Abstract

This research entitled Focalization in Khaled Hosseini’s The Kite Runner focuses on how focalization relates to the narrative and its effect towards the story. Employing Genette’s (1980) theory of narrative and focalization, the research finds that the two types of focalization, internal dan external, create different effects on the story. Two major effects of focalization make the story become more relatable and helps the story evoke the reader’s curiosity. These effects further emphasize the prominent issues found within the story. These findings have shown how focalization in the novel successfully invites the reader to feel sympathetic towards the human aspect portrayed in the story. It is expected that the research would give the insight into the use of focalization and its effect on the narrativeKeywords: Focalization, Narratology, Genette’s theory, focalizer

Abstract

This paper entitled “Non-Observance of Maxims in Ask.fm Social QA Website” investigates the types of maxims and non-observance of maxims which are broken on purpose by Ask.fm users. It also examines some possible reasons for breaking the maxims. By employing Grice’s (1975) cooperative principle, this qualitative study examines one hundred interactions of Ask.fm users. The findings reveal that maxim of quantity, relation and manner are types of maxims which are not obeyed by the users. In addition, the types of non-observance of maxims identified in this study are flouting and opting out. Finally, reasons for breaking maxims are due to the intention to create jokes, to please others and to avoid cyberbullying. Overall, the findings suggest that by performing non-observance intentionally, it does not necessarily lead to communication breakdown. In fact, it made the conversation in Ask.fm more interesting, relax, and lively. Keywords: Grice’s Cooperative Principle, Non-observance of maxims, social media, website, Ask.fm

Abstract

The novel entitled My Life as a Stuntboy is one of adolescent novels that has several issues to explore. The issue of power relation becomes the main focus of the present research, which is aimed to answer the question of what meanings can be made from the portrayal of parent–child power relation. Power relation in the novel is seen through the conflicts that occur specifically between parents and their child as the main characters of this novel. The data were analyzed by using Dekovic, Gracia-Ruiz, Hernandez-Cabrera, Maiquez, and Rodrigo (2012) conflict resolutions: negotiation and dominance, and Foucault’s (2003/2006) theory of power that states the power which occurs in familial relations includes sovereignty and disciplinary power. The findings of the research revealed that the conflicts in the parent-child relationship are triggered by parents’ expectations toward their child. The conflicts involved the issues related to studying, Frank the monkey, and the child’s wish. Overall, these conflicts were caused by the parents’ demands for the child to be more responsible. The role of society is also found to have affected the parents’ expectations toward their child’s behavior and future. Therefore, based on the findings, it can be concluded that the meaning that can be made from the portrayal of parent–child relationship is that parents use their power to teach their child to be responsible citizen. Keywords: adolescent literature, conflicts, power relations, parent-child relation

Abstract

This descriptive qualitative study aims at discovering types of translation strategies and changes which occur in a student’s translation works. The data were obtained from a student’s 10 unedited translation works from English to Bahasa Indonesia and 10 published translation works in Bahasa Indonesia. The classification of translation strategies proposed by Vinay and Darbelnet (1958, as cited in Munday, 2001) and Bielsa and Bassnett (2009) is used as a tool for analyzing student’s translation works. The findings reveal 11 types of translating strategies found in student’s unedited translation works. They include borrowing, calque, literal translation, transposition, modulation, equivalence, adaptation, change of title, elimination, addition and summarizing. It reveals that the translator mostly used borrowing among other translation strategies in her unedited translation work from English to Bahasa Indonesia by using Vinay and Darbelnet’s translation strategies. Meanwhile, some changes also occur based on the need of publication and the news agency style. Keywords: translation, translation strategies, unedited and published works

Abstract

Masculinity in film is constructed differently, mirroring its construction in the real life. The purpose of the study is to examine the construction of masculinity in The Little Rascals (1994) directed by Penelope Spheeris. Using qualitative method, the study employs theory of masculinity (Connell, 2005), film theory (Heintz Stracey, 2006), and theory of characterization (Boggs Petrie, 2008). The findings show that masculinity in the film is constructed through dialogues and shots. There are two prominent types of masculinity, hegemonic masculinity which is upheld by the main characters Spanky and his gang and complicit masculinity which is upheld by Alfalfa. However, both Spanky and Alfalfa move from one type of masculinity to another; thus strengthening the argument that masculinity construction in the film is fluid. Keywords: Masculinity, construction, hegemonic masculinity, complicit masculinityKeywords: Masculinity, construction, hegemonic masculinity, complicit masculinity

Abstract

The present study explores exchanges in a court trial based on the theory of cooperative principle (CP). This study aims to examine how a defendant violates the cooperative principle during an investigation in a trial. In addition, this study also seeks to analyze the perlocutionary effect of the violation on the prosecutors. The data comprise transcripts of conversations between a defendant and seven prosecutors with regard to the cyanide court case in the 21st court session. The data were analyzed qualitatively by using Grice’s (1975) theory of cooperative principle. Austin’s (1962) account of the perlocutionary act is also used to examine the effect of the violation. The findings show that the defendant violated the cooperative principle through violation of (1) the quality maxim alone and (2) the quality maxim aided with a breach of other maxims (quantity, relation or manner).Violations of the quality maxim alone were committed by giving negative answers and showing lack of memory. Meanwhile, violations of the quality maxim aided with the breach of other maxims were committed by giving irrelevant aspects of information and conveying convoluted answers. With regard to perlocutionary effect on the prosecutors, the violations gave rise to certain responses from the prosecutors, i.e. repeating the questions, revealing the facts, complaining about the defendant’s answers, and directing the defendant to admit the truth. The perlocutionary effect indicates that although violations of the cooperative principle might help the defendant to hide the truth in her answers, the prosecutors did not accept the answers easily. The prosecutors appeared to base their responses more on the information that they had gained previously. Keywords: cyanide court case, cooperative principle, violation, perlocutionary act
