Abstract

The objective of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of different regression models in concrete compressive strength estimation. A concrete compressive strength dataset is employed for the estimation of the regressor models. Regression models such as linear regressor, ridge regressor, k-neighbors regressor, decision tree regressor, random forest regressor, gradient boosting regressor, AdaBoost regressor, and support vector regressor are used for developing the model that predicts the concrete strength. Cross-validation techniques and grid search are used to tune the parameters for better model performance. Python 3.8 programming language is used to conduct the experiment. The Performance evaluation result reveals that the gradient boosting regressor has better performance as compared to other models using root mean square error (RMSE).

Abstract

In this research, we propose a method to calculate the phase delay angle of the reflected wave compared to the wave emitted from the interdigital transducer (IDT) of a passive wireless surface acoustic wave (SAW) sensor by combining simulation of the finite element method (FEM) and MATLAB. Based on the result, we consider the influence of the reflector position on the phase delay of the SAW sensor consisting of an IDT and three equally spaced reflectors. The distances between the IDT and the first reflector are 870 micrometers, 939.6 micrometers, and 1009.2 micrometers, and the distances between the reflector positions are 452.4 micrometers, 522 micrometers, and 591.6 micrometers. The outputs of the FEM simulation, including delay time, amplitude loss, and the length of the reflected wave are put into the model in MATLAB to determine the phase delay of the response waves. The obtained phase delay results show that as the distance between the IDT and the reflectors increases, the phase delay angle increases to 4.49 degrees, 5.39 degrees, and 5.78 degrees, respectively.

Abstract

The majority of dams still use traditional technologies to manage water gates. These strategies have a number of limitations, including those related to human error. This study describes an automated method for controlling and managing dams based on the structure of a cyber-physical system (CPS) in order to reduce work hazards and human efforts. The suggested system design consists of four ESP8266 nodes, each connected to a water level sensor and distributed around the main dam and its feeder sections. These nodes are linked to a central server (Raspberry Pi4). The data is gathered and retransmitted through the message queuing telemetry transfer (MQTT) protocol to the (Raspberry Pi4) central server via wireless sensor nodes (WSNs) distributed on the dam's various sides to regulate the water levels in the dam's main reservoir and the areas it feeds. Furthermore, the Raspberry Pi4 transmits data to the cloud server using internet media. A cloud-based dashboard with numerous tabs for each node has been constructed. The results of the experiments reveal that the proposed technique is superior to the ones currently in use for dam management.

Abstract

Autonomous vehicle field has seen much development in recent years, especially with the appearance of new efficient control techniques focusing on longitudinal and lateral direction in order to follow a specified trajectory or path. This paper proposes a new systematic control technique to simultaneously generate a suitable speed profile and control the vehicle lateral motion through a predetermined path that considers different driving scenarios representing real-world driving. First, an extended-kinematic model for an autonomous vehicle is designed based on side-slip angle estimation. Then, the proposed technique uses a relationship between lateral error, heading error, and vehicle velocity to generate a suitable steering angle based on super twisting mode control. Second, a speed-planning algorithm is developed to control vehicle velocity. The algorithm uses a strategy for sharp curve identification; then it generates an adequate speed profile depending on the dynamic characteristics of these curves to ensure smooth motion of the vehicle through the whole trajectory. The obtained results from using a speed-planning algorithm with a super twisting controller prove the high performance of this control technique in terms of decreasing errors and respecting passenger comfort.

Abstract

A broad family of viruses called coronaviruses may infect people. The infection's symptoms are often relatively minor and resemble a normal cold. Since the coronavirus disease of 2019 (Covid-19) has never been observed in humans, anyone can contract it, and no one has an innate immunity to it. The detection of Covid-19 is now a critical task for medical practitioners. computed tomography (CT) scans can be considered as the best way to diagnose Covid-19. For patients with severe symptoms, imaging might help to assess the seriousness of the disease. Also, the CT scan can be helpful for determining a plan of care for a patient. This work focuses on classifying Covid-19 cases for healthy and infected by presenting a powerful scheme of recognizing CT scan images. In this study will be provided by proposing a model based on applying deep feature extractions with support vector machine (SVM). Big dataset of CT scan images is employed, it is available in the repository of GitHub and Kaggle. Remarkable result of 100% have been benchmarked as the highest evaluation after investigations. The proposed model can automatically detect between healthy and infected individuals.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is the elimination of interruptions of electrical energy produced by a multi-source production system, so we have assured the feed of DFIG rotor in a wind system by different energy sources (photovoltaic generator, battery group) and switchover between them by auxiliary contacts controlled by a supervisor via a power control algorithm. For the photovoltaic generator, a controller for tracking the maximum power point is designed using direct search approach perturb observe method. For the battery group, the installation of a number of the capacitor battery elements in series and in parallel will be kept the power necessary to supply the DFIG rotor. For the wind system, it contains the power generated by DFIG is controlled by sliding mode system. With regard to switching between electrical energy sources, our proposed system relies on an algorithm to compare the energies produced by each generator with the energy required to feed the DFIG rotor and the energies consumed in the system, where the energy source with high production energy and available is exploited to feed the system and charge the batteries. Simulations were performed to confirm the reliability and efficacy of the system proposed.

