Abstract

The Blind Side is a movie derived from Michael Lewis’ The Blind Side: Evolution of a Game novel. This movie tells about Michael Oher, a poor black teenager, who is cared for by the country because his mother is a drug addict. The practices of American Values (Paul, 2014; Datesman, Kearny, Crandall, & Kearny, 2005; Doran & Litrell, 2013) can be found through the characters of Michael Oher, Burt Cotton, Leigh Anne Tuohy, and S.J. Tuohy. The data found in this movie is strengthened by Boggs and Petrie (2008)’s movie studies. The findings indicate that not every character in Hancock’s The Blind Side practices American values. Equality seems to be Americans’ ‚homework‛ evidenced by the Oher’s struggle to be accepted as a part of Wingate Christian School. Oher’s hard work, however, is fruitful when he is chosen as a quarterback which then brings material wealth to him. All in all, Hancock’s The Blind Side is a paradoxical example of American values practiced by the society.

Abstract

Jugi Tapa saga is oral literature in Sawang District. North Aceh Regency, Aceh Province. This saga tells the story of the main character named Leubee Muda. Then, Leubee Muda became a heretic because he opposed his teacher named Teungku Lhok Drien. After his heresy, he was called Jugi Tapa, who became the title of this saga. One day, his teacher asked him to deliver a book to Teungku Jambo Haji. The teacher advised him not to read the book. However, Leubee Muda violated the mandate of his teacher, he read and practiced the entire contents of the book. Because of his intelligence, in a short time, he can master all the knowledge contained in the book. To perfect his magic, he must meditate and marry one hundred beautiful women, some of whom are king's wives and daughters of dignitaries. Jugi Tapa had married eighty-eight beautiful women. Amat Banta's mother, King Sadon's wife from Kuala Diwa, was his 99th wife. He needs one more woman as his hundredth wife as a condition of perfecting his power. Before obtaining a hundred women, he could not have sex with a woman, and he continued to meditate in the palace which he made with magic. His 99thwife was Putro Bunsu, the wife of King Sadon of the Kingdom of Kuala Diwa, having a son named Amat Banta. When Jugi Tapa brought his mother, Amat Banta was three days old. The Mother left a ring in the swing of her little son. Later that ring was the proof that he was her son she had left behind. Based on information from Bing Pho in Indonesian called Kepiting Uca (fiddler crab), Amat Banta looked for his mother to Blang Laka (in the current known as Bener Meriah Regency), where Jugi Tapa collected ninety-nine women, including Amat Banta's mother. With the help of Amat Banta ’s mother who had obtained the secret of Jugi Tapa's magic from Jugi Tapa's mouth, Amat Banta managed to kill Jugi Tapa. Several messages canbe taken from the story of Jugi Tapa, both as symbols, indexes, and icons. First, good deeds do not always get good replies. Therefore, every good work must be done sincerely so that we are not disappointed later on. Second, women should not be kept secret. Third, we cannot fight the teacher

Abstract

This paper explores the concept of patriarchy as an undesirable ideology that promotes the oppression of the weak and vulnerable in society by the strong and powerful in Isidore Okpewho’s The Last Duty. It is widely held that patriarchy promotes the domination of men over women and promotes an artificial hierarchy of class in which women become subordinates to their male gender. Yet, patriarchy does not only make subjugates of women. Depending on the dictates and expectations of a culture, men, like women, can equally be made subjugates of patriarchy if they are deemed unworthy of the title of a man. This usually happens when they do not measure up to the standard of societal expectations, particularly, within African cultural setting. Using the theory of Marxism, this paper argues that patriarchy not only succeeds in creating a society that operates on classism in which women are the subordinates; men too become victims. In addition, patriarchy inflicts deep psychological trauma on men and women who suffer its tenets. The conclusion is that men and women collectively fight patriarchy in order to achieve an egalitarian society where synergy can be harnessed for the betterment of all.

There are many synonymous words referring to drug, yet this paper displayed some of those words. The data were collected in a purposive sample method. The slang words taken as the data were restricted to those which were produced in 1990s and the 2000s. Three key words referring to drug were involved to sort the data: amphetamine or nervous stimulant, ecstasy, and cocaine. The slang words analyzed were focused on the forms of exocentric compounding. There are two main objectives presented in this paper: to figure out what slang words referring to drugs and describe the associative patterns of the words. The data then were analyzed in terms of their associative patterns adopting Mattielo’s theory (2008). The result shows that most of slang words referring to drug have appearance and effect patterns.
