Elementary school students’ achievement in natural science in the academic year of 2015/2016 at Cluster V, Buleleng regency, Bali province was considerably low. An early observation also revealed low motivation, negative attitudes towards teachers, low self-esteem and low confidence in self-capability. Therefore, a breakthrough approach was urgently required to improve the students' performance in natural science learning. The current article aimed at investigating the effects of the (Nature of Science) NOS-oriented cooperative learning model with the Numbered Head Together (NHT) on the elementary school students’ achievement in natural science. The study was a quasi-experimental research adopting the post-test only control group design. The research conducted in elementary schools in Cluster V Buleleng sub-district, Buleleng regency, Bali, Indonesia. The research subject was 137 students in Grade 5 consisting of six classes from  5 elementary schools. The hypothesis was examined using an inferential statistics, the t-test. The results showed that there was a significant difference in the learning results of natural science between the students taught with the NOS-oriented cooperative learning model with the NHT type and those with the conventional learning model (t count = 7,048 >t table = 2,000). The students taught with the NOS-oriented constructive learning model with the NHT type achieved better than those with the conventional learning model. Therefore, it concluded that the NOS-oriented cooperative learning model with the NHT type gave positive effects on the fifth year students’ achievement in natural science learning.

A mental model is a student's perception or description of a concept. Chemistry learning requires deep understanding including three levels of representation; macroscopic, sub-microscopic, and symbolic. These three levels of representation are interconnected to form a meaningful understanding and students' mental model. The purpose of this study was to look at the mental models of students on acid and base topic taught using cognitive apprenticeship learning model. This research employed explanatory sequential mix method with 65 research subjects. The research instrument was in the form of a description test of acid-base concepts and an interview guideline for the students’ answers on the test. The results showed that students had good mental models (63.64%) on acid and base taught using cognitive apprenticeship learning model.

The objective of this study was to categorize and describe the behavior of chemistry education students' metacognitive skills who had a low chemical understanding (low ability) in solving problems. The findings would be the basis of data for the development of instructional design on chemistry topics by utilizing metacognitive skill aspects. The subject of this study was two first-year students of chemical education, academic year 2016/2017 that joined a basic chemistry course at the low-level ability in Universitas Tadulako. Two subjects were picked through networking using a valid test comprehension. The subjects were determined regarding the percentage of low ability which was 87% of 79 students. The profile data of metacognitive skill were obtained through an essay test, think aloud and interview. The earned data were reviewed, grouped, encoded, and examined to see its credibility employing the method and time triangulation. The research found that both students of chemistry education having a low-level of basic chemistry adopted planning skills in solving problems which were the problem identifying, goal determining, and strategy managing. However, both did not use monitoring and evaluating skills.

Inquiry-based science issues approach facilitates the development of scientific skills through research activities on surrounding science issues. The purpose of this research was to understand the influence of Inquiry-based science issues on practical skills of Junior High School students. This research employed quasi-experimental research method, equipped with pre-test, post-test non-equivalent control group design. The sample of sixty junior high school students in Yogyakarta was picked for this study. The instruments used were observation sheets on practical skills, practical skills test, and instructional learning sheets. The data collected were analyzed using N-Gain, percentage, and Analysis of Covariate (ANCOVA) at 0.05 significance level. The result revealed that Inquiry Science Issues was more effective in fostering students’ practical skills than the scientific approach. There was a significant effect of treatment on students’ practical skills while no interaction between approach and prior knowledge of students. Moreover, the data of practical skills through the observation sheets in the experimental class had higher percentage compared to the control class, 80.36%, and 70.61% respectively.

Solid state chemistry (SSC) concept is abstract yet makes it difficult for students. Considering students’ and scientist conception in designing a learning sequence, it is important to make scientific knowledge to be comprehensible for students. Model of Educational Reconstruction (MER) was adopted to define learning in order to develop students’ Conceptual Knowledge (CK) of the SSC concept. A sequence of learning activities was designed based on the MER. The purpose of this study was to examine the use of MER in developing students’ CK. One group pre- and post-test experimental design employed in this study. CK on SSC structured essay test consisting of 26 items were developed to measure students’ CK before and after their involvement in learning. Paired sample t-tests were employed and the results showed significant differences in the overall domain-knowledge (p < .001). In detail, students’ CK categorized into complete (C), incomplete (IC), misconception (M), incorrect (I), and no answer (NA). After the intervention, the number of students that answered correctly increased (57,4% complete and 21% incomplete). This study showed that MER was an effective learning design to develop students’ conceptual knowledge of chemistry concepts.

This purpose of this research was to analyze the influence of blended physics learning with e-scaffolding on the gas kinetic theory to the students’ scientific explanation. This research used quasi-experimentation with one group pretest-posttest design. The population of this research included the grade XI students of Natural Sciences in SMA Negeri 1 Bangkalan. The proposed hypothesis was that the blended physics learning with e-scaffolding affected the students’ scientific explanation. The research results indicated that the students’ scientific explanation ability significantly increased after they experienced blended physics learning with e-scaffolding. All aspects of scientific explanation, that was the claim, evidence, and reasoning improved significantly.

The aim of this study was to enhance K-10 students’ conceptions through Computer Simulations-Aided PDEODE*E (CS-PDEODE*E) on Newton’s Laws. The PDEODE*E is a worksheet consisting of seven stages, which are Predict (P), Discuss (D), Explain (E), Observe (O), Discuss (D), Explore (E*) and Explain (E). The computer simulations could support learning via PDEODE*E worksheet by presenting physics’ phenomena. The Newton’s Laws focused on forces and Newton’s First Law. The research method used the 4D (Define, Design, Develop and Disseminate). The research sample included 30 K-10 students (15 boys and 15 girls, with the average age of 16 years-old). The students’ conceptions were identified through a Four-Tier Newtonian Test (FTNT) as pre- and post-test. In the developing phase, we acquired the product of computer simulations and PDEODE*E worksheet. In the disseminating phase, the value of effect size was 0.85 in the "large effect" of classification and tcountttable, thus, CS-PDEODE*E was more effective than CS-POE. The decisions succumbed that the students’ conceptions could be enhanced via PDEODE*E based computer simulations.

This research intended to understand the effect of Isomorphic Physics (FORFIS) application to the analogical transfer and self-diagnosis skill of high school students. The use of Android applications in physics learning has given a considerable influence in improving the various abilities of learners. However, no one has measured the influence of the Android application on the analogical transfer and self-diagnosis skill of students, especially in physics subject. This research type was experimental research of pre-test post-test control group design. The subjects involved in this research were 1 physics teacher and 87 students of SMA Negeri 3 Kupang; 28 students in the experimental class I (G1), 35 students in the experimental class II (G2), and 24 students in the experimental class III (G3). The data obtained were analyzed using the ANOVA Mixed Design method in combination with General Linear Model. The results of the analysis show that the FORFIS application could improve 0.912 or 91.2% of the students’ analogical transfer and self-diagnosis skill. Therefore, the FORFIS application employed in physics learning had a great influence on the improvement of analogical transfer and self-diagnosis skill of high school students.
