Abstract

Panji masks are one of the mask arts that originated in Indonesia and come in a variety of styles. One of the existing Panji mask styles is the Yogyakarta style, made of Pule wood and used in dance or theater performances. While in Japan, masks used in dance or theater performances, known as Noh masks, are made of cypress wood. Panji masks and Noh masks are long-standing cultural heritage arts. This study aims to identify and analyze the similarities and differences between the elements of art and the principles of art preserved in the Panji and Noh masks. A comparative qualitative method was used for the study. Library research, observation, interviews, documentation, and focused group discussions (FGD) were used to collect the data. Data processing and preparation, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing were all completed in stages. The results revealed similarities and differences between the Panji and Noh masks. Several principles are shared by Panji and Noh masks, including point elements, line shape, the principle of unity, balance, rhythm, proportion, and the principle of harmony. The line, field/shape element, color element, texture element, and emphasis principle are all different. These similarities and differences are due to a variety of factors, including the two countries’ geographical proximity (both on the Asian continent), as well as their history, customs, and culture.

Abstract

The relevance of the presented paper is conditioned upon the fact that today, the subject of the development of moral values in children with visual impairment through musical motifs of folklore is a very understudied issue. However, based on the statistics of the World Health Organisation for 2021, about 2.2 billion people worldwide have visual impairments. The purpose of this paper is to study the features of the psychological and pedagogical characteristics of children with visual impairments, their moral development, and the development of ways of spiritual and moral education through folk music. To achieve this purpose, the following methods were used: analysis, synthesis, comparison, induction, statistical analysis, and deduction. In particular, the method of statistical analysis of sources of American, Kazakh, and Russian researchers within the boundaries of the subject was used. The practical basis was the statistical data of the WHO company for 2021. The result of the study was a complete analysis of the statistics of children with visual impairment in the territory of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The study’s main conclusion is that modern methods of teaching children with visual impairment are based on the musical accompaniment of educational activities since the musical form allows the development of moral values. Visually impaired students are characterised by insufficient development of the visual-imaginative level of mental activity, which determines the uniqueness of specific conceptual thinking due to visual perception disorders and limited visual experience. The alienation of a child with visual impairments from others entails secrecy and lack of communication, which can be expressed in a large volume of complexes in the future. The applied value of this paper lies in the development of recommendations for improving the system of pedagogical education of children with visual impairment through folklore-applied developmental classes.

Abstract

Shadow theatre is an educational resource based on the use of silhouettes and the body as a means of communication. It allows the incorporation of music and sound effects that help students discover movement possibilities in the stage space. It also encourages collaborative work through the creation of groups. Therefore, the aim of this research is the incorporation of shadow theatre as a performance art for the promotion of uninhibited corporal expression and group cohesion. An action-research methodology is used to define a didactic proposal that incorporates shadow theatre in the field of music education at primary school. The learning situation is carried out in two public schools in the province of Malaga, with a sample of 213 students. The results indicate that shadow theatre effectively improved pupils’ body expression and group cohesion. Some students had initial difficulties, but thanks to the anonymity provided by this resource, fear of ridicule was reduced. It is proposed to compare this resource with theatre in order to define whether the method of incorporating the shadow is really effective.

For the different embodiments of exotic styles in musical compositions, composers have provided a number of examples of patterns and new directions, broadly summarizing it as the musical characteristics of a different region, whether apparent or not, that are reflected in a musical work. Bright Sheng is one of the leading Chinese-American whose significant works exhibits a strong exotic style using Western compositional technique. This article analyses Sheng’s Dance Capriccio composed in 2011, featuring Sherpa folk music. The analysis focuses on how Sherpa folk song and dance are reflected in Dance Capriccio, emphasizing how the tonal and rhythmic construction reflects the traditional folk song. It is also gathered that the gestural movement of Sherpa dances are reflected in this work. This paper will provide an insight into the infinite possibilities of modernist works through the integration and narration with exotic characteristics.

