Abstract

This study investigated some strategies applied by the translator in translating Indonesian cultural terms found in the novel Footsteps. The data were taken from the original version of the novel entitled Jejak Langkah and its English version entitled Footsteps. By using qualitative method, this study classified and analyzed the data based on Newmark’s (1988) cultural categories and Venuti’s (1995) domestication and foreignization strategies in translation. The result showed that domestication and foreignization strategies were applied by the translator to translate Indonesian cultural terms with the percentage of 26.92% (domesticated) and 73.08% (foreignized). The most frequently used strategy by the translator in translating the cultural terms make the translation result to be less fluent and less transparent. However, it could make the target language readers feel closer to the nuance of the original story of the novel Footsteps and recognize linguistic and cultural differences of other languages, in this case Indonesian. Keywords: Domestication, Foreignization, Strategi Penerjemahan, Istilah Budaya.

Abstract

This study aims to discover how the antihero is portrayed by Michael Corleone in The Godfather (1969) novel by Mario Puzo. The data were in the forms of words, phrases, sentences, and dialogues between the characters in the novel, which were then categorized into four types of characterization according to Rimmon-Kenan (2003), namely act, appearance, speech, and environment. Furthermore, the data were framed by conflictual points while identifying certain events and narrations that are considered as the portrayal of an antihero using the theory of antihero by Wilson et al. (2013). The data were then analyzed through a descriptive qualitative method to obtain deeper explanation and understanding. The result shows that the novel portrays Michael Corleone as an antihero for having the identical characteristics of an antihero proposed by Wilson et al. (2013), namely empathy, humility, self-awareness, flexibility, and an ability to acknowledge the uncertainty. Therefore, it is found that the characteristics of an antihero are not entirely dominated by negative traits as argued by Pangestu (2017), Jati (2018), and Garcia (2013). An antihero may have some negative traits, but they also have some positive ones. The findings of this study also indicate that the original antihero is the antithesis of a hero because an antihero portrays human nature in general. Keywords: antihero, portrayal, characterization

Abstract

Crazy Rich Asians (2013) is a best-selling novel depicting the life of Chinese characters who were born and grew up in Singapore and America respectively. Throughout their life, they interacted with Chinese as well as American culture which made them culturally hybrid characters. Thus, this study aims to analyze how Chinese characters are represented in the novel and the meaning behind the representation within the qualitative approach and textual analysis method. Using the theory of representation (Hall, 1997) and hybridity (Bhabha, 1994), this study reveals that the Chinese characters are represented through their thought, behavior, and language which inclined towards American culture. It is found that Rachel and Nick, despite their Chinese ethnicity, are represented to adopt and uphold American culture while also maintaining a few aspects of Chinese culture. Rachel adopts and chooses American culture consciously while maintaining her Chinese culture subconsciously. On the other hand, Nick is portrayed to uphold and maintain both American and Chinese cultures by choice throughout the novel. Furthermore, the analysis of this study indicates the effort of the author to challenge and subvert the existing Chinese stereotypes in literature namely yellow peril and model minority by utilizing the characters’ hybridity. The characters are shown to interact and negotiate with the new culture within the “Third Space of Enunciation” where all presumed characteristics and perceptions are nullified. By negotiating the cultures, they invalidate the notion of pure and fixed culture which is glorified by the stereotype of Chinese. Keywords: American culture, Chinese culture, hybridity, representation, stereotype

Abstract

Notions about death and grieving have been part of human life for as long as humans have lived. They can be found in many forms such as art, music and literature including children’s literature. The Thing About Jellyfish (2015), a novel for children which is written by Ali Benjamin, tells about a grieving child who is in the transitional phase of being a child to become a teenager. This research attempts to discover the portrayal of grieving experienced by the child main character in the novel. As a study of text, this research uses qualitative method and it employs Kübler-Ross and Kessler theory of five stages of grief (2014) for analysis and Schroth’s theoretical framework in analyzing portrayal of death, dying and grieving in children’s literature (2017) to support the discussion. The findings reveal that grieving is portrayed through the construction of five stages of grief which may be unintentionally employed by the author. From the stages, it is revealed that grieving is also portrayed as a difficult and painful process for the child main character which ends with acceptance and the importance of moving on from grief. Abstract

