Abstract

Abstract : The global pandemic of the infectious disease COVID-19 has caused concern for all citizens of the world. Not only in the health sector, but also in other sectors, be it trade, economy, security, politics, transportation, and education. The policy of closing schools and colleges had to be taken to prevent the spread of the Coronavirus. Even though at the beginning of the pandemic, some countries are still trying to open schools as usual. However, in the end, due to the increasingly widespread pandemic, measures to close schools and universities had to be taken to save the education sector. The purpose of this study is to analyze students' online learning motivation in the Tourism and Hospitality Management Information System practice course which is usually carried out in a computer laboratory during the global pandemic of the COVID 19 infectious disease. This research will be conducted using a descriptive qualitative research design.. Positive responses from the lecture aspect, the ability of lecturers, facilities, and infrastructure also have a positive effect on student motivation in undergoing online lectures. The level of activity and motivation is high with the average percentage of student attendance in 1 semester reaching 92% and the collection of assignments is 85% . However, the limited financial ability of students so that the ability to buy devices is not sufficient and geographical conditions with minimal internet connections are the main obstacles to online lectures.

Abstract

Scientific writing like abstract demands perfect grammar writing in academic language. A common error usually is the use of an automated translator such as Google Translate to translate abstracts from Indonesian to English. The translation produced needs to be polished again to avoid mistakes in the grammar itself. The objective of this research is to find the type of grammatical error in English abstracts published in Jurnal Ilmiah Ekonomi Islam (JIEI) journal in 2020 both English and Indonesian. This research uses descriptive qualitative. The result of the study shows that three types of grammatical errors found in English abstracts in the JIEI journal are misinformation, omission, and addition. In misinformation error, there are 98 data or 44.5 %. In omission error, there are 69 data or 31.36 %. In addition to error, there are 53 data or 24.09 %. In misinformation, several errors were found in the use of part of speech such as article/determiner, the preposition, verb (subject-verb agreement), noun (singular-plural), and pronoun. In omission, several errors were found in the omission of part of speech such as article ‘a, an, the’, preposition ‘on’ and ‘to’. In addition, several errors were found in the addition part of speech such as article/determiner ‘a, an, the”, preposition “of, to, in, on, at”. Preposition sometimes is not used with certain verbs and expressions. The most dominant type of grammatical error is misinformation. There is the misuse of grammar forms into other grammatical forms in the use of part of speech such as in the determiner/article, preposition, verb, noun, and pronoun.

Abstract

This study aims to reveal the postcolonial issues contained in poetry I, Too by Langston Hughes and Incident by Countee Cullen. Both authors of these poems are figures from black people in America. The method used in this study is the qualitative method and literature study approach with the aim of exploring, describing, and understanding how the hybridity and dominance of whites over blacks in American poetry. The data source of this study is the words and phrases in both poems. The data containing postcolonial: hybridity and mimicry in the poems were characterized and analyzed using Homi K. Bhabha's theory (2007). Bhabha in his thinking tries to provide a "middle space" between the colonizer and the colonized. Bhabha states the concept of a “middle space” as a time-lag. This space is an intercultural space where personal and communal self-defense strategies can be developed. All of these cultural expressions and systems are built in a space called the “third space of enunciation”. Interestingly, the issue of hybridity that occurred a century ago has not completely gone in a better direction. The proof is that at the beginning of the first semester of 2020 there was an incident of violence against blacks by whites which caused a massive demonstration that led to the creation of a movement group called Black Lives Matter. This study uncovers how bad the treatment of white people towards black people is that the position and social stratifications between them are different.

Abstract

This study answers two questions: what equivalence rules of terms are dominantly found in the absorption words during the Covid-19 pandemic, and how acceptable these terms are in the Indonesian-speaking community. The data were collected by using documentation or observation method, supported by the use of a questionnaire. The data were analyzed by using intralingual equivalence and descriptive analysis methods. The results show that 33 foreign terms were matched using translation techniques, ten words with absorption techniques, and two words with combined translation and absorption techniques. Furthermore, the acceptability of absorption terms during the Corona virus pandemic is 39%, while 61% indicates the unacceptability of absorption terms during the Corona virus pandemic.

Abstract

This study was aimed to find out the effectiveness of using Two Stay Two Stray (TSTS) strategy on the students' reading comprehension achievement of the first semester students of English department at Universitas Pamulang, and to know the students’ perspective in applying TSTS. A quantitative approach was conducted in this research by applying Independent T-test calculation. To obtain the data, the writers selected the sample comprised 60 students (30 students in experimental class and 30 students in control class) by having random sampling.  The experimental class was taught by using Two Stay Two Stray (TSTS) strategy and the control class was taught by using conventional method. To collect the data, the writers used two kinds of instruments: a reading test and a questionnaire. These instruments were administered to answer stated research questions. A reading test was used to find out the effectiveness of TSTS strategy by SPSS calculation, and the questionnaire was distributed to find out the students’ perspectives in applying TSTS in reading activity. The research findings indicated the result of hypothesis based on Mann-Whitney U test the Sig 2-tailed value 0.019 < 0.05 which means that the Null Hypothesis (H0) is rejected and Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. Therefore, it can be inferred that the Two Stay Two Stray (TSTS) strategy has effectiveness in learning reading comprehension of the students. Furthermore, students assume that Two Stay Two Stray (TSTS) strategy is more enjoyable than the previous strategy (7.7%), they guess the main ideas of the text on the basis of pictures, charts or figures (7,4), and they understand my reading comprehension text before straying to another group (7.3%). Therefore, it shows the Two Stay Two Stray strategy shares the beneficial encouragement on the students reading comprehension.
