Abstract

The purpose of this study is to identify government policy regimes or structural breaks as indicated by significant changes in debt to GDP ratio and to identify fiscal sustainability in Indonesia from 2000 to 2013. Using Fiscal Reaction Functions framework and Smooth Transition Regression, the study found two structural breaks following the three regimes. Foreign debt repayment dominates the government policy during Regime I. Fiscal consolidations and discipline such as reducing energy subsidies in 2002 and 2005, managing debt portfolio and increasing government revenues were dominant during Regime II. In Regime III, the government increases domestic debt, particularly to finance stimulus package. This study also found that the Indonesian fiscal is unsustainable during the period of study. Overall, the findings seem to suggest that managing government debt through fiscal consolidations, foreign debt repayment and debt portfolio management is not sufficient to achieve long-term fiscal sustainability.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to identify the determinants of foreign direct invest-ment (FDI) in OIC countries. In order to undertake it, we perform an econometric model based on panel data analysis for OIC countries, consisting of 16 Asian OIC countries and 18 African OIC for the 1980-2000 periods. Some estimated coefficients have the expected signs and are statically significant, such as market size and openness. The estimated negative sign on the variables exchange rate capturers the effect alters the price for acquiring assets in the OIC countries. In this case of OIC countries exchange rate also depict that the exchange rate regime is by no mean neutral to FDI. Furthermore, the variables consumption prices index (CPI) positive by effect FDI for African and all OIC countries. The government consumption of OIC countries was not significant suggesting that such factor does not play a role in at-tracting foreign investment. Finally, the more open economies in OIC countries were more attractive to foreign capital flows, as expected.Keyword: FDI, OIC, openness, panel data

Abstract

Following the process of deriving demand curve, which traces it from the consumer behavior to keep being in the optimum utility, one should also be able to form supply curve from producer behavior especially in getting maximum profit. But this does not work. In the case of output maximization, instead of supply curve, one will ends up with demand for inputs. While when using profit-maximum condition, MC = MR, one will find an ambiguous situation. This is so because only segment that is above average cost, AC, represents maximum profit; while the other segment represents losses. However, this concept is not strong. Even in the segment that is perceived as representing maximum profit, there is also doubtful situation, as Misanam (2007) shows it, where there is no guarantee that the condition will surely produces the maximum profit; This happens because the failure to insert the second condition that serves as sufficient condition. This paper is trying to extend the finding of Misanam (2007): maximum profit condition. From the new profit maximization condition this article proceed further to explore the existence of the authentic supply curve. The exploration introduces a new concept which is called “marginal net advantage” that serves as the incentive for producer to produce more. Based on the new concept, the exploration finds production choice curve that is a locus for maximum profit. Finally, the authentic supply curve is formed by selecting  the most viable production choice curve. The resulted supply curve has actually a convex curve in nature, instead of linear line.*****Key words: Marginal net advantage, production choice curve

Abstract

This paper investigates the effect of provincial corruption on the performance of local development bank, specifically to the profitability and credit quality. We use the data of 26 local development banks in 2012 and 2013. For the provincial corruption measurement we use “Public Institution Openness Index”. Results of this study are first, corruption significantly has a negative effect on the profitability of local development bank. Second, corruption doesn’t affect the credit quality of local development bank. These results are expected to enrich the within country corruption effect to the economic studies, particularly to the local development bank which is infrequently investigated.
