Abstract

The food intake counting method showed a good significance that can lead to a successful weight loss by simply monitoring the food intake taken during eating. The device used in this project was Kinect Xbox One which used a depth camera to detect the motion of a person’s gesture and posture during food intake. Previous studies have shown that most of the methods used to count food intake device is worn device type. The recent trend is now going towards non-wearable devices due to the difficulty when wearing devices and it has high false alarm ratio. The proposed system gets data from the Kinect camera and monitors the gesture of the user while eating. Then, the gesture data is collected to be recognized and it will start counting the food intake taken by the user. The system recognizes the patterns of the food intake from the user by following the algorithm to analyze the gesture of the basic eating type and the system get an average accuracy of 96.2%. This system can help people who are trying to follow a proper way to avoid being overweight or having eating disorders by monitoring their meal intake and controlling their eating rate.

Abstract

Quick response (QR) code is a printed code of black and white squares that is able to store data without the use of any of the electronic devices. There are many existing researches on coloured QR code to increase the storage capacity but from time to time the storage capacity still need to be improved. This paper proposes the use ofcompress, multiplexing and multilayered techniques, as an integrated technique known as CoMM, to increase the storage of the existing QR code. The American Standard Code for Information Interchange (ASCII) text characters are used as an input and performance is measured by the number of characters that can be stored in a single black and white QR code version 40. The experiment metrics also include percentage of missing characters, number of produced QR code, and elapsed time to create the QR code. Simulation results indicate that the proposed algorithm stores 24 times more characters than the black and white QR code and 9 times more than other coloured QR code. Hence, this shows that the coloured QR code has the potential of becoming useful mini-data storage as it does not rely on internet connection.

Abstract

An inverted pendulum is a multivariable, unstable, nonlinear system that is used as a yardstick in control engineering laboratories to study, verify and confirm innovative control techniques. To implement a simple control algorithm, achieve upright stabilization and precise tracking control under external disturbances constitutes a serious challenge. Observer-based linear quadratic regulator (LQR) controller and linear matrix inequality (LMI) are proposed for the upright stabilization of the system. Simulation studies are performed using step input magnitude, and the results are analyzed. Time response specifications, integral square error (ISE), integral absolute error (IAE) and mean absolute error (MAE) were employed to investigate the performances of the proposed controllers. Based on the comparative analysis, the upright stabilization of the pendulum was achieved within the shortest possible time with both controllers however, the LMI controller exhibits better performances in both stabilization and robustness. Moreover, the LMI control scheme is effective and simple.

Abstract

The small and medium enterprise (SME) companies optimize performance using different automated systems to highlight the operations concerns. However, lack of efficient visualization in reporting results in slow feedbacks, difficulties in extracting root cause, and minimal corrective actions. To complicate matters, the data heterogeneity has intensely increased, and it is produced in a fast manner making it unmanageable if the traditional methods of analytics are applied. Hence, we propose the use of a dashboard that can summarize the operational events using real-time data based on the data visualization approach. This proposed solution summarizes the raw data, which allows the user to make informed decisions that can give a positive impact on business performance. An interactive intelligent dashboard for SME (iid-SME) is developed to tackle issues such as measurement of cases completed, the duration of time needed to solve a case, the individual performance of handling cases and other tasks as a proof of concept. From the result, the implementation of the iid-SME approach simplifies the conveyance of the message and helps the SME personnel to make decisions. With the positive feedback obtained, it is envisaged that such a solution can be further employed for SME improvement for better profit and decision making.

Abstract

Nowadays, Agile software development practices are being widely adapted all over the world. Scrum is one of the most known Agile models, it satisfies the business needs and put the main focus on the product. One common challenge for the development of customer-facing products is having a good user experience. This paper presents integrating Scrum development process with user experience design flow. In this study, papers relating to the topic of user experience (UX) process integration with Agile development process, how to measure it and how to improve it, from the year 2010 onwards are reviewed. This is to identify how organizations can integrate UX design flow and Scrum development and get the benefits of both. The conducted review identifies a number of limitations in the existing integrations efforts. A proposed process model to resolve these limitations is presented. Along with our experience in implementing it on an ongoing software development project. The results of applying this process, its impact on the project outcomes quality and the employees’ satisfaction with the process are discussed. The goal of this study is to aid organizations in integrating UX design into their development process.

