Abstract

The foundations of the curriculum are the values, traditions, factors, and forces that influence the kind, quantity, and quality of experiences the school offers its learners. The curriculum has many influential forces which have engendered a tremendous impact upon the construction of the curriculum. In other words, philosophical foundations are those elements of philosophy which have a bearing on choices made with regard to the purposes and contents of the school. It is in the area of curriculum planning that philosophy in education reflects itself. The goals or objectives of any educational effort can only be implemented through a curriculum that translates them into subjects, units of instruction, themes, or topics that enter the classroom. They are to be reflected in the reading, the instruction, and the activities of the pupils under the guidance and direction of the teachers. For understanding the concept of philosophical foundations, there is a need to know the relationship between philosophy and education. In this work, I will be reviewing three philosophical foundations: idealism, naturalism, and pragmatism, and their relationship with education.

Abstract

This study aims at Comparatively Analysing Descartes’ and Spinoza’s Notions of Intuition. The rationalists employ logico-mathematico (logical and mathematical) model as the foundation of their epistemological pursuit, while the empiricists in opposition to the rationalists hold that knowledge is derived from sense experience. Because the rationalists are in unism in their argument against the empiricists and vice versa; it is important to note that there are variations in their approaches to those features they have in common. However, the rationalists among other things based their argument and judgement on intuition as a clear, certain and reliable strand of cognition. It is their conviction that only a living being can think, and so, they conceive intuition as an authentic and most certain route to knowledge. The variation in their arguments to uphold intuition as their common feature is what this work describes as epistemic sustainability. These scholars’ variegated position on one issue brings about new insight, creativity and productivity within the epistemic circle. It shows that epistemology is on-going, interesting and indeed, a continuous process. This study employed analytic, historical, textual and contextual methods of research.

Abstract

The nature and character of the state are central to the enterprise of Aristotle’s political philosophy. His conception of politics is derived from, and influenced by, his firm belief in political realism, in which case, his idea of the state and political institutions is anchored and hinged on the understanding of political realities or actualities. Aristotle argues that the state is natural and conceives of it as a logical extension of the family. From his own perspective, the state is a unit writ large. This paper, therefore, examines the place of happiness in Aristotle’s politics, showing its implications for politics and governance in contemporary Nigerian body-politics. It looks at why the state was set up in the first place and how it fits into the modern Nigerian search for good governance. It adopts a qualitative research method, which is basically descriptive. It also employs the method of textual analysis using the matrix of hermeneutics. It serves as a blueprint for public policy with a view to enhancing good governance in Nigeria. It posits, in conclusion, that governance and its institutional agencies are meaningful to the extent that they promote citizens’ happiness through the instrumentality of state power. It recommends an adaptation of Aristotle’s concept of happiness as a theoretical construct to guide fundamental objectives and directive principles of state policies in contemporary Nigeria. It also recommends that state power be used as an apparatus for enhancing the common good of all Nigerians.

Abstract

The current state of affairs in Nigeria is the reality of the state of nature portrayed by social contract philosophers. The Nigerian state has failed to provide security for lives and property. The basic necessities of life are luxuries in Nigeria. The legislators enact selfish laws while the judiciary is being emasculated by the mighty and the executive formulates and implements self-serving policies. The government has become of men rather than of laws. This is due to the failure of leadership, which is predicated on the quality of the rulers, most of whose level of education cannot afford them the acumen for statecraft. The matrices of the problem are: colonist influence; manipulations by the cult of the uneducated; and the political aloofness of educated Nigerians. Plato’s political ideology for an ideal state remains a classic reference for many generations after his death. In the instant case, his theme on the qualifications of the philosopher rulers (guardians) after rigorous educational training could serve as a paradigm for Nigeria. Therefore, the work recommends that the minimum educational qualifications for Nigerian rulers be reviewed upward to a university degree, which not only equates with the rigorous educational training for the guardians in Plato’s ideal state but also sufficient to broaden the horizons of the rulers to comprehend, analyse and reach decisions on complex issues. Thus, ss. 131 (d), 177 (c) of the CFRN 1999 (as amended) should be amended. Finally, educated citizens should be involved in the political affairs of Nigeria in order to fill the quality gap in the quality of rulers. Or else there would always be square pegs in round roles and the ship of state would wreck.

