This article discusses the responses and thoughts of Tuan Guru or the traditionalist ulama in Lombok on the waqf innovation proposed by ACT (Aksi Cepat Tanggap), which is an Islamic international social and philantropic organization that operates in Lombok. The main motives of the various responses is the emergence of alternative narration and thought in Lombok that relates to the new categorization of waqf which is not existent in the islamic traditional jurisprudence. Some ulama who still stick with the opinion of Shafii school of law who do not recognize the productive waqf turn to welcome to this innovation because the proposal of ACT is based on charity and welfare of Muslims. There are three arguments proposed by traditional ulama in Lombok behind their acceptance of productive waqf, namely the argument of flexibility which prioritizes the preservation of traditional jurisprudene. Still, this does not erase all reservation of this innovation. the second is social arguments which emphasizes the role of waqf in improving the quality of Muslims life in Lombok. the third is the practical argument, in which the ACT program was not financially burdersome for the intstituion owned and run by the tuan guru of Lombok. This positive reception turns out to be the opinions of transnational Muslims in Lombok who in many instances oppose the thoughts and opinions of traditional Muslims as innovation, heresy and even infidelity. Thus, this productive waqf has become a meeting point of the two opposing groups amidst the numerous conflicting views.

The same culture and political system do not always give birth to twin political faces. This article finds that there are different policy formulations from the same cultural background and political system. Through a comparative study in two regencies, Sumenep and Pamekasan, in Madura, East Java, this article presents the results of qualitative research which shows that the existence of the same religious culture and the same political system gave birth to different Islamic political policies. There is a tendency to formalize Islam in one area (Pamekasan) and strengthen the substantive side of Islamic teachings in another area (Sumenep). Cultural similarities that are based on values, beliefs, and orientations as the dominant factors that influence political behavior, as well as the similarity of the system that places democratic mechanisms as a determinant factor for the birth of political output, have resulted in different policy formulations.

This article focuses on exploring factors behind the rising popularity of veiling during the 2000s. The surging fame of the women’s Muslim wear is stimulated by the changing trend within the political realm marked by the resurgence of political Islam. These alterations in the political milieu prompted corresponding adjustments in the government's stance towards Islam. Notably, there was a more accommodating approach reflected in policy reforms concerning religious matters. In addition, there are other factors that lead to the rising fame of veil among Indonesian Muslims including media, fashion as well as the celebrity factor. Media in all forms indeed play influential role in promoting the veil with songs, movies and magazines exposing the veil in a positive light. Interestingly, the songs and movies tend to use the encouragement rather obliging the veil; they ways used by the policy. Further usage by celebrity then lead to the extent where the veil becomes common. An interesting yet ironic fashion development turns out to be source for criticism as some of them deemed to be inappropriate. Still, the trend shows that veil has become common to the extent that the emergence of variety is inevitable.

Despite the apparent egalitarian principles and language of the Qur’an, the use of speech level in the Madurese translation’s dialogue verses appears to reinforce social stratification, which has existed for a long in society. The current article seeks to map the typology of relationships underlying the use of speech level, its determinant factors and implications. To achieve this, a critical discourse analysis was employed, with the main source being one version of the Qur’anic Madurese translation published by the Indonesian Ministry of Religious Affairs in 2018. Close reading of the verses to gather representative samples, coding, categorization mapping, analysis, and creative synthesis-making were all part of the analysis process. The findings suggest that there are two main types of relationship patterns: hierarchical and egalitarian. These patterns are influenced by factors such as social status, family connections, and the surrounding circumstances. The former focuses on the manifestation of cultural nuances in the translations of the verses, whereas the latter is primarily concerned with the impact on real-life social dynamics.

This study examines the Shia minority in Makassar, South Sulawesi, who was excluded by anti-Shia groups, and received support from the local government. The exclusion of Shia in Makassar is contrary to the constitution in Indonesia which guarantees freedom of religion for all religious people, including the Shia group. The purpose of this study is to explain that the act of exclusion against the Shia group in the public sphere is against the Constitution. From this study, there is an urgency to build religious inclusivity and equality in democratic public policies. This study uses a qualitative approach with primary data collection methods conducting in-depth interviews with several competent informants in Makassar.

