Abstract

Translation has been widely recognized as a way to connect cultures among the world through literary works. However, translating literary works is not an easy task, especially poetry. This research entitled “McGlynn versus Aveling: A Comparison of Translation Strategies Used in Sapardi Djoko Damono’s Poems” aims to analyse strategies of translating poetry proposed by Andre Lefevere, and how they can impact the translation results of five poems by two different translators: John McGlynn and Harry Aveling. The poems were collected from three books: Black Magic Rain, Contemporary Indonesian Poetry, and Before Dawn. A descriptive analysis method was employed in this study alongside a little approach of a case study. The findings showed that the most frequent strategy used by both translators was Literal Translation. Strategies used by both translators also affect the lexical thematic, visual, and rhythmic acoustic dimension of the poems indirectly. Keywords: Translation, Poetry, Strategies

Abstract

The study entitled “Comprehending Agent and Agentless Types of English Active and Passive Voice by Indonesian Learners of English” aims to analyze and describe how Indonesians as English learners comprehend agent and agentless types of English active and passive sentences, and to uncover the factors affecting comprehension. The participants of the study were 26 university students from a grammar class of 2015. The two main instruments used were an individual test and a set of questionnaires for personal information. Participants’ performances in the test regarding the agent and agentless types of English active and passive voices were correlated with their personal data which contain aspects affecting their learning of second language. The mean score and percentage of individual result of the test were used to determine the sentences that received the highest and the lowest performances. Two major ways were discovered that help participants comprehend those types of active and passive voices, namely identifying the items in sentences and selecting explicit choices. L1 interference is shown to have significant relations to the participants’ comprehension of agent and agentless types of English active and passive sentences, especially the interference in the structure of sentences and grammatical error. In addition to L1 interference, the factors that were taken into account to contribute to the comprehension, were individual differences. The findings of this study were assessed by using appropriate and relevant linguistic theories. Keywords: Second language learning, agent and agentless types of active and passive voice, L1 interference, Individual differences

Abstract

This paper is entitled “Representation of the Conflict between KPK and POLRI in Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s Speech”. By employing a sociocognitive approach in accordance with the categories of semantic macrostructure and microstructure proposed by van Dijk (2008), the study demonstrates how the representation of the conflict between KPK and POLRI is projected and the ideology behind the former President’s speech. This study focuses on the former President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s speech on October 8th, 2012, which presents his standpoint towards the conflict. The analysis shows that the conflict between KPK and POLRI is represented as frailty of the state institutions in enforcing the law, therefore showing a great political crisis. Regarding the analysis of microstructure, this study also finds that the President shows his full support for KPK more than POLRI as he questions the accusation of Novel Baswedan and the DPR’s offer related to the readjustment of KPK’s regulation. Furthermore, the President shows his egocentric demeanour by significantly emphasising his attempt of reconciliation in response to the public’s expectation. Additionally, the president considers the conflict as a collective responsibility. This consideration is then viewed as a strategy to restore his blackened reputation due to the public’s consideration of the government’s inactivity in resolving the conflict and therefore reflexes a social democracy. Keywords: representation, sociocognitive approach, ideology, macrostructure, microstructure

Abstract

This study explores the idea of American Dream in Chang-Rae Lee’s dystopian novel entitled On Such A Full Sea. It examines how American Dream manifests in the text. To meet the purpose, Cullen’s (2009) theory and indicators of American Dream are used for this research. This research uses qualitative approach in form of textual analysis. The findings reveal that American Dream is not static, as it is always changing. American Dream in the text manifests through the formations of negotiations. These negotiations are in forms of alternatives for their American Dream that appears through the characters’ process of self-learning as they go through their life journey. It is found that there are three out of four indicators of American Dream that appear in the text: freedom, equality, and upward mobility. This study also finds that according to the text, happiness can be attained, even though the American Dreams mentioned are not achieved. Through the characters’ process of self-learning, it is found that being useful for people around, being thankful for what is already owned, and being with loved ones in tough times can result in happiness. Keywords: American Dream, freedom, equality, happiness, upward mobility, dystopian literature