Abstract

The paper, titled "The Need for Christian-Muslim Dialogue in Nigeria," is motivated by the religious crises that exist between Christians and Muslims, resulting in the loss of lives and property worth billions of naira for decades. Most recently, the northern parts of the country have experienced so many crises between Christians and Muslims. Therefore, there is a call for dialogue between these religions. The method adopted to gather and analyze the data in this research is the quantitative method, which is basically works written by scholars found in books, journals, and internet sources, and the researchers’ experiences. The study, which is anchored on the Christian-Muslim dialogue in Nigeria, discovered the associated challenges to the peaceful co-existence of Christians. The paper discovered that Christian-Muslim dialogue will lead to peaceful co-existence, interreligious and social harmony, interfaith unity, and religious unification, etc. One of the recommendations made in this paper is that Christians and Muslims should not ignore Biblical and Quranic teachings that form the ethics of their religions. Secondly, Christian-Muslim dialogue is the bane of understanding and peaceful co-existence in Nigerian society.

Abstract

Any study of the spread of Christian churches in the Lower Cross River Region would indicate that there has been a gradual push towards Pentecostalism and Evangelical Christianity. A number of factors are responsible for this. The Reformation, which began in Germany between 1517 and 1600 and spread to the rest of the world, was a shift from traditional Christian doctrine and practices. Through deep study of the Bible, Luther advocated the end of a number of ancient Christian practices like penance on the basis that vital parts of scripture were being ignored. The information was hinged on the revelation from Habakkuk 2 vs. 4 that the just shall live by faith. It has, however, been observed that a number of churches that emerged from the reformation, like the Lutheran, Methodist, Apostolic, Presbyterian, and Assemblies of God, have all gravitated steeply towards traditional Catholic practices. This has led to a discourse in Christian circles, with the argument being that the old way could be better. Preachers of Pentecostalism have often been referred to as “Pente-rascals,” indicating that they have used the Pentecostal movement as an excuse for rascality. Evidence abounds to support this assertion, ranging from diversion of church funds, outright embezzlement of church funds, seduction by the clergy, false doctrine, and an opulent lifestyle. These practices have become common place in Pentecostal circles to the extent that a number of the uninformed see Christian ministry as a profession for lazy people who do not want to work. The flamboyant lifestyles of ministers of the gospel, their unguarded utterances, and tendency to manipulate and extort, which is in stark contrast to the gospel which Jesus preached, lends credence to this. Hence, this tends to support the argument that the push towards Pentecostalism is driven by a desire for freedom and liberty. These are the issues that this article will seek to address. The article will make use of primary and secondary sources.

Abstract

Creative literature is a site for possibilities and imagining of society through the portrayal of realities. This study through the application of feminism examines role reversal in Adichie’s The Visit. It further accounts for the emergence of the househusband which many creative writers and scholars have failed to account for. This study observes that sex and its function in African literature are related to gender and it is performative. This study claims that matriarchy is as oppressive as patriarchy and that economic privileges and social mobility are tools for the subjugation of sexes in marriage. This study concludes that for the first time, there is a deliberate depiction of the power of the woman.

Abstract

The evolution of Nigeria's environmental legal system is examined in this article. Like many other developing countries, Nigeria has had difficulty finding a balance between the expansion of its economy and the protection of its natural resources. Serious environmental problems, including the contaminating of groundwater in Lagos, the largest megacity in the nation, and the degradation of the marine environment in the Niger Delta by crude oil, reflect this dualism. The country's preoccupation with economic growth may be seen in the slow establishment of legal safeguards for natural resources, which has led to a despicable disrespect for the environment. This article claims that little progress has been achieved despite a growing knowledge of the need to safeguard natural resources. The significant and continued pollution of essential natural resources highlights this little progress. According to the inquiry, the administration that built these facilities is also one of the main offenders of environmental standards and laws. This often causes a system failure atmosphere in which nothing works and the environment suffers. Enforcing environmental standards has benefits such as increased employment opportunities, environmental protection, and environmental sustainability. Outdated laws, expensive environmental standards, weak institutional capacity, poor governance, understaffing, inadequate funding, vested interests, overlapping or conflicting legislation, ignorance, and a lack of the rule of law are a few of the challenges to effective compliance with environmental regulations.
