The use of biometrics as an automatic recognition system is growing rapidly in solving security problems; palmprint is one of biometric system which often used. This paper used two steps in center of mass moment method for region of interest (ROI) segmentation and apply the time series method combined with block window method as feature representation. Normalized Euclidean Distance is used to measure the similarity degrees of two feature vectors of palm print. System testing is done using 500 samples palms, with 4 samples as the reference image and the 6 samples as test images. Experiment results show this system can achieve a high performance with success rate about 97.33% (FNMR=1.67%, FMR=1.00 %, T=0.036).

The battery state-of-charge estimation was one of core issues in the development of electric vehicles battery management system, and higher accurate model was needed in state-of-charge estimation correctly. Therefore, accurate battery modeling and simulation was researched here. The Thevenin equivalent circuit model of NiMH battery was established for the poor accuracy of traditional model. Based on the data which were brought from the 6V 6Ah NiMH battery hybrid pulse cycling test experiments, Thevenin model parameters were identified by means of the linear regression analysis method. Then, the battery equivalent circuit simulating model was built in the MATLAB/Simulink environment. The simulation and experimental results showed that the model has better accuracy and can be used to guide the battery state-of-charge estimation.

Data mining process on dynamically changing data have several problems, such as unknown data size and changing of class distribution. Random sampling method commonly applied for extracting general synopsis from very large database. In this research, Vitter’s reservoir algorithm is used to retrieve k records of data from the database and put into the sample. Sample is used as input for classification task in data mining. Sample type is backing sample and it saved as table contains value of id, priority and timestamp. Priority indicates the probability of how long data retained in the sample. Kullback-Leibler divergence applied to measure the similarity between database and sample distribution. Result of this research is showed that continuously taken samples randomly is possible when transaction occurs. Kullback-Leibler divergence with interval from 0 to 0.0001, is a very good measure to maintain similar class distribution between database and sample. Sample results are always up to date on new transactions with similar class distribution. Classifier built from balance class distribution showed to have better performance than from imbalance one.

Separability filter method is a reliable method for pupil detection. However, so far this method is implemented for detecting pupil of normal eye, while for abnormal eye such as cataract and glaucoma patients; they have different characteristics of pupil such as color, shape and radius size of pupil. In this paper we propose to use separability filter for detecting pupil of abnormal patients with different characteristics. We faced a problem about radius size, shape and color of pupil; therefore we implemented Hough Transform, Blob area and Brightness for identifying input images before applying separability filter. The experiment results show that we can increase performance of pupil detection for abnormal eye to be 95.65%.

Conventional erecting mechanism is cumbersome and the erecting velocity is slow, so a new hydraulic erecting mechanism is introduced in this paper. But it has two problems. First is the cooperation problem between the erect cylinder and the horizontal cylinder. Second, the nonlinearities and uncertainties exist in the system make the control precision poor. So the combined simulation model is built based on the software AMESim and Simulink. And from this model, the best cooperation time is confirmed. Further, the fuzzy adaptive PID controller is introduced to improve the control performance aiming to the nonlinearities and uncertainties. The fuzzy inference rules and parameters of the controller are also presented in this paper. Experiment results show that the cooperation time which received from the simulation is correct, and the fuzzy adaptive PID controller has nice tracking performance compared to the conventional PID controller and fuzzy controller.

Gas insulated transmission lines (GIL) are a new technology for transmitting power over long distances. In this paper, an analytical method (AM) is proposed to investigate the coupled magnetothermal problem in GIL. Kelvin functions are employed to calculate the skin effect coefficients of the conductor and the enclosure. The calculated power losses are used as heat source input for the thermal analysis. Considering the convective and radiation heat transfer effects, the heat balance equations on the surface of the conductor and the enclosure are established, respectively. Temperature rise of the GIL at different operation conditions are investigated. The proposed method is validated against the finite element method (FEM). The simplicity of the approach makes it attractive for self-made software implementation in the thermal design and the condition monitoring of GIL.

This paper reviewed all the possible interfacing communication protocols for remote terminal unit (RTU). Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system is a central station that can communicate with other network using the protocol. Fundamentally, the architectures of all networks are based on the seven layers of open system interconnection (OSI) and International Standard Organization (ISO). The objective of designing the protocols is to check the status of all the input and output field devices and send the report according to that status. The corresponding protocol and communication parameters between the connecting devices will be included in designing a complex SCADA system. The available protocols to develop the communication of RTU are Modbus/ASCII, distributed network protocol (DNP3), controller area network (CAN), International Electro-technical Commission (IEC 60870), and transmission control protocol/internet protocol (TCP/IP).

The conventional direct torque control will inevitably produce torque ripple because of its way of flux estimates. For the purpose of handling this problem, a new control strategy was presented in this paper. This strategy combined subdivides control with voltage vector and fuzzy logic control in traditional direct torque control. In this model, the fuzzy logic combined the phase angle of the flux, the flux error and torque error as fuzzy variables and classified these fuzzy variables, in order to optimize the choice of voltage space vector, and the same time the traditional PID regulator is replaced by a fuzzy regulator. Simulation results show that, a great improvement torque responses , a great reduction of torque ripples is achieved and the strategy has a better dynamic and steady performance, especially in low-speed area.

This work developed a fully-automated and efficient method for detecting contour of common carotid artery in the cross section view of two-dimensional B-mode sonography. First, we applied a preprocessing filter to the ultrasound image for the sake of reducing speckle. An adaptive initial contouring method was then performed to obtain the initial contour for level set segmentation. Finally, the localizing region-based level set segmentation automatically extracted the precise contours of common carotid artery. The proposed method evaluated 130 ultrasound images from three healthy volunteers and the segmentation results were compared to the boundaries outlined by an expert. Preliminary results showed that the method described here could identify the contour of common carotid artery with satisfactory accuracy in this dataset.