Abstract

The phenomenon of multimodal text in social media and instant messaging service is a challenge for linguists in analyzing today’s conversations which were traditionally dominated by verbal texts. Drawing upon the system of image-text relations proposed by Martinec and Salway (2005), this study focused on the interplay between words and images in students’ LINE conversations. It analyzed the status and logico-semantic relations and how those relations affect the meaning-making process in the conversations. This study employs descriptive qualitative method. This study found that the interplay between words and images in selected LINE conversations realized two status relations, which were equal-independent and unequal-image subordinate to text. The interplay between words and images in LINE conversations also realized three logico-semantic relations, which were extension, exemplification-image more general, and exposition. Both the stickers and verbal expressions were conveyed the meaning equally. Not all stickers were followed by verbal expressions, nevertheless, the participants still understand them. Based on the interviews, the stickers help the participants to visualize the facial expressions and gestures their friends used when communicating with them. Keywords: sexuality, conditioning, young adult dystopian, Delirium

Abstract

Sexuality has been regarded as one of the most prevalent issues in young adult literature. Its  relationship with physical and psychological development of adolescent is what makes the study  significant to be conducted. The present paper focuses on how sexuality is presented in a young  adult dystopian fiction, specifically by investigating how obliteration of sexual intimacy in  human relationship is conducted to create obedient society in Lauren Oliver‟s Delirium. In Delirium universe, the conduct of sexuality is considered as a threat since it stimulates bonding, attachment and love, which have the potential to inverse one‟s loyalty to the state. The analysis  of the qualitative descriptive study is framed by Tuzzeo (2008) study on psychological  conditioning which corresponds to Skinner (1971) study on human behavior. The analysis shows that there are three main strategies implemented by the government. They are creating new social order, obliterating bonding and sexual intimacy and implementing disciplinary system. Lastly, the study suggests the future research conductinganalysis of family representation in dystopian fiction. Keywords: sexuality, conditioning, young adult dystopian, Delirium

Abstract

The present study examines the observance and non-observance of the maxims and investigates the perlocutionary effect of Sherlock Holmes’ utterances. The study employs a descriptive qualitative method in analyzing the conversations. The data are in the form of conversations between the characters in Sherlock TV series episode 1 entitled A Study in Pink. Using Grice’s cooperative principle, the study reveals that character Sherlock Holmes is dominantly performing non-observance of the maxims in his utterances. The occurrences of non-observance of the maxims in characters’ utterances are flouting maxim, violating maxim, and opting out of maxim. The study also shows that flouting maxim of quantity and relation are dominantly occurred in Sherlock Holmes’ utterances. By performing floating maxim of quantity and relation, Sherlock Holmes tends to withhold the information. Generating non-observance of the maxims affects to the interlocutors, in other word is the perlocutionary effects. It is found that the types of perlocutionary acts of Sherlock Holmes’ utterances are various. The occurrence of perlocutionary acts are irritating, amazing, annoying, insulting, impressing, distracting, amusing and prompting. In addition, the findings also indicate that the perlocutionary acts occur depending on each character, whether they are always giving positive or negative feedback to Sherlock Holme’s utterances. Keywords: Grice’s cooperative principle, observance of maxims, non-observance of maxims, types of non-observance of the maxims, perlocutionary acts, Sherlock TV series

Abstract

This historical linguistic study aims to investigate what types of sound changes that happen in the process of linguistic borrowing from English to Esperanto and what factors triggered the changes. It is found that there are 195 English words that are borrowed according to the pronunciation, and there are four categories of sound change that is found: phonological, morphological, orthographically influenced, and abnormal sound change. Regarding the types of sound change, it is found that there are eleven sound changes: sound addition for morphological sound change (34%), vowel raising (13.1%), vowel lowering (7.7%), shortening (6.8%), monophthongization (6.2%), orthographically influenced sound change (4%), vowel raising and fronting (3.5%), fortition (2.7%), deletion (2.6%), vowel raising and backing (1.5%), and vowel lowering and backing (1.2%). It is discovered that the phonological sound changes happen to fulfill the phonological aspects of Esperanto, morphological sound changes occur due to the morphological rules of Esperanto, orthographically influenced sound changes happen to conform to the Esperanto phonological inventory and to maintain the original English spelling for easier word recognition, and abnormal sound change occur to fulfill phonological and morphological aspects of Esperanto with some influences from the orthography. Keywords: historical linguistics, sound change, loanwords, Esperanto, Esperanto studies
