Abstract

Cohesion in a literary text appears to receive less scholarly attention, and the present study attempts to explore how cohesion is realized in a dramatic text Oedipus the King. This study, therefore, examines the use of grammatical and lexical cohesive devices in the dramatic text and its contribution to how the story proceeds. This study is descriptive in nature. In analyzing the data, this study employs theoretical frameworks based on Halliday and Hasan (1976) concerning the concept of cohesive device analysis and Gerot‟s and Wignell‟s point of view (1994) on cohesion interpretation. The data include the expressions used in the drama, and the analysis focuses on the realization of cohesive devices in the text. This study reveals that the text applies all types of cohesive devices, which cover 1,606 grammatical cohesive devices and 341 lexical cohesive devices. This study also shows six ways in which cohesive devices contribute to how the story proceeds. They are (1) to keep track of the participants, (2) to avoid repetition and text redundancy, (3) to control the discourse direction, (4) to emphasize an event, (5) to reduce monotony in language use, and (6) to add information on participants or events. This study is expected to contribute to the understanding of how a story is presented in a literary work, especially a dramatic text. Keywords: grammatical cohesive device, lexical cohesive device, dramatic text, discourse analysis

Abstract

This study aims to investigate first grade students’ awareness in English phonology and the factors influencing English phonological awareness. This study employs a mixed method that uses quantitative and qualitative data such as an assessment test, the questionnaire, and the interview as the data collection. The result of the findings indicates that students’ performance on English phonological awareness emerges from the sound units in the level of syllable, onset-rime, and phoneme. Factors, for instance the chronological order of language acquisition and language proficiency, have a positive effect towards the performance of students’ English phonological awareness. The students may commit a transfer, between the target language and another language previously acquired, that can potentially influence the performance in language development. The reason is because the performance on English phonological awareness is as same as in Indonesian phonological awareness. Keywords: phonological awareness, factors influencing English phonological awareness, first grade students, English as a foreign language

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the translation shifts of nominal groups that occur in The Martian movie subtitle, and investigates how the translation shifts affect meanings. This study employs a qualitative descriptive method as proposed by Cresswell (2007). The data of this study are taken from the movie transcriptions and subtitle in The Martian (2015) movie. The data are analyzed by using Gerot and Wignell’s (1994) theory of nominal groups and Catford’s (1965) category of translation shifts which include structure shift, class shift, unit shift, and intra-system shift. The analysis shows that the process of translating involves single and double translation shifts. In single translation shift, structure shift is the most dominant translation shift (75,7%). In double translation shift, the most dominant shift is the combination of structure and intra-system shift (12,6%). The analysis also shows that the translation process involves the combination of unit and intra-system shift (0,8%), and the combination of class and unit shift (0,3%). The translation shifts are found affecting meanings. There are 37 nominal groups which experience changes in meanings due to the translation shift strategy. The implication of the study relates to the significance of understanding linguistic features as a choice to convey certain meanings in another language. Keywords: Translation Shifts, Nominal Groups, meaning shifts, subtitle

Abstract

This study seeks to examine the realization of strategies of refusal to direct requests by Sundanese and Minangnese students. This study also examines the contribution of power relation, social distance, and rank of imposition to the realization of the refusal strategies. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach. The data used in the present study were gathered from a Discourse Completion test (DCT) that was distributed to 10 Sundanese and 10 Minangnese respondents. The data were analyzed by using Takahashi and Beebe’s (1987) classifications of refusal. The findings show that 13 (out of 16) refusal strategies of Takahashi and Beebe (1987) are evidenced in this study. It is found that from all the 13 strategies, statement of regret and excuse, reason, explanation are the two most frequently used strategies. It is also found that there is no substantial difference in terms of the strategies employed by both Sundanese and Minangnese students; however, some differences can be noted especially with regard to the use of mother tongue, in which Sundanese respondents mixed Indonesian with Sundanese more often than the Minangnese. The study also reveals that less power of the requesters, less social distance between the refusers and requesters, and lower rank of imposition tend to lead the refusers to use the excuse, reason, explanation strategy as their first choice. Meanwhile, more power of the requesters, larger social distance between the refusers and requesters, and higher rank of imposition tend to lead the refusers to use the statement of regret strategyKeywords: Refusal, Sundanese, Minangnese, power, distance, imposition

