Abstract

This study is aimed at investigating the representation of male and female characters in the three short stories of Cerita Pendek tentang Cerita Cinta Pendek and revealing hidden meanings embedded in the representations by identifying the process type choices. This study employs a qualitative method and transitivity analysis proposed by Fairclough’s three-dimensional approach (1989) and Halliday’s transitivity (2004). Based on the analysis, all six process types of transitivity are embedded to male and female characters in which females have the highest number. It means that the short stories tend to represent male characters as a more passive participant while female characters as a more active and powerful participant. This study also finds that the female characters are still victimized by the male characters sexually and violently. The study suggests that the author intended to openly discuss the sexuality issue in Indonesian contexts from females’ perspective. Abstract

Literature has a trend that has grown its fame across the globe, called manga. They are similar in form with Western comic books, but with a different style and structure of the story’s presentation. One of the key elements of a manga’s story, the characters, pique the interest of the researcher. Kaneki Ken is the protagonist of the Tokyo Ghoul series that possesses this interesting characterization to look into. He goes through a journey that changes his characterization in a certain point in the story. To analyze this characterization, two analysis methods are used; Vogler’s (1996) hero’s journey theory and Sicoe’s (2013) character arc theory. The hero’ journey theory is used to gain an understanding of the events Kaneki goes through in his story, while the character arc theory is used to determine the kind of change he experiences. The result shows that Kaneki’s journey is a tragic hero’s journey, different from the traditional hero’s journey, and that he experiences the fall arc, which is, essentially, a tragedy. Furthermore, analysis of Kaneki’s unorthodox hero’s journey leads to the discovery of how an idolized character can start a serialization of literature, and how a serial literature, especially mangas, tend to be devious towards the hero’s journey theory. Abstract

The study aims to: (1) investigate the types of repair strategies, (2) identify the techniques of repair initiation, and (3) discover the possible purposes of particular types of repair that are employed by the participants in a group chat namely Calterone 33. A group’s chat room which consists of 32 participants was chosen to explore the repair strategies. The dialogues contain repair were analysed by using Schegloff, Sacks, and Jefferson’s theory (1977) and Finegan’s theory (2008). The results of the present study reveal that the participants in Calterone 33 used all types of repair strategies in which other-initiated self-repair appears as the most frequently occurs (52.5%). It was affected by the topic selection from the participants with different knowledge which triggered the recipient to initiate a repair. Three techniques of repair from Finegan (2008) were found in group’s chat room, with an asking question technique as the most applied. It was used as the participants urge the explanation of the trouble source from the current speaker. Another technique was discovered in the chat, namely giving possible understanding. Repair strategies were used in online chat for some functions such as to get a further explanation, to clarify a thing, and to rectify the mistyping in the utterance. This study contradicts Zaferanieh (2004) and Meredith and Stokoe (2013) for its claim that SISR appears as the most applied in online chat; nevertheless, it supports Schonfeldt and Golato (2003), Sato (2012), Kendrick’s (2015) study about the use of SISR and other-initiation in conversation. Those findings indicate that the participants in Calterone 33 tend to initiate repair from others’ mistakes which affected by different understanding of the topic. They use other-initiation in order to get an explanation of the trouble source. Keywords: conversation analysis, repair strategy, online chat

Abstract

This paper aims to investigate the portrayal of an autistic character in relation to autism myths in the novel written by Mark Haddon in 2003 entitled The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time. Autistic characters have gained considerable attention in many contemporary literary works. Within the realm of autism myths and method of textual analysis, the main character in The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time (2003) was analyzed to see if it is constructed on the stereotypical autistic character. It is found that the autistic character in the novel is portrayed as an autistic child who has a tendency to avoid social contact with others, independent, affectionate and has special talent and savant skill. Moreover, the study also reveals that the portrayal of an autistic character in the novel confirms three myths of autism but negates four other myths. These findings show that current literary works still rely on the myths of autism that are formed by society to portray an autistic character. Abstract

This qualitative study examines lexical and syntactic features in a commentary of Indonesia U23 against South Korea U23 match. Elan 5.2 software was utilised to identify the features. The data were analysed using Lakoff and Johnson’s (2003) metaphor and Ferguson’s (1983) syntactic features. The results show that there are three types of lexical features: structural, orientational, and ontological metaphors and five types of syntactic features: simplification, inversion, result expression, heavy modifiers, and routines that are deployed in the commentary of the match. The findings show that syntactic features were used mainly to save utterance time, while lexical features were used as analogy for other concepts. The findings suggest that this study affirms to ideas of using metaphor that football is war and omitting subject, or predicator, or object in commentaries. In addition, in Indonesian context, there is a kind of simplification, that is subject plus predicator plus object deletion in an utterance, and there are only two patterns of result expression: noun phrase and verb construction. Abstract

This study explores the use of conjunctive adverbials (CAs) in journals with different indexing levels, specifically to see the distribution of conjunctive adverbials and whether the most dominant conjunctive adverbial is used correctly. Thirty articles were collected from two journals, with specification: fifteen articles from journal indexed in international database (INT) and fifteen articles from journal indexed in national database (NAT), and encoded into INT-01 until INT-15 and NAT-01 until NAT-15. Forty adverbials belonging to four classes of conjunctive adverbials according to Celce-Murcia and Larsen-Freeman (1999) were searched using Laurence Anthony’s concordance program (AntConc). The results show thirty individual conjunctive adverbials from four classes occur in the whole corpus. From this finding, additive class dominates the frequency of occurrence in the whole corpus by 49.4 percent. In line with this result, the most frequently used CA is the conjunctive adverbial also, with 26 percent occurrence from 1380 CAs found in the whole corpus. Based on these results, the analysis is centered on conjunctive adverbial also as the most dominant CA in order to see how this CA is used. The findings show that the conjunctive adverbial also is mostly used correctly; however, there are cases where the use of conjunctive adverbial also is redundant with additive class members, and even overlaps with other classes. In conclusion, the case of overuse and inappropriate register still linger on the use of CAs in academic prose register, whether it is internationally indexed or not. Abstract

In this era of advance information and technology, many e-commerce platforms are rising and competing to attract the prospect customers by creating unique and out of the box video advertisements. Among them are Bukalapak, JD.ID, Lazada, Shopee, and Tokopedia as the top five rising e-commerce platforms in Indonesia which place their video advertisements in YouTube. The objectives of this research are to identify the realization of the generic structure elements in the video advertisements of those five mentioned online shops and how copy elements are distributed in the generic structure of each video. Genre analysis under the theory of Systemic Functional Linguistics by M.A.K Halliday (1984) are utilized as the framework of the analysis to see the generic structure of each video advertisement, and copy elements theory proposed by Maslen (2009) are used to identify the copy elements. The needed data were mainly taken from each online shop's YouTube channel which were further transcribed and put into designed table. This study applies qualitative approach and employs simple descriptive statistics analysis to help mapping out the findings regarding the generic structure of the video advertisements and the copy elements distribution. Keywords: e-commerce, online shop, generic structure, copy element, Systemic Functional Linguistics
