Abstract

Streptococcus mutans is one of the microorganisms in the oral cavity that can cause cavities. Preventionthat can be done to avoid this disease with mouthwash that contains antiseptic. Alternative methods can bedeveloped by utilizing natural ingredients as the basic ingredients for making mouthwash. Fragrant pandanleaves (Pandanus amaryllifolius roxb) contain several active compounds including flavonoids, tannins, andalkaloids that have the potential to have antibacterial activity. This study aims to determine the value of theMinimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) of pandan leafethanol extract against Streptococcus mutans bacteria. Fragrant pandan leaf extract was obtained bymaceration method using 70% ethanol solvent with various concentrations of 0.36%, 0.78%, 1.56%, 3.12%,6.25%, 12.5%, 25%, 50 %, and 100%. The determination of the MIC value was carried out by the liquiddilution method using a UV-Vis Spectrophotometer. While the determination of the value of MBC is done bythe Spread plate method. The results showed that the MIC value was at a concentration of 6.25% because itwas able to inhibit the growth of bacteria. While the MBC value is at a concentration of 25%, where at thatconcentration there are no bacterial colonies growing.

Abstract

Besides being able to synthesize silica from its precursors, silica can also be extracted through naturalmaterials, one of which is from geothermal solid waste at geothermal power plant sites. In this research, synthesis of silica compounds from geothermal solid waste has been carried out using the sol-gel method. The purpose of this study was to obtain silica compounds from geothermal solid waste with various implementations of adding HCl in the sol-gel method, namely by drip method and flow method. The silica products formed were then characterized based on their chemical bonding, crystallinity and particle size. The HCl material used in this study was varied at the level of pro-analyst (p.a) and laboratory grade purity. The silica products obtained had yields of 25.74% and 9.93% for the drip method and flow method, respectively. The characterizations of the resulting silica products include FTIR analysis for the bonding characteristics of the compounds, X-ray diffraction for the crystallinity character and the dynamic light scattering method to determine the product particle size. Characteristics of chemical bonding from wave number absorption analysis with FITR indicated that the resulting product was silica.

Abstract

Complex compounds of between nickel and N,N’-dietilthiourea (detu) with mol ratio 1:4 weresuccessfully synthesized using direct synthesis and reflux methods. Ni-detu(DR) and Ni-detu(R) sampleswhich were obtained using direct synthesis and reflux methods melted at 159-161°C dan 114-116°C,respectively. Analizing FTIR of both samples indicated υ(N-H) bonds in the range of 3233-3235 cm-1 , υ(CH) 2964-2974 cm-1, υ(C-N) 1562-1579 cm-1 , υ(C=S) 646-653 cm-1. Refinement of Ni-detu(DR)samples usinggenerated XRD of reported CIF files gave Rwp of 11.63% proposed that the formula is [Ni(detu)4]Cl2. TheVSM measurements concluded that both samples were diamagnetic complexes.

Abstract

Ulva sp and Gracilaria sp are found on the coast of Sayang Heulang beach and have potential as naturalantioxidants. This study aims to determine the antioxidant capacity of the two types of seaweed using the FRAP (Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power) method. Ulva sp and Gracilaria sp were taken from Sayang HeulangBeach in March 2022. Each type of seaweed extracted using 70% ethanol for 3x24 hours. The extract thenconcentrated using a rotary evaporator for further analysis. The results of phytochemical screening showed that the ethanolic extract of Ulva sp was positive for flavonoids, tannins, saponins, and alkaloids, while the Gracilaria sp extract was positive for alkaloids, flavonoid tannins, steroids, and saponins. The antioxidant capasity of Ulva sp and Gracilaria sp ethanol extracts carried using the FRAP method with ascorbic acid used as standard. Each extract was measured using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer with a wavelength of 694 nm. The measurement results were expressed as mg equivalent of ascorbic acid/gram extract (mg AAE/gr sample). The analysis showed that the ethanolic extracts of Ulva sp and Gracilaria sp had antioxidant capacity values of 1.8 mg AAE/gr sample and 5.50 mg AAE/gr sample, respectively.

Abstract

Inflammation is a protective response caused by tissue damage, one of which is the result of proteindenaturation. Polyherbal formulations have pharmacological activity that can work dynamically to producemaximum therapeutic benefits with minimal side effects. The purpose of this study was to determine the totalcontents of flavonoids and anti-inflammatory activity of single extracts of secang (ES) and red ginger (EJ) andthe combination of the two extracts, namely: formulations F1 (1ES:1EJ), F2 (2ES:1EJ), and F3 (1ES:2EJ).This research is an experimental research and carried out in vitro. Secang and red ginger extraction wascarried out using the maceration method with 96% ethanol. Determination of total flavonoid content wascarried out using the reaction method of aluminum chloride with quarcetin as a standard. Testing of antiinflammatory activity was carried out in vitro using the BSA protein denaturation method with diclofenacsodium as a positive control. The results showed that the total flavonoid content of secang extract was 37.96 ±0.27 mgQE/g extract and red ginger extract was 26.51 ± 0.79 mgQE/g extract.
