Abstract

Telecommunication systems for the new generation have greatly stimulated the demand for multi-band bandpass filters with compact dimensions, low insertion loss, robust, low cost and less complex design. In this paper, a compact multi-band bandpass filter, with the fractional bandwidth of 40% and 20% at resonant frequency 3.5 and 5.5 GHz respectively with the response of Chebyshev passband ripple of 0.1 dB is presented. This bandpass filter is suitable for WiMAX application. The design is based on the hairpin-line configuration and metamaterial of complementary split ring resonator structure. The hairpin-line is used for the compact structure design and easy to fabricate because it has open-circuited ends that require no grounding. While the complementary split ring resonator structure is easy to design and can provide multi-band without affecting of size and performance of the filter. The simulated results show the dual-band bandpass response with the insertion loss is 0 dB and high attenuation at stopband. The proposed filter provides a compact, low insertion loss, and less complex structure design that are promising candidates in order to meet the demands of the new generation of communication systems.

Abstract

The introduction of Net Energy Metering (NEM) scheme for electricity customers in Malaysia is seen as an improvement from the previous Feed-In Tariff (FIT). However, the new NEM scheme only benefited the large residential customers but not to medium and small residential customers. Due to electricity tariff blocks structure, the large customers can avoid paying expensive tariff and hence reducing their electricity bill. This is not the case for medium and small customers since they are already paying lower tariff blocks due to their lower electricity consumption. This issue will discourage most residential customers to install solar PV system in their home and affect the Malaysia’s renewable energy target. This paper proposed a NEM scheme that integrates Time of Use (TOU) electricity tariff to the scheme. The proposed NEM-TOU scheme will be simulated, tested and compared to the new NEM scheme by using practical small, medium and large residential customers’ data. The results show that the proposed TOU-NEM scheme able to overcome the weakness of the current scheme where all customers (large, medium and low) can benefited by installing solar PV system in their home.

Abstract

This work describes an open source tracking system that determines the location and speed of a vehicle in real-time. The system was inspired by the need to track tourist boats in UNESCO Kilim Karst Geoforest Park, Malaysia. Boats that travel too fast generate wakes that are suspected to cause ecological damage. In this work, geolocation information is provided by Arduino based transponders with Global Positioning System (GPS). Transponders periodically transmit location and speed data using LoRa through a gateway to a cloud server. On the server, open source software components implement a Geographical Information System (GIS) to manage the location and speed data for display and further analysis. The resulting prototype performed the required functions as expected.

Abstract

This paper describes the development of four different ultra-high frequency (UHF) radio frequency identification (RFID) tag antenna using polycarbonate material or transparent paper as the substrate and aluminum tape as the radiating element. The main advantage of the method is that the materials are easy to obtain where it can be found in any hardware stores or in any general online shop. Plus, the antennas are designed in such a way that a meander line is traced along the shape of a bowtie antenna so that the antenna would operate at UHF band. The results of all four of the tag antenna designs are discussed and compared using graph obtained from Computer Simulation Technology (CST) simulation results and measurement results obtained from a portable Vector Network Analyzer (VNA) for the reflection coefficient, S11, and measurement results taken from VNA in chamber room for the radiation pattern. Finally, the results show that the measured results are in agreement with the simulated result and that the UHF RFID tag antennas are able to operate at UHF RFID band.

Abstract

This paper presents new design of ZnO/CdS/CIGS/Mo nanocomposites thin film solar cell based on individual and multiple nanocomposites absorber layer. A theoretical analysis is presented for enhancing the efficiency and characterization of individual and multiple nanocomposites CdS/Cu (In, Ga) Se2 thin film solar cell. Moreover, this paper is achieving high efficiency with a thinner CIGS layer for reducing the direct materials usage and there by the materials costs by adding various metallic nanoparticles in CIGS absorber layer.