Abstract

This study intends to examine wayang kulit purwa performances [from Central Java] of the plays Réyog Ponorogo and Sang Batara Sambo “Prahara Suralaya,” created by Purbo Asmoro (2022). Both of these works are fascinating to study because in addition to the fact that they are allusions to topical conflicts [in Indonesia] presented in the form of social commentary, the structure and texture of these performances differ from the treatment of wayang purwa performances in general. This problem is studied based on the ethnoart paradigm, using the Interpretation (Sanggit) and Treatment (Garap) Theories and critical analysis. Research data was collected through literature studies, documentation studies, and interviews. The results of the study show that the social criticism revealed in lakon Réyog Ponorogo is blatant, while the social criticism in lakon Sang Batara Sambo “Prahara Suralaya” as a whole is equivocal, but in the closing scene it is blatant. In creating a ‘new’ lakon, the dalang must master various references—both written and spoken—which will later be used as hipogram texts, interpret various hypogram texts into a story, and translate them into lakon wayang. The artistic ability of the dalang greatly influences the quality of wayang performances, the ability of the dalang to choose the elements of pakeliran treatment to be highlighted in each scene, the dalang’s ability to organize the performance supporting team, and the ability of the dalang to read the situation of the audience.

Abstract

Barongan Blora is a traditional folk dance in Central Java that has existed since 1830. The passage of time brings up new social conceptions that influence the implementation of Barongan performances, particularly those relating to gender. This research aims to look into the gender roles of Barongan dancers and how they interact with social and cultural components of society. Gender interpretation aims to understand the social construction of men’s and women’s roles in society. These roles include male and female dancers whose motions express diverse traits while maintaining the performance’s significant values. This study employs a qualitative research design with case studies on various Barongan groups in Blora, Indonesia. In May 2023, data was gathered through interviews, observation, and documentation. The results suggest that cat motions dominate the Barongan dance steps, which are supported by strong, energetic, and nimble characters. On the other hand, each character’s movements are tailored to the roles and the dancers who portray them. Male dancers are cast as characters who appear strong and emphasize masculine attributes, such as Barongan, Gembong Amijoyo, Joko Lodro, Untup, and Nayantaka. Meanwhile, female dancers who play male characters, such as Barongan and Jathilan, must be agile, strong, and feminine. Gender distinctions in Barongan performance can be noticed in the movements created. Still, there are no substantial disparities in physical appearance between male and female dancers because both needed a physique corresponding to the characters being played. The Barongan performance also impacts society’s social and cultural features. Regarding social qualities, Barongan embodies the populist traits of the Blora people, which are based on humanist principles. In terms of culture, Barongan Blora has evolved to keep up with changing times, yet it remains and can be appreciated by all levels of society. Due to its uniqueness, Barongan’s preservation is still carried out in line with the times while maintaining cultural values and content in physical and non-physical forms.

Abstract

This research aims to seek clarity from a historical perspective to trace back the transmission and the remains of Gregorian chants in eastern Indonesia. This study also seeks clarity from a historical perspective to trace back the Indonesian situation prior to the arrival of the Portuguese. The Madjapahit Empire (1293-c1520) dominated historical events as the first attempts to unify the country. The research method employed in this study was a critical historical method to analyze treatises of Gregorian chants in eastern Indonesia, with the remains still being found today and known as the Holy Friday Procession in the islands of Flores. Under Gadjahmada’s hands, an ordinary-ranking officer who succeeded in becoming prime minister (Mahapatih) of the Madjapahit kingdom, the initial attempt at pan-Indonesia was successful, but the whole history of united Indonesia was dramatically declined by the death of Gadjahmada and since then united Indonesia was collapsed. When the Portuguese arrived in Indonesia, followed by the Dutch, British, and Japanese, there was no such single authority in Indonesia. The foreign powers trickily, exacerbated the situation and transformed themselves to strengthen their stronghold as occupiers. This important historical event was not known by the people of Indonesia in general and by the Indonesian historian in particular. Therefore, this research is more important to be done today than later.

Abstract

This research aims to understand the art discourse that is the foundation for developing modern fine arts in Surabaya. Art discourse represents the fundamental ideas behind the creation of artworks, which are developed and dialectically discussed within the context of the art ecosystem in Surabaya. The research design is based on an analytical, historical research method with a sociohistorical approach. The findings reveal the existence of continuity and change in art discourse from the Aksera generation (Academy of Fine Arts Surabaya) in the 1970s to the post-Aksera generations, namely the 1980s and 1990s generations. Three bases of art discourse emerged as the core expressions of aesthetics in modern fine arts in Surabaya during the 1970s to 1990s: 1. The discourse of nationalism (identity) underlies the art discourse of the Aksera generation; 2. The discourse of the market (commodification of art) becomes the main concern of the 1980s generation; 3. The social-political discourse serves as the platform for the art discourse of the 1990s generation. These three discourses demonstrate similarities and differences within the context of art discourse that evolved in modern fine arts in Indonesia.
