Abstract

This paper aims to design an accurate angular position control for DC motors using a proportional integral derivative (PID) controller. The estimated DC motor parameters have been calculated using the parameter estimator toolbox in MATLAB, Arduino Mega 2560 and speed sensor to build an accurate model in MATLAB. The optimized PID coefficients are found for the DC motor model using the firefly algorithm (FA), which aims to make the actual angle match the desired value without overshooting and oscillations. The PIC16F877A microcontroller was used to implement the code based on optimized PID coefficients found in MATLAB/Simulink to generate the suitable pulse width modulation (PWM) output. In this work, step input was tested to analyze the characteristics of the system response in terms of rise time, settling time and overshoot. It was found that the controller output response curve which is produced from FA-based-PID reached the desired position without overshoot and any oscillations. The findings established that closed-loop control of any system using a system identification toolbox and optimized PID technique can be applied in real applications using low-cost controllers and sensors such as PIC16F877A microcontroller and analog rotary position sensor, respectively.

Abstract

The internet of things (IoT) research envisions a world in which common place objects are linked to the internet and trade, store, process, and gather data from their surroundings. Due to their inherent resource limitations, IoT devices are typically unable to directly host application services, despite their increasing importance for facilitating the supply of data to enable electronic services. Since it can survive and work in tandem with centralized cloud systems and extends the latter toward the network edge, fog computing (FC) may be an appropriate paradigm to get around these restrictions. This paper reviews the overview of the IoT in terms of application and design parameters and FC. Meanwhile, this paper presents the architecture of fog computing for IoT (FC-IoT) in terms of communication, security, data quality, sensing and actuation management, codification, analysis, and decision-making. Additionally, this review provides several characteristics and challenges of FC-IoT. Finally, open issues for this paper have been discussed.

Abstract

The use of rechargeable batteries for electrical energy storage requires a voltage balancing system. The voltage balancing system requires monitoring in the use of rechargeable batteries so that they can be utilized properly and can improve the electrical energy storage system. In this research, a monitored lead acid battery voltage balancing system was designed so that the management of the battery voltage balance level and the storage of electrical energy in rechargeable batteries can be stored and used optimally. In this research a series of lead acid battery voltage detection and power dissipation circuits were designed. The power dissipation circuit uses the controlled shunt resistor method which is used when the voltage of the lead acid battery being charged exceeds the maximum voltage. This method is easy to implement and can display the value of the lead acid battery voltage and other parameters, so that it can be monitored by the user. The results obtained show that the average voltage error for batteries 1 and 2 is 0.09% and 0.3% respectively. The power dissipation circuit can dissipate lead acid battery power above the reference voltage VREF=±7 V, with a balanced voltage of 6.8 V at 140 minutes and 160 minutes.

Abstract

The field of smart agriculture is ranked among the top areas that uses the internet of things (IoT), whose goal is to increase the quantity and quality of agricultural productivity. The aim of this work is to realize a new device that will be cost-effective, reliable, and autonomous using a solar panel to provide electricity in large-scale agricultural fields, ESP32 to interconnect IoT sensors and the long range (LoRa) data transmission protocol to guarantee connectivity in places where there is no internet, whose objective is to monitor and irrigate agricultural fields only when there is a need for water. The data received by the sensors is sent to mobile app users via the Blynk cloud. The performance of our new approach is measured in terms of energy savings. This new model of irrigation and smart monitoring will improve the efficiency of farming techniques.

Abstract

In this research manuscript, a new protocol is proposed for predicting the available space in the cloud and verifying the security of stored data. The protocol is utilized for learning the available data, and based on this learning, the available storage space is identified, after which the cloud service providers allow for data storage. The Integrity verification separates the private and the public data, which avoids privacy issues. The integration of the private data is done with the help of cloud service providers with respect to the third-party auditing (TPA). Earlier, public key cryptography and bilinear map technologies have been combined by the researchers, but the computation time and costs were high. To secure the integrity of the data storage, the client should execute several computations. Therefore, this research suggests a reliable and effective method called position-aware Merkle tree (PMT), which is implemented for ensuring data integrity. The proposed system uses a PMT that enables the TPA to perform multiple auditing tasks with high efficiency, less computational cost and computation time. Simulation results clearly shows that the developed PMT method consumed 0.00459 milliseconds of computation time, which is limited when compared to the existing models.

Abstract

This paper presents a scheme to start three-phase induction motors (IMs) directly connected to terminals of constant V/f controlled doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) through the rotor side converter (RSC). The proposed control is achieved by controlling the output voltage and frequency of stand-alone DFIG via controlling an injected voltage into the rotor circuit through the RSC. The control scheme provides a search for maximum rating of the three-phase IM which can be supplied from a DFIG. The search technique is based on using a simplified mathematical model to find the capability limits of the RSC and DFIG. It is found that these parameters depend on the stator frequency and rotor slip. Therefore, an investigation is performed to find the lowest frequency and the corresponding allowable maximum rating for the IM to be safely started. A typical example is provided in the paper for a 15 kW DFIG. It is shown that this generator could supply a three-phase IM with a maximum rating of 1-hp if it operated at nominal outputs, voltage and frequency, during start-up period. While, using the proposed technique, the same generator could start-up a three-phase IM with maximum power rating of 7.25 hp.

Abstract

The optimal unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) path planning using bio-inspired algorithms requires high computation and low convergence in a complex 3D environment. To solve this problem, a hybrid A*-FPA algorithm was proposed that combines the A* algorithm with a flower pollination algorithm (FPA). The main idea of this algorithm is to balance the high speed of the A* exploration ability with the FPA exploitation ability to find an optimal 3D UAV path. At first, the algorithm starts by finding the locally optimal path based on a grid map, and the result is a set of path nodes. The algorithm will select three discovered nodes and set the FPA's initial population. Finally, the FPA is applied to obtain the optimal path. The proposed algorithm's performance was compared with the A*, FPA, genetic algorithm (GA), and partical swarm optimization (PSO) algorithms, where the comparison is done based on four factors: the best path, mean path, standard deviation, and worst path length. The simulation results showed that the proposed algorithm outperformed all previously mentioned algorithms in finding the optimal path in all scenarios, significantly improving the best path length and mean path length of 79.3% and 147.8%, respectively.

Abstract

A micro grid system with renewable source operation control is a complex part as each source operates at different parameters. This renewable micro grid with multiple sources like solar plants, wind farm, fuel cell, battery backup has to be operated in both grid connected and standalone condition. During grid connection the micro grid, inverter has to inject power to the grid and compensate load in synchronization to the grid voltages. And during standalone condition the inverter is controlled with droop control module which stabilizes the voltage and frequency of the system even during grid disconnection. The droop control module is further updated with new advanced controllers like fuzzy inference system (FIS) and adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) replacing the traditional proportional integral derivative (PID) and proportional integral (PI) controllers improving the response rate and for achieving better stabilization. This paper has comparative analysis of the micro grid system with different droop controllers under various operating conditions. Parameters like voltage magnitude (Vmag), frequency (F), load and inverter powers (Pload and Pinv) of the test system are compared with different controllers. A numeric comparison table is given to determine the optimal controller for the inverter operation. The analysis is carried out in MATLAB/Simulink software with graphical and parametric validations.