Abstract

The novel entitled The War of the Worlds has several issues which is interesting to be studied. One of them is the issue of power which becomes the main focus of the present study. Since the novel portrays the war between humans and aliens (specifically, the Martians’ invasion of the Earthlings) and arguments among humans (the Earthlings) illustrate the exercise of power, the bases of power proposed by Raven (2008) are applied in this study to examine the power-related phenomena. Furthermore, the power exercise is analyzed by focusing on conflicts among characters, particularly the conflicts between the Martians and the Earthlings as well as the conflicts among the Earthlings. The findings of the study discovered that the distinctive way of exercising power, particularly in the conflicts, is through coercion and information. This shows that the way power is exercised in the novel is comprehended to be the way text shows its bias towards logical and empirical way of thinking. Keywords: power exercise, conflicts, coercion, information, textual power

Abstract

The present research seeks to examine the representation of the Indonesian Tax Amnesty Program in the Jakarta Post online news articles in terms of macrostructure analysis as well as unveil the underlying ideology of the Jakarta Post with regard to the issue. This research employs a qualitative method by relying on the sociocognitive approach to Critical Discourse Analysis (van Dijk, 2009) to conduct the semantic macrostructure analysis and interpret the results. The data used in this research include ten articles from the Jakarta Post. Through the application of macrorules analysis, there are ten macropropositions derived from the selected articles. The macropropositions are, then, analysed to further examine the representation. It is revealed that the Indonesian Tax Amnesty Program is mostly represented positively in the Jakarta Post. Out of the ten macropropositions, 80% indicate positive representation and 20% indicate neutral representation of the issue. No negative representation is found. Furthermore, it is found that in terms of ideology, the Jakarta Post tends to adhere to capitalism. Keywords: critical discourse analysis, macrostructures, news articles, representation, ideology, tax amnesty program

Abstract

In order to explore the presentation of antihero in Markus Zusak’s I am the Messenger, this study uses Roberts and Jacobs’ (2004) theory on methods of characterization and Brombert’s (1999) and Wilson’s (2013) characteristics of antihero. With the aim of achieving an understanding of the characterization of antihero, this study employs a qualitative method which focuses on the main character’s characteristics, Ed Kennedy. The characteristics of antihero shown through four elements of characterization: environment, appearance, actions, and speech. According to his environment, Ed is characterized as a teenager who has an unhappy life because he belongs to the low economic status. Second, his appearance does not present that he is a protagonist in the novel. Third, he acts like a hero, especially in helping the other characters. Finally, the other characters perceive that he is weak and doubtful. On the other hand, he is an obedient and empathetic person. From the analysis, it can be concluded that he has two different characteristics which are good and bad. Some certain events were constructing him to be a better person. In the beginning of the story, he is only a weak and doubtful person. As the story goes by, he changes; he enforces to feel the fear and empathy. Keywords: antihero; character; characterization

Abstract

Batman franchise is one of the most watched franchises in the history of cinema (Box Office Mojo, 2016). There are at least nine film adaptations of Batman, not including the direct-to-video films, animated films, and television series. There are more than one version of the characters which are consumed by the audience. This study seeks to investigate the portrayals of the Batman villain character Joker in two Batman films entitled Batman (Burton, 1989) and The Dark Knight (Nolan, 2008). Using a qualitative descriptive method, this study employs Boggs and Petrie’s (2008) framework of characterization in films as its analytical tool. Some of Bordwell and Thompson’s (2010) cinematic techniques (i.e., mise-en-scene, camera shot and angle, and sound) are used to strengthen the analysis. The analyses of the portrayals are used to find the signification. The analyses show that the portrayals of Joker have similar traits. However, the portrayals also possess significant differences. Joker in Batman seems to depict human’s corrupted traits whereas Joker in The Dark Knight implies that he is an embodiment of terror. The character Joker is portrayed differently in two different films in order to signify different fears which are circulated in two different time periods. This study reveals that characters based on the same source can signify different representations of fear within the society due to the different time periods the films were produced. Keywords: Batman, character and characterization, cinematic techniques, Joker