Abstract

Roads are one of the main assets of a country where the network infrastructure offers economic and social benefits. It is understood that road maintenance would improve economic development and social benefits, and the poorly maintained road network would destruct mobility, raise accident rates, intensify isolation, poverty and vehicle operating costs. Unidentified road environment covers many aspects and based on that matter, it is important to improve the quality of inspection reports, whereby the efficiencies by mobile application shall be utilized. Developed system mobile apps have been found to be effective, versatile to use, as they can be used anywhere and at any time. The goal was therefore to recognize the types of defects, issues and deficiencies in current road maintenance practices and to develop a computerized highway maintenance program. The scope of the research will be limited to a case study at PLUS highway, connecting the north and south highway of peninsular Malaysia. The findings showed that road maintenance work is not adequately and effectively designed because it requires more time and includes a lot of paperwork. Due to this matter, the proposed mobile application would provide an invaluable added benefit to intelligent system of PLUS highway

Abstract

Urban farming is popularly accepted by communities living in cities as they are more health-conscious and to help support the high cost of living. Unfortunately, farming takes a considerable amount of time specially to monitor the plant’s growth. Therefore, smart farming using Internet of Things (IoT) should be adopted to realize urban farming. In this study, two IoT-based smart farming system designs for personal usages in a residential apartment were proposed and evaluated. As the design was meant for beginners, two utmost parameters for maintaining plant growth was evaluated, that are humidity and temperature. The humidity and temperature readings of design A using DHT 11 sensor and design B using DHT 22 sensor were recorded for 3 days and were compared against the actual humidity and temperature of the environment. After comparing the sum of absolute difference (SAD) of both designs, the implementation costs, and the consumption power, there is an inconclusive finding in terms of accuracy and costs. However, the basic design and cost of implementing a personal IoT-based smart farming system were proposed. The factors to be considered in constructing a personal smart farming system were also described.

Abstract

Over-compensation and under-compensation phenomena are two undesirable results in power system compensation. This will be not a good option in power system planning and operation. The non-optimal values of the compensating parameters subjected to a power system have contributed to these phenomena. Thus, a reliable optimization technique is mandatory to alleviate this issue. This paper presents a stochastic optimization technique used to fix the power loss control in a high demand power system due to the load increase, which causes the voltage decay problems leading to current increase and system loss increment. A new optimization technique termed as embedded differential evolutionary programming (EDEP) is proposed, which integrates the traditional differential evolution (DE) and evolutionary programming (EP). Consequently, EDEP was for solving optimizations problem in power system through the tap changer optimizations scheme. Results obtained from this study are significantly superior compared to the traditional EP with implementation on the IEEE 30-bus reliability test system (RTS) for the loss minimization scheme.

Abstract

Wire optimization has become one of the greatest challenges in today’s circuit design. This paper presents a method for wire optimization in circuit routing using an improved ant colony optimization with Steiner nodes (ACOSN) algorithm. Circuit delay and power dissipation are primarily affected by the length of the routed wire. Thus, the main goal of this proposed algorithm is to find the shortest route from one point to another using an algorithm that relies on the artificial behavior of ants. The algorithm is implemented in the JAVA programming language. The proposed ACOSN algorithm is compared with the conventional ant colony optimization (ACO) algorithm in terms of efficiency and routing performance when applied to three types of circuits: emitter-coupled logic, 741 output and a cascode amplifier. The performance of the proposed method is analyzed based on circuit information such as total wire routing, total number of nets, total wire reduction, terminals per net and total terminals. From the simulation analysis, it is shown that the proposed ACOSN algorithm gives the most benefit to complex circuits, where it successfully reduces the wire length by 21.52% for a cascode amplifier circuit, 14.49% for a 741 output circuit, and 10.43% for emitter-coupled logic circuit.

Abstract

In this paper, the development of a single-port microwave ring resonator (MRR) sensor based on a thermoplastic material, which is poly-lactic acid (PLA), is presented. The open-ended coaxial probe method was applied to identify the dielectric properties of PLA in terms of dielectric constant (2.25) and loss tangent (0.0001). The PLA substrate was fabricated using a hot press machine and with the same thickness (1.6 mm) as FR4. Hence, to consider the PLA as microwave substrate, microwave ring resonator (MRR) operating at 1.1 GHz resonance frequency was designed, simulated, and measured. Based on the observation, the return loss of MRR for the simulation and the measurement of the conventional design are -5.37 dB and -5.02 dB, respectively. The quality factor (Q-factor) for both are 122.22 and 183.33, respectively. Then, the enhanced coupling gap method was applied to improve the performance of MRR sensitivity in terms of return loss and Q-factor. It is observed that the return loss of the enhanced design for the simulation and the measurement are -26.67 dB and -20.23 dB, respectively, and the Q-factor are 122.22 and 200, respectively. Thus, the performance of the MRR based on different designs were compared in order to validate the sensor’s sensitivity and PLA can be recognized as a substrate material for RF and microwave applications.
