Abstract

Gossip has been famously regarded as one form of communication. People interact with each other and end up in gossiping about other people. The issue of gossip is still considered as trivial thing and the word gossip itself is still labeled with negative value. This research entitled “An Analysis of Representation of Gossip in Lauren Weisberger‟s Everyone Worth Knowing” attempts to reveal the benefits of gossip which becomes the main issue of the novel. Using James O. Young’s representation theory and theory of gossip by Elaine Lui, this research provides another perspective of gossip by portraying the function and power of gossip, and also how gossip works in the society. The findings show that the issue of gossip is closely related to famous people like celebrity, and gossip has also been used as a commodity to reach certain purposes. Keywords: gossip, representation, celebrity

Abstract

This research paper aims to make meaning of normalcy in Ken Kesey’s novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. The meaning of normalcy is constructed from characters who are considered as not normal. Therefore, being not normal will be analyzed by Foucault’s idea of madness (1964) as the framework. In particular, the research analyzes textual evidences which indicate the aspects of madness. By employing a narrative approach in a qualitative method which emphasizes on the analysis of the characters in the novel, the finding reveals two main points. First, that normalcy means obedience. In this case, being obedient means being submissive toward the ward’s rules. Second, the idea of normalcy is determined by those who have power. From the analysis, it can be concluded that normalcy is not a fixed construction, it depends on those who hold the authority. Keywords: Aleph, Paulo Coelho, journey in literature, life meaning, life purpos

Abstract

This study aims to investigate syntactic awareness of word order changes in the categories of verbal structures and the effects of bilingualism and birth order in relation to syntactic awareness. Employing a mixed method (qualitative and quantitative), data were collected in three ways: 1) visual and audio tasks tapping identification and correction, 2) questionnaires for parents to give information on their children’s backgrounds such as bilingualism and birth order, and 3) observation during the task execution by using recorders for response time and production findings. Nineteen kindergarteners aged 5 and 6 years old participated in a kindergarten in North Bandung. The results reveal that syntactic awareness of word order changes has emerged among the preschool students. The high results can be interpreted in four factors: language-specific characteristics, children’s sensitivity to the larger meaning, innateness/competence, and props. For the categories of ditransitive and transitive, syntactic awareness indicates that the more complex the structures are, the more difficult they are to understand. The implication of the result also reveals that the discrepancy between syntactic knowledge and syntactic awareness may have something to do with the separate position between acquisition and metalinguistic awareness. Also, reading is not the necessary precondition for syntactic awareness of word order change. In the end, the findings on the external factors such as bilingualism and birth order do not seem to affect syntactic awareness performance. Keywords: metalinguistic awareness, syntactic awareness, factors of syntactic awareness, preschool students, linguistic knowledge

Abstract

This research investigates the issue of freedom in Anthony Burgess’ novel “A Clockwork Orange (1962). The aim of the research is to identify the way this novel define freedom. The research employs descriptive qualitative method in which the writer describes, interprets and analyses the text to answer the research question. This study uses the works of Anshari (2014) and Gallie (1956) on freedom in post-colonialism along with the works of Swenson (1948) and Dastagir (2007) on freedom in existentialism as the theoretical framework to analyse the data. The findings show that this novel defines freedom through the actions of the main character, Alex who is driven by two factors in three stages of freedom and also a question of freedom that repeated throughout the novel. Moreover, the research also finds that according to the novel, freedom is a treat that is specialized for humans and thus becomes the characteristics of being a human and differentiate humans with any other creature. When humans lose their freedom, they cannot choose and those who cannot choose cease to be humans. Keywords: Post-Colonialism, Existentialism, Freedom

Abstract

The present study entitled “A Case Study of Multimodal Analysis: The Representation of a Female Model in the ‘Insight’ Rubric of Male Magazine 147th Edition” aims at discovering the image of Indonesian women presented in the men’s magazine visually and verbally. Using a descriptive qualitative method, this study applies multimodality based on Halliday’s (1994) Systemic Functional Linguistics to analyze the visual and verbal modes in the data. In the visual stage, the data are analyzed by Kress and van Leeuwen’s (2006) visual grammar, Wilfred’s (1962) meaning of colors, and Barnard’s (2007) theory of fashion and physical appearance. Meanwhile, the verbal data are analyzed Halliday’s (1994) transitivity. The findings show that the integrated visual and verbal modes complement each other to construct the image of the female model. The female model is visually represented as a physically and spiritually beautiful woman with aggressiveness. In addition, the female model is verbally represented as a hardworking, popular, and, curious woman who tends to use her feelings in life. Those representations can lead her to be the sex object for men yet powerful woman. In relation to the gender issue, the study concludes that the magazine reflects how women’s stereotypes change overtime depending on the cultural society. Keywords: Women’s representation, multimodality, visual analysis, verbal analysis, magazine

Abstract

This study explores alienation in Haruki Murakami’s Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman. It studies the aspects of alienation in three selected short stories from Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman: “A Folklore for My Generation: A Pre-History of Late-Stage Capitalism,” “Tony Takitani,” and “Firefly,” and how these aspects manifest in the lives of the people in the selected stories. To achieve the objectives, the study was conducted under postmodernist approach and employs Seeman’s theory on alienation known as Seeman’s Aspects of Alienation (1959) as the theoretical framework of the study. The findings divulge that there are four alienation aspects palpable in the selected short stories: powerlessness, meaninglessness, normlessness, and social isolation. They also disclose that the alienation aspects found manifest through four key points i.e. the unknown origins of alienation, the problem of choices overload, the fragmentation of life aspects, and disconnected relational self. Viewed from postmodern perspective, Murakami’s Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman can be interpreted as a representation of contemporary Japan as it portrays contemporary alienation issues, which are the effects of the breaking down of the Japanese traditional norms establishment, the grand narrative, in at least two occasions in Japanese history, Japan’s involvement and defeat in World War II and the student movement in the sixties. Keywords: Alienation, Postmodernism, Blind Willow Sleeping Woman

Abstract

The complexity of Gone Girl evoked wide aspects to explore. The current study focused on the issue of reality construction in the novel. It was aimed at answering the question of how the male and female central characters constructed the versions of reality through conflicts which were a result of multiple narrative perspectives used in the novel. The data were analyzed by using Bartley, Blanton, and Gilliard’s (2005) three aspects of marital relationship. The findings indicated that the reality in the novel was dominantly constructed through the conflictive marital relationship between the male and female central characters. The conflicts were found in the aspects of marital relationship particularly in the decision making process and the attitude towards gender roles and stereotypes. In terms of decision making, the conflicts resulted from the process and the outcomes of major decision-making including the decision to move to a new city, decision to have children, decision regarding career choices and the decision of getting a divorce. Meanwhile, from the aspect of attitude towards gender roles and stereotypes, the male and female central characters appeared to demonstrate double standards and hypocritical attitudes which led to conflicts in the novel. Therefore, from the findings it could be concluded that the text indicated a tendency for men and women to be involved in conflicts since they had different presumptions, interests, and egos in constructing their version of reality.Key words: reality construction, marital relationship, marital conflicts, decision-making, gender role attitudes, double standardKeywords: reality construction, marital relationship, marital conflicts, decision-making, gender role attitudes, double standard
