Abstract

The present study examines the flouting and violation of maxims in a defendant’s court testimony. It also investigates the possible reasons for flouting and violation of maxims committed by the defendant. As a descriptive qualitative study, the data of the present study are in the form of transcripts of a defendant’s full testimony in the session 26 regarding the court of Olivier café murder case. By employing Grice’s (1975) theory of Cooperative Principle, the findings show that the defendant flouts the maxims of quality, quantity, relation, and manner. It is also found that the defendant only violates the maxim of quality. This present study also discovers that the reason to why the defendant flouts the maxims is generally to build a public image that she is innocent. Furthermore, the defendant violates the maxim of quality because of the intention to get a lesser sentence in the court. The findings suggest that the defendant of the court tends to flout and violate the maxims in giving her testimony to yield hidden additional meanings and intentions in her utterances as well as to mislead her audiences. Abstract

This study aims to analyze types of structural shifts found in the nominal groups and verbal groups a novel translation and investigate how the structural shifts affect the meaning. This study follows a descriptive qualitative method (see Cresswell (2009). The data of the study are taken from the novel entitled “The Fault in Our Stars” by Green (2012) and the Indonesian version translated by Nimpoeno (2016). The analysis of the study draws on Gerot and Wignell’s (1994) theory of nominal group and transitivity and Catford’s (1965) translation theory as the basis of the categorization of the structural shifts. The data analysis reveals that there are two types of structural shifts found in the data. Those are single translation shift that includes: 1) structure shift, 2) unit shift, 3) class shift, and 4) intra-system shift and double translation shift that is the combination of the shifts. The study shows that the most frequent shifts found in the structural shifts of nominal groups is the combination of structure and class shift (38.94%). On the contrary, the most frequent shift found in the verbal groups is intra-system shift (70.59%) which belongs to the single translation shift. The study shows that structural shifts slightly affect meanings of the translation. This study suggests that linguistic analysis can indicate how learning to translate requires linguistics knowledge of certain language as the expert translators conduct the translation. Abstract

This study aims to investigate the representation of love in George Orwell’s 1984. The data were collected from Part Two and Part Three of the book, focusing on the main characters: Winston Smith and Julia. The present study employs Rimmon-Kenan's (1983) Narratology and Sternberg's (1986) love theory as its analytical tools. The analysis shows that love is represented as three different concepts in the story: perseverance, hope, and a way of rebelling. The analysis also reveals that love is represented as the core element which contributes to the existence of rebellion in the novel. However, because of how strong the government in a dystopian setting is, love is impossible to maintain for a long time. This appears to suggest that, in a dystopian setting, any kind of hope to win against the government seems impossible to achieve. The present study is expected to provide an alternative analysis to literary worksbelonging to dystopian genre. Keywords: representation, dystopia, love, romance, George Orwell’s 1984

Abstract

The study aims to elaborate the generic structure of Indonesian cosmetics advertisements on Instagram and copy elements distribution in the generic structure. Theoretical framework in the study is based on Hasan's (1989a) theory of analyzing genre to elaborate the genre of copy ads on Instagram. Moreover, the copy elements proposed by Maslen (2007) which include feature, benefit, and call to action are also utilized to examine the generic structure in depth using the perspective of copywriting. Qualitative method is used in current research employing descriptive statistics to analyze data. Data collection comprises 32 copy ads from 8 Indonesian-written Instagram accounts which specify in promoting cosmetics products on Instagram. Results show that the genre of Indonesian cosmetics copy ads on Instagram manifested three types of generic components including 'opening', 'product description', and 'closing'. As for the copy elements distribution in the generic structure, benefit and call to action are found mostly in 'opening', feature and benefit are in 'product description', and call to action is found mostly in 'closing'. Further research can be conducted to analyze the data obtained from diverse sources and languages in order to increase the credibility of results in current research. Abstract

This study aims to examine the journey to maturity of the main character, Landon Carter, in A Walk to Remember by Nicholas Sparks, by analyzing the literary elements that construct it. Employing a textual analysis method, this study is framed within Allport’s (1961) theory of maturity, and to discuss the analysis, Bean and Moni’s (2003) theory of young adult literature is also employed. The findings show that Landon’s journey to maturity is depicted mostly through the use of one literary element, namely characterization peculiar to Reams’ (2015). Based on Allport’s (1961) general criteria of maturity, throughout the story, Landon shows six types of maturity: (1) extension of the sense of self, (2) warm relatedness of self to others, (3) emotional security, (4) realistic perception of skills, (5) self-insight, and (6) unifying philosophy of life, and three types of immaturity: (1) an ego-centric sense of self, (2) emotional insecurity, and (3) lack of self-insight. Based on the analysis, several moral values can be obtained by young adult readers with different perspectives from reading Landon’s journey to maturity, such as the importance of being mature and the struggles of attaining maturity. Abstract

Gender stereotypes are notorious for their harmful effects; yet, the stereotypesare still found and encouraged through many aspects of life, including literaryworks such as children’s literature. This present study examines a children-targeted novel to find whether the book conforms or goes against genderstereotypes. The novel examined is written by Eva Ibbotson and titled WhichWitch? (1992). The present study specifically analyzes the gender stereotypicaltraits and attributes found in the characterization of the characters. To analyze thedata, Evan-Davies’ (2000) and Copenhaver’s (2002) lists of traits and attributeshave been drawn on. The study reveals that the book seems to perpetuate andpromote gender stereotypes by embedding gender stereotypical traits andattributes in the characterization of the protagonists of the novel. Abstract

The present study aims to examine the influence of magical events on the development of the major character in the novel Howl’s Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones. The present study uses qualitative approach, particularly descriptive qualitative method. The data were collected by critically selecting the words, phrases, and sentences that reflect events with magical happenings. In analyzing the data, this study employs Nikolajeva’s (1988) magic laws and Tolkien’s (1966) functions of fantasy. The analysis reveals that the magical events influence the development of the main character through the magic laws, which portray certain functions of fantasy. The magic law that dominantly appears in the novel is consistency (i.e., the idea that the secondary world has rules that must be obeyed). Meanwhile, in terms of functions of fantasy, recovery (i.e., recapture the fundamental vision of things) becomes the dominant function primarily shown. The findings of the present study also indicate that, in the fantasy genre, the development of the character is triggered by the elements of surprise and the element of wonder presented in the novel. Abstract

This study entitled The Construction of the Main Child Character’s Identities in Matilda (1996) aims to reveal the construction of Matilda’s identities and to derive meanings behind the construction. This study uses textual analysis and employs theories of identities from Burke and Stets (2009) as well as Boggs and Petrie’s (2008) concept of characterizations, and film style from Bordwell and Thompson (2008). The findings show that Matilda has multiple identities which are constructed based on three bases of identities. Her multiple identities are established through her characterization and supported by cinematic aspects such as shot, color, lighting, and sounds. From the analysis, her character is seen as a non-mainstream construction. She is presented to be more mature than and not necessarily as innocent as other child characters in general. Keywords: children’s films, film style, identity