Theology has been employing logic in order to justify faith with reasons not to mention bridging a gap between some different theological schools of thoughts. This article aims to examine Wirman’s claim of fallacies against Nasution’s theological thought. Thus, I will investigate two questions: (1) What sort of fallacies does Wirman charge against Nasution? (2) If there is no specification, then would it be fallacies at any rate? To address these questions, I strive to capture Wirman’s main premise for identifying those fallacies, exploring Avicenna’s ḍarūrī, and discussing thirteen Aristotelian fallacies. On the one hand, the conclusion of this investigation might topple Wirman’s accusation, and on the other hand it might look like a consolation for Nasution. Having said that, both Wirman and Nasution do reason only in the realm of Aristotelian logic instead of Avicenna’s account of necessity.

The existence of Quranic exegesis journalism is a relatively interesting phenomenon. As media content, the field of tafsir is likely to adapt to media routine practices, social systems, and social institution forces wherein the media is produced. In the period 1970-1980, Indonesia’s economic planning and political system had been deeply committed to developmentalist and modernist in orientation, and required social forces, including media and religious institutions, to promote this national goal. This study aims to explore the influence of journalistic practices in shaping the tafsir of the Quran in three magazines in Indonesia published from 1970 to 1980, namely Ashri Magazine, Panji Masyarakat, and Suara Muhammadiyah. The result of the study illustrates that the tafsir of the Quran within observed Islamic magazines adapted to the logic of journalism. Over the course of the period, Islamic magazines carried out Quranic exegesis journalism by defining issues and discourses of developmentalism and modernity as part of policy and public agendas in order to gain legitimacy from the Indonesian Muslim community. Additionally, this study argues that the journalism of tic Quranic interpretation is one of the study fields of the tafsir of the Quran in Indonesia which is relatively unexplored throughout the ages.

This paper delves into the distinctive significance and characteristics of Nawawi's linguistic thought within the Malay Muslim sphere, exploring their correlation with his broader Islamic paradigm. Utilizing the theoretical framework of knowledge production and authorship, the study reveals Nawawi's noteworthy contribution to Arabic linguistics in Indonesia. His comprehensive grasp of Islamic sciences infuses a unique discourse into the field, blending Arabic grammar intricacies with ethical and theological dimensions. Despite his profound expertise, Nawawi's impact on Indonesian Muslim society remains inadequately acknowledged. This oversight can be attributed to the prevailing curriculum in Indonesian pesantren, the influential presence of Arab-origin scholars, and restricted access to Nawawi's works. Unveiling this scholarly gap underscores the need for greater recognition of Nawawi's linguistic insights and their integration into the educational fabric of Islamic studies in Indonesia.

The article examines hate speech, particularly religious insults, and its implications in the case of Basuki Tjahaja Purnama or Ahok, the former Governor of Jakarta. It underscores the complexity of regulating cyberspace expressions, especially on social media, and calls for clear legal regulations to prevent social conflict. It highlights the real-world impact of online hate speech and the role of linguistic analysis in addressing it. The analysis is in three stages. The first is a text and context analysis using the Discourse-Historical Approach (DHA), examining Ahok's speech within historical and discursive contexts. The second focuses on Indonesia's legal frameworks governing hate speech. The third analyzes the court proceedings in Ahok's hate speech case, using both micro and macro linguistic approaches. The article concludes with two main points; the need to analyze the intent behind hate speech and recommends a dual-dimension linguistic analysis model in judicial processes related to hate speech cases, including religious insults. By embedding this component within the legal criteria, it becomes possible to achieve a more holistic and equitable assessment of hate speech cases. Overall, the article provides a nuanced analysis of hate speech, its real-life implications in Ahok's case, and the need for refined legal and judicial approaches to address hate speech.

Departing from the reservation on the existence of sharia in Indonesia, especially in the area of criminal law, which leaves no room for its contribution in Indonesian law, Ibrahim Hosen (1917-2001), an Indonesian Muslim jurist who once served as mufti of fatwa assembly in the Indonesian Council of Ulama (MUI), had spent his effort in boldly reinterpreting criminal verses of the Qur’an which for many are considered final and uninterpretable. This article is aimed at uncover and understand the methodological framework he used in reinterpreting criminal verses of the Qur’an and its contribution in the Indonesian criminal law. This study concludes that Hosen’s method is ta’aqquli (rational), revisiting the final and uninterpretable divine texts, and resorting to the concept of siyasa shar’iyya (policy compliant with shari’a). By doing so, it is feasible to implement any form of punishment as long as it realizes the goals and objectives of the law. Therefore, sharia will remain exist and it is not impossible that it will be integral part of the national law of Indonesia.