Abstract

There are many problems that restrict the work of the Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM), including the lack of using various windows of wavelengths, the large half-wave voltage, and the small optical confinement factor. In this paper, a mathematical model for MZM based on lithium niobate (LN) is designed to solve these problems. In this model, a wide window of optical wavelength from visible-to-infrared (632.8-to-1560 nm) was utilized. Moreover, it achieved a better modulation with lower attenuation and a lower dispersion by the window (1550-1560) nm. The other window of optical wavelength is about (632.8-to-634 nm), and (646-to-647 nm) which can be used for short-haul applications to reduce attenuation and dispersion. Furthermore, a small length of the arm, about 2-3 mm, was utilized to accomplish a large change of the refractive index and lower applied voltage of up to 250 V. The small operation half-wave voltage achieved about 1.2 V leading to better switching of the MZM. In addition, a large optical confinement factor of ≤1 unitless was obtained. Even better performance of MZM was attained by using a suitable length arm of MZM of about 2 mm, along with an electric field of about 175 V/mm and 233 V/mm using poling at 100 V.

Abstract

Image steganography and cryptography have been used widely due to the dramatic evolution of the internet of things (IoT) and the simplicity of capturing and transferring digital images. Pressing challenges in the context of a steganography system include security, imperceptibility, and capacity issues. In the existing schemes, fixing one issue has been indicated to affect the other and vice versa. Based on the above challenges, a new scheme has been proposed for the Crypt-steganography scheme. The proposed scheme consists of three main contributions. The first contribution is hybrid additive cryptography (HAC), which is related to encrypting secret messages before the embedding process to ensure security. The HAC depends on ElGamal elliptic curve cryptosystem (ECC) with cubic Bézier curve to achieve text confidentiality. The second contribution is a bit interchange method (BIGM), which is related to the embedding process and solves the image's imperceptibility. The third contribution is a new image partitioning method (IPM). The IPM contribution increases the randomization of selecting the embedding pixels. The IPM proposes a random pixel selection based on three iterations of the Hénon Map function used with IPM. Different parameters are used to evaluate the proposed scheme. Based on the findings, the proposed scheme gives evidence to overcome existing challenges.

Abstract

The assignment problem is a famous problem in combinatorial optimization where several objects (tasks) are assigned to different entities (workers) with the goal of minimizing the total assignment cost. In real life, this problem often arises in many practical applications with uncertain data. Hence, this data (the assignment cost) is usually presented as fuzzy numbers. In this paper, the assignment problem is considered with trapezoidal fuzzy parameters and solved using the novel Dhouib-Matrix-AP1 (DM-AP1) heuristic. In fact, this research work presents the first application of the DM-AP1 heuristic to the fuzzy assignment problem, and a step-by-step application of DM-AP1 is detailed for more clarity. DM-AP1 is composed of three simple steps and repeated only once in n iterations. Moreover, DM-AP1 is enhanced with two techniques: a ranking function to order the trapezoidal fuzzy numbers and the min descriptive statistical metric to navigate through the research space. DM-AP1 is developed under the Python programming language and generates a convivial assignment network diagram plan.

Abstract

A smart grid could generate and distribute electricity effectively economically, securely and sustainably. It offers customers more information and choice, including the export of energy to the grid, demand-side participation and energy efficiency. However, to implement a smart grid into the Iraqi power system, various challenges should be faced, especially concerns related to understanding the contents and features of this network compared with the traditional Iraqi network. As well as the challenges and risks of implementing the smart grid itself in the modern work environment, especially with the tremendous progress in communication technologies, which has brought serious problems to the operation of the network such as cyberattacks. Also, the traditional Iraqi network suffers from various problems, including the large deficit in the generated power-to-load demand ratio, which reaches about more than a third, and the great destruction that the network has been subjected to because of the wars that the country has been exposed to during the past three decades. In this study, a clear vision was presented to researchers and engineers who are interested in applying the smart grid in Iraq on this vital topic, which will greatly help in applying this essential matter to develop the work of the Iraqi power system and improve the efficiency and services it provides.
