Abstract

In its early emergence, the theories of masculinity are often associated with men, then female masculinity theories established and shifted the traditional notion of masculinity concept. This paper is intended to scrutinize the portrayal of masculinity in a major female character in a Joel Coen’s 1998 film entitled The Big Lebowski. Female masculinity is chosen as the main topic considering the shift of gender notions in these past few years using the theory proposed by Judith Halberstam (1998). In order to determine whether the characterization of the main object of this paper portrays masculinity, masculinity characteristics theory presented by Levant (1995) and film theory advanced by Amy Villarejo (2007) are also employed in this study. Using the theories mentioned previously, this paper used the dialogues, a number of mise en scene aspects, namely properties, costumes, hair do and makeup, and also cinematography aspects such as camera shots, angles and frames. The data were collected by taking notes on the character;s masculinity traits throughout the film. It is found that the focused character is depicted to have some masculinity traits through her confidence, emotions hiding, the absence of intimacy in sex. Self-reliant, strength, aggression, power, and domination. Thus, this paper proves that masculinity can also be performed with an absence of male body form. Abstract

This study aims to examine the turn-taking patterns and the possible factors influencing turn-taking in The Help (2011) movie. Particular conversations were used as the data, namely the conversations between Miss Celia and Minny (M1) as well as the conversation between Miss Hilly and Minny (M2). Using the turn-taking theory from Levinson (1983) as set out by Sacks, Schegloff, and Jefferson (1974), this study found three turn-taking patterns that occurred in both conversations; they are self-selection (SS), current speaker selects the next speaker (CS2TNS), and current speaker continues (CSC). Factors influencing turn-taking were also found in the conversations; they are social status and discourse topic. Regarding the turn-taking patterns, self-selection (SS) is the most common pattern that emerged in M1, meanwhile current speaker selects the next speaker (CS2TNS) is the dominant used in M2. The use of SS in M1 indicates that the participants have a close relationship which is portrayed through the topic being discussed. On the contrary, in M2, CS2TNS which occurs mostly in the form of command shows the power of the maid’s master. This suggests that the use of CS2TNS pattern is mostly influenced by social status. Abstract

Being cohesive in writing for deaf students is very crucial as it is a mean of expressing idea to those who do not understand sign language. Thus, this study aims to analyze the cohesion of deaf students’ recount texts in terms of the choice of theme and thematic progression patterns. Using Halliday’s (1994) theory of functional grammar as its main theory, the present study investigates types of theme, thematic progression patterns, and how these two elements support the cohesion of deaf students’ recount texts. The data were collected from 36 recount texts from high achiever and low achiever students from three educational levels. In terms of theme choice, the findings show that low achiever students tend to employ more marked theme (63,64% of the total marked themes) as they lack of the ability to write a grammatically correct sentence. In terms of the thematic progression, theme reiteration pattern is the most frequent pattern employed by deaf students, indicating that they want to make a strong focus on the topic discussed in their recount texts. Keywords: cohesion; theme analysis; recount text; deaf students.

Abstract

This study aims to discover the lexico-grammatical features and social function of Ria Ricis and Atta Halilintar’s, promotional captions on Instagram. There were some frameworks used to guide this research, such as Gerot and Wignell’s explanations about the lexico-grammatical features and social function of descriptive, procedure, and recount text (1995), and Halliday’s transitivity analysis (2014). The qualitative method was used to conduct this research. The results show that promotional captions could consist of descriptive, procedure, and recount texts with different lexico-grammatical features and social function for each text type. Relational Processes dominate descriptive texts, while Material Processes appear frequently in procedure texts. In terms of recount texts, Ria Ricis’ recount texts are dominated by Material Processes while Atta Halilintar’s recount texts contain Material Processes, Mental Processes, and Behavioral Processes. The social function of promotional caption is to sell products and services online. However, each text type has different social function. In promotional captions, procedure texts are used to give the readers instruction on how to buy or get more information about the products. Meanwhile, recount texts are used to tell the readers about the Ria Ricis and Atta Halilintar’s past experiences which are related to the products. Lastly, descriptive texts are used to give details about the products. Keywords: caption, Instagram, lexicogrammar, promotion, social function

Abstract

Globalization has made understanding of cultural diversity more important. However, one challenge caused by cultural diversity is the existence of cultural stereotypes since stereotyping can lead to prejudice and discrimination. This study attempts to examine the stereotypical portrayals of the Indians and the French in Morais’ The Hundred-Foot Journey (2010) from Orientalism perspective since studies on this work are still limited. This study draws on Said’s (1978) theory on Orientalism. In addition, this study also employs Little’s (1966) theory on characterization to support the analysis of the data. The finding reveals the author presents Indian and French in a contrast way in which one is regarded as inferior and the other as superior. Furthermore, it is also found that the relation between them is similar to the relations between the Orient and the Occident which are argued by Said (1978) as a kind of relationship which distinguishes ‘self’ and ‘other’ that is filled with power and domination. Keywords: Orientalism, stereotypes, othering, power

Abstract

This study aims to find out the translation techniques used by the translator to do the act of censorship in translating the subtitle in Suicide Squad and Deadpool 2 movies. This study also analyzes the translation shift in the subtitle and acceptability of the translation. This study employs a qualitative method of data collection and analysis informed by Pinker’s (2007) profanity classification according to its purpose, Molina and Albir’s (2002) concept of translation and Newmark’s (1988; 1981) concept of transposition and translation acceptability. The study found five types of profanity based on its purpose in 213 utterances spoken by the movie characters and 11 translation techniques applied to those utterances. Those five types of profanity include idiomatically, abusively, cathartically, descriptively, and emphatically in the two movies. The study also found four types of translation shifts (automatic, grammatical structure, natural grammatical, lexical gap) as a means of maintaining the meanings of the source language (SL). The meanings shift as a result of an act of translation censorship strategies. The study shows that transferring meaning into other languages such as in the process of subtitling translation could incur potential changes in meaning. Keywords: censorship, profanity, translation techniques, translation shift, translation acceptability.

Abstract

YouTube has now become one of the most successful video-sharing platforms used by many people around the world. It seems that one of the reasons why people tend to choose YouTube rather than any other video-sharing platform is the attractive headline. This study aims to reveal the realization of interpersonal meaning in YouTube video headlines and to reveal the realization of interpersonal meaning in different types of headlines. This study is largely qualitative supported by descriptive quantification. The data include a hundred headlines collected from Jay Shetty’s channel on YouTube. In order to find out the realization of interpersonal meaning, the headlines are categorized based on the speech function and its typicality proposed by Halliday and Matthiessen (2014). The headlines are also categorized by using Maslen’s (2010) types of headlines. There are two findings of this study. Firstly, four initiating speech functions are realized in Jay Shetty’s headlines namely statement, question, command, and offer. The dominant speech function found in this study is offer, which is realized untypically in the imperative mood. Secondly, the dominant type of headlines found in this study is the headlines that arouse the curiosity of the readers. This type of headline appears in all of the speech functions found in this study. Keywords: Interpersonal meaning; speech function; types of headlines; typicality.