The present study investigates how ideational meaning is realized in Indonesian folktales. Three folktales from three different regions were used as the data, namely Malin Kundang, Timun Mas, and Sangkuriang. The analyses were conducted by using the Systemic Functional Linguistics theory proposed by Halliday (1985) as the theoretical framework, mainly focusing on the concept of transitivity. The findings show that material process, relational process, and verbal process are dominantly used in the folktales. There are also the two most identified participants in the folktales, namely goal and actor. The circumstance of time and the circumstance of place become the most frequent circumstances in the folktales. Moreover, the context of situation influences the use of language in the folktales. There are some attributes attached to the subject matters being conveyed, which are about family issues and supernatural events. Lastly, the main participants in the folktales have a variety of attributes representing themselves and their relationships. In conclusion, the findings demonstrate that Indonesian folktales used in this study reflect Indonesian’s cultural beliefs and way of life. Keywords: ideational meaning; transitivity; context of situation; systemic functional linguistics

Abstract

This study investigates the portrayal of sibling rivalry in the novel Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules (2008) by Jeff Kinney. The purpose of this study is to describe how sibling rivalry is portrayed in the novel Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules. The sibling rivalry aspects in the novel is analyzed using the theory of psychoanalysis proposed by Freud (1989) through the events occurring in the novel among the Heffley siblings, which are Rodrick, Greg, and Manny. This study is also supported by the theory of sibling rivalry proposed by Hurlock (2001). This study uses a qualitative method to interpret the data. From the analysis of the study, it was found that the sibling rivalry aspects portrayed in the novel appear in the Heffley sibling’s id, ego, and superego. The findings of the study suggest that the novel portrays some of the sibling rivalry aspects proposed by Hurlock (2001), which are aggression and jealousy. The portrayal of sibling rivalry in the novel is articulated through selfishness, aggression, competition, humiliation, avoidance, jealousy, and lack of appreciation. In addition, the most dominant sibling rivalry aspect is selfishness. However, the sibling rivalry aspects between the Heffley sibling is different from one to another; the eldest, Rodrick, shows the most sibling rivalry aspects. Abstract

This paper aims to investigate écriture féminine features in The Selection Series: The One novel written by Kiera Cass (2014). Female writers of dystopian literary works have increased in the past current years. The fact that the story of The Selection Series by Kiera Cass is narrated from a female perspective in a patriarchal country has drawn a connection to feminist study. This research used descriptive qualitative method and textual analysis that employs the theory of Écriture féminine by Helene Cixous (1976) and patriarchy by Gerda Lerner (1986). It is found that two primary features of écriture feminine, namely patriarchy and bisexual writing, are depicted in the novel as being interrelated. Patriarchy in the novel is mostly found in public sphere; therefore, a large amount of evidence of bisexual writing is found as responses to the patriarchal system. Three main forms of bisexual writing are found in the novel: negotiation, empowerment, and plurality. It seems that Kiera Cass successfully adapts écriture féminine in her novel. However, the end of the story of The One (2014) also implies that the deconstruction of patriarchy occurrs when there are acceptance and willingness of plurality, not only from women but also from men. Keywords: bisexual writing, dystopia, écriture feminine, patriarchy.

Abstract

Racism has always been a never-ending issue in society; one specific racist act is whiteness. The issue of whiteness is still considered an inevitable issue that is still happening until today, and it gives negative impact on the non-white. The issue of racism is often analyzed as a form of prejudice, stereotype, and discrimination. However, the issue of racism is a general issue. Thus, the present research attempts to portray the specific act of racism, which is whiteness. The novel Invisible Man (1952) by Ralph Ellison brings the issue of racism. By using Garner (2007) theory of whiteness, the issue of racism that is present in the novel is analyzed under the four themes of whiteness to provide an alternative understanding of the issue of racism through the lens of whiteness. This research entitled “The Representation of Whiteness in Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man” attempts to reveal how whiteness is constructed as a racist act in the society which becomes the central issue of the novel. This research employs Young’s (1999) theory of representation and Garner’s (2007) theory of whiteness to provides another perspective of whiteness by portraying the themes of whiteness, and how it is constructed in society. The findings show that the issue of whiteness is dominantly exercised through terror and supremacy, and it makes the non-white feel inferior to the White. Keywords: whiteness, white privilege, white supremacy
