Abstract

The article attempts to provide a real account of problems faced by learners of English in producing a piece of written discourse. So it deals with data of second language acquisition (SLA) not with theory of SLA. A micro study was conducted aiming at finding out what textuality elements are problematic to the learners.The findings, hopefully, may serve as a reflective measure in preparing and focusing on what to be thaught and emphasized in teaching writing courses. Key words: SLA, textuality, written discourse, grammatical cohesion, lexical cohesion.

Abstract

This study is aimed at describing what types of English Indonesian children can produce after they learn it from school and what linguistic features are used in their English (language). The corpus of the data is a stretch of approximately sixty-minute dialogue between 5 primary school children and their teacher. Functional approach proposed by Halliday is applied in conducting this study, therefore the term “English” in the title of this paper later on will be exclusively understood as ‘speech function’. Meanwhile, the phrase “young EFL (English as a Foreign Language) learners” in the following paper is used in several similar meanings, like children, young learners, primary school learners. Using Speech Function Network developed by Eggins and Slade (1997), then, it is found out that Indonesian young EFL-learners are able to produce speech functions (English) such those of produced by adult in quite complex linguistic features. Abstract

This study was intended to evaluate an existing writing curriculum in an English education program. The curriculum evaluation was conducted through a needs analysis, focusing on the needs of the students in the program. It is hoped that the result of the study would provide useful information for the program about writing curriculum they are implementing. There were four aspects of the curriculum that this study investigated: (1) the goals/objectives of the writing courses, (2) the approaches/methodology, (3) the classroom management, and (4) the class/program resources. More specifically, this study intended to know whether the course objectives/goals were appropriate with the needs of the students, whether the approaches/methodology were contextual and met the needs of the students, whether the classroom management was effective, and whether the class/program resources adequate to implement the goals/objectives. The study was categorized as a case study since it was a certain case happened in a certain context. The same case may not happen to other contexts that have different characteristics to the context of this study. The study employed qualitative/descriptive design by utilizing four methods of data collection: (1) document analysis, (2) classroom observations, (3) questionnaire, and 4) interview. The analysis of the data was conducted throughout the study; once a piece of data was gained, it was analyzed right away. The data was coded and categorized which then allowed for generating findings. There are four major findings of this study: (1) the goal/objectives of the writing courses were appropriate to the students’ needs; however, the courses did not accommodate the realization of the goals/objectives, (2) the approaches/methodology, to some degree, were not contextual and did not meet the needs of the students, (3) the classroom management, to some extent, was not effective, and (4) the class/program resources, for certain aspects, were adequate to implement the goals/objectives of the courses.   Key Words: curriculum, needs analysis, approach, method, classroom management

Abstract

A work of literature cannot be separated from its time and place, in which it is made. Therefore, to get a vivid understanding of a literary work, some certain techniques are needed. One of them is by breaking down the social and cultural layers of the work. It can also be applied in Dickens’ novel Great Expectations. By breaking down and analyzing its social and cultural layers, it can be found that the novel reflects the portrait of Industrial Revolution era and its consequences such as dissolution of family units, illness, poverty, mutual exploitation, human passions, expectations, and selfishness as well.   Keyword: Industrial Revolution, society, culture, zeitgeist, social and cultural layers

Abstract

The objective of this research is to find out whether or not the combination of discussion and discovery technique gives better effect to the students vocabulary mastery than that of vocabulary-drill discussion technique. Based on review of related theories, the proposed hypothesis of this research is as follows: The use of discovery-discussion technique gives a positive and significant effect in improving intermediate-two level students vocabulary mastery better than that of vocabulary-drill discussion one. The population of this research is all intermediate-two level students of Conversation Program at Global Lingua English course Tegal. For the purpose of this research, I randomly took eighteen out of fifty-five students as the research sample which were then grouped into two groups (with equal number of students in each group), the experimental group and the control group. I used vocabulary tests in the form of multiple choice with four options as the research instrument. The analysis of the data is done using t-test. And from the computation using SPSS, it shows that the result of t-test is 2.645 while t-table with degree of freedom (d.f) is 16 in the level of significance of 5% is 1.745.  Thus, Ha is accepted and Ho is rejected because t-ratio is higher than t-table ( 2.645 < 1.745). Based on the result of the above analysis, it can be inferred that the discovery-discussion technique does give better and more significant effect than the vocabulary-drill discussion one in improving intermediate – two students’ vocabulary mastery in a conversation class.   Key Words: Intermediate-two level, vocabulary mastery, Discovery-Discussion combination technique, conversation class

Abstract

This paper aims to describe the realization of language use, recognize the verbal interaction patterns in trading and socializing and identify the determinants of language use by the Javanese community with their non-Javanese speech-partners. The study refers to the sociolinguistic theory, based on the qualitative research by the author in 2004. Supporting data collected is daily conversation at the research location. It is found that the language use by the kiosk-owners and their workers as the members of Javanese traders’ community is closely related to their everyday social relations. The language used is Bahasa Indonesia, Javanese language and mixture of the both. The determinant factors of language use are divided into lingual and non-lingual factors. The lingual factors include Sala dialect, speech level, and Javanese language position as a mother tongue. The non-lingual factors include the multiculturalism relating to the speaker’s diversity of their ethnic backgrounds, realization of social relationships among the speakers, and cultural traditions. Abstract

The purpose of this writing is to express that friendship is more important than hostility. The reason of hostility is annoyance, emotion and lack of patience in facing problems. The effect of it is the destruction of friendship and the increase in annoyance among them. Feminist is a method that is used in this writing. The application of this method is to express that man and woman have the right to make their own decisions. Both of them will respect and understand. They will have responsibility for everything they have done. This method is also expressing that human have freedom in their life. In this novel, there are four women. They are Carmen, Bridget, Lena and Tibby. The four of them spend their summer holiday into different places. In their summer holiday, they have experienced incidents which can destroy friendship. Carmen hates her father, Lena hates Kostos, Bridget hates Eric and Tibby hates Bailey. Finally, they realize that annoyance between them can destroy their friendship. The writer used Feminist approach because the main characters wanted to destroy the patriarchy of man. They insist that man can respect woman’s opinion.   Key words: Friendship, Conflict, Respect

Abstract

In conceying something we need so many expressions called manners. There are four kinds of manners: (1) Assertive manners, (2) Cognitive manners, (3) Expressive manners, and (4) Directive manners. The objective of this study is to describe the manners in Minna no Nihongo I’ book. The technique used in this study is done by collecting data related to activities of manners. Based upon the data, it could be concluded that in conveying something in conversation one has to use imperative expression, permissive expression and pragmatic expression. Key word: manner
