Abstract

This study aims to describe EFL learners’ attitudes towards the improvement of their English speaking performance. The data were collected through a questionnaire distributed to 131 students of Department of English Language Education. The results of the dataanalysis show that all respondents show positive attitudes towards the improvement of their English speaking performance. Although female students have more positive attitudes than male students, the difference is not significant. The results also show that students’ attitudes towards their speaking performance change in accordance with their learning time. Their self-assessment of their speaking performance has a significant correlation with their attitudes. Their positive attitudes towards the improvement of their English speaking performance serve as a foundation to the success of the English language learning. Therefore, learners should pay attention to and maintain attitudes to improve their speaking performance.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the phonological aspects of the Ai’aowe variety in the Kamoro language as one of the Papuan languages in Mimika Regency. It employed the qualitative descriptive method using the structural approach. The findings are as follows. First, the Ai’aowe variety in the Kamoro language has more vowels than consonants. There are ten vowels, namely /i/, /ii/, /e/, /ee/, /a/, /aa/, /u/, /uu/, /o/, /oo/ and eight consonants, namely /p/, /m/, /t/, /n/, /r/, /w/, /y/, /?/. Second, in this language there are only open syllables, so that there are only two types of syllable patterns, namely V and CV. The stress falls on the final syllable. Third, in the morphophonemic process, a verbal change is influenced by the person, tense, and aspect, making a word longer with more syllables. Fourth, the Ai’aowe variety in the Kamoro language is influenced by outside languages, including Indonesian, so that there is a tendency for nonnative phonemes to exist.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the constestation of French writers’ ideologies during the era of World War II through their works. The primary data sources were “Le Mur”by Sartre, “L’Etranger” by Albert Camus, and “L’Attente de Dieu” Simone Weil. On the one hand the writers play roles as ones telling the world through their fiction, but on the otherhand they have active roles in positioning their believed ideologies. The study employed the Critical Discourse Analysis method. The discourses emphasize that God is viewed as personal, social, historical experiences contested by Sartre, Camus, and Weil in their works. They discuss God using different perspectives. The findings show that God isphilosophically positioned at the levels of being existent and non-existent, present and absent, and active and passive. Sartre and Camus are on the same line when talking about God’s absence in human existence. Meanwhile, Simone Weil, who is very religious, views that God is concretely present in human life.
