An Analysis of English to Indonesian Subtitle aims at discovering types of idioms which are mostly used in the movie and analyzing the translation strategies dealing with the idioms in the movie. The data were analyzed by using a descriptive qualitative method with Fernando’s (1996) typology of idioms and Gottlieb’s (1992) strategies for the translation process of subtitling. The result of data analysis shows that pure idiom has the largest number of the total idiom found in the movie, that is 50 items (50%). The second finding shows that the most frequent strategies used by the translator is paraphrase which is used 41 times or reaches 41% of the total usage. Subsequently, strategies which less frequent in a row are transfer (40%), expansion (9%), condensation (4%), deletion (3%), and resignation (3%). By seeing the result it can be concluded that the Indonesian translator, in translating idioms in Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows movie, tends to be source-language oriented. Keywords: Translation Strategies, Idioms, Movie Subtitle, Audiovisual Translation

Abstract

The research aims to investigate and identify the skopos of the target texts, translation method and strategies used by BBC in translating Middle East news online articles. This research employed descriptive qualitative methodology with descriptive statistics method. The data were taken from BBC main web site for 20 original articles (English version) and BBC Indonesia for 20 translated articles (Indonesian version). The data were analyzed based on translation theories of translation methods proposed by Newmark (1988) and translation strategies, including selected microstrategies proposed by Schjoldager (2008, in Jensen, 2009); and strategies related to journalistic translation from Klaudy and Laviosa in Vybíralová (2012), Bani (2006), and Bielsa and Bassnett (2009). The result revealed that the skopos of the target texts is to make informative text in form of brief online news articles for Indonesian readers. The target texts also should have the characteristics of the journalistic translation which are to give less-effort readability (Bani, 2006) and immediate comprehension. The translation method which becomes the translator’s overall plan is Communicative Translation in 14 articles (70%) with 93 occurrences (50%). Communicative Translation makes the target texts comprehensive and acceptable to the readership (Newmark, 1988). It also establishes less-effort readability. The other methods are Faithful Translation in 6 articles (30%) with 72 occurrences (38%) and Free Translation with only 21 occurrences (11%). In translation strategies analysis, Explicitation has 28 occurrences (37%), Calque with 26 occurrences (34%), Change of sentence order with 10 occurrences (13%), Simplification with 9 occurrences (12%), Direct transfer with 2 occurrences (3%) and Inclusion of explanation with 1 occurrence (1%). Explicitation is used more often than calque in the translation process as one of the functional characteristics of informative text type which is to transmit referential contents (Reiss, 1976 in Munday, 2001). The other strategies, Cutting was used in 18 articles (90%) and there are 13 articles (65%) in which their titles were changed. 12 articles were changed from direct to indirect titles and one article from indirect to direct titles. Cutting supports the skopos by omitting additional information (subsections), while Indirect Titles make the target text titles brief and establish attraction to the target readers by presenting hint.

Abstract

The present study examines the representation of Mount Slamet disaster in online media in two news practitioners, namely Tempo and Time. This study mainly employs a descriptive qualitative method. The data include twelve articles taken from Tempo and one article from Time related to Mount Slamet’s volcanic activity. The analysis employs the framework developed by van Dijk (2009), i.e. the socio-cognitive approach (SCA), which includes macrostructure and microstructure analyses. Halliday’s transitivity (Halliday Matthiessen, 2014) is used in microstructure analysis to examine the representation of experiences presented in the articles. The macrostructure analysis discloses three findings. These include the issues discussed in relation to the Mount Slamet disaster, the writing strategy of quotation, and the use of sources. Both Tempo and Time have a similarity of quotation strategy despite having differences in terms of variation of topics and the sources used in the articles. In microstructure analysis, the study reveals that both Tempo and Time represented the volcanic disaster mostly in material and verbal processes. The similar strategy of representation employed by the two media seems to be affected by the nature of the genre and the experience being represented. However, there is a wide difference in the number of reports made by the two media. This appears to result from different levels of concern: Tempo, as a local media, expresses more concern by writing many more reports than Time, an international media. Keywords: Socio-cognitive Approach, Representation, Mount Slamet Disaster, Online Media
