Abstract

Microstrip patch antennas are increasingly gaining popularity for usage in portable wireless system applications due to their light weight, low profile structure, low cost of production and robust nature. The patch is generally made of a conducting material such as copper or gold and can take any possible shapes, but rectangular shapes are generally used to simplify analysis and performance prediction. Microstrip patch antenna radiates due to the fringing fields between the patch edge and ground plane. In this work, a frequency reconfigurable antenna with a BAR63-02V Positive-Intrinsic-Negative (PIN) diode is designed, simulated and fabricated. The antenna operates at 2.686GHz for Long-Term Evolution (LTE2500) and 5.164GHz for Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) applications. In the OFF state, the antenna operates at 5.302GHz, which is also suitable for WLAN application. The proposed antenna is fabricated on a FR-4 substrate with a relative dielectric constant, εr of 4.5, thickness, h of 1.6mm and loss tangent, tan δ of 0.019. The fabrication process is carried out at the Advanced Printed Circuit Board (PCB) Design Laboratory in UTHM.

Abstract

In this paper, a slotted is introduced at each of the radiating elements on the 1st iteration log periodic fractal Koch antenna (LPFKA). The antenna is designed to testify the appropriate performance at UHF Digital television which operates from 4.0 GHz to 1.0 GHz. The dimension of the conventional 0th iteration LPKFA is successfully reduced by 17% with the implementation of slotted. The results show a good agreement with a stable radiation pattern across the operating bandwidth, stable gain more than 5 dBi and reflection coefficient of below -10 dB over the desired frequency range.

Abstract

This paper describes the development of a Fractal printed Yagi-Uda antenna for Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) applications operating at 2.4 GHz frequency. In miniaturizing the dimensions of an antenna, fractal method is applied where the 1st iteration and 2nd iteration is implemented. The Computer Simulation Technology (CST) software is used as the platform to design and simulate the antenna. The substrate material used is the FR-4 board which has a dielectric constant of 5.4, the thickness of 1.6mm and tangent loss of 0.019. The antenna performance interm of the reflection coefficient, radiation pattern and gain are compared and analyzed. For the 1st iteration, 22.81% of reduction size has been achieved and 30.81% reduction of the antenna size for 2nd iteration has been achieved.

Abstract

This paper describes the development of four different ultra-high frequency (UHF) radio frequency identification (RFID) tag antenna using polycarbonate material or transparent paper as the substrate and aluminum tape as the radiating element. The main advantage of the method is that the materials are easy to obtain where it can be found in any hardware stores or in any general online shop. Plus, the antennas are designed in such a way that a meander line is traced along the shape of a bowtie antenna so that the antenna would operate at UHF band. The results of all four of the tag antenna designs are discussed and compared using graph obtained from Computer Simulation Technology (CST) simulation results and measurement results obtained from a portable Vector Network Analyzer (VNA) for the reflection coefficient, S11, and measurement results taken from VNA in chamber room for the radiation pattern. Finally, the results show that the measured results are in agreement with the simulated result and that the UHF RFID tag antennas are able to operate at UHF RFID band.

Abstract

A study on the compact array microstrip patch antenna for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication system based on the antenna arrangement is performed. The 2.45 GHz rectangular array are arranged in 45 degree slanted inward and outward for each other to reduce the mutual coupling effect between the patches. The antenna properties are analyzed and compact antenna design is determined based on the simulation results. The results show the antennas can very compact while maintaining low mutual coupling. The gain of the MIMO antenna is 11.3 dBi. The simulated and tested return losses, together with the radiation patterns, are presented and discussed.

Abstract

A design approach for a microstrip patch antenna to achieve the reconfigurable dual-band operation with a tunable device is presented in this work. The approach uses a BB833 varactor diode in the middle of a slotted patch antenna which which is able to produce dual-band resonant frequencies. The reconfigurable antenna is designed and simulated in CST Microwave Studio® software and is later, fabricated on a FR-4 substrate with a dielectric constant,  of 4.5, loss tangent, tan δ of 0.019 and thickness, h of 1.6 mm. By changing the DC voltages of the varactor diode, different capacitance values of the varactor diode are obtained which dictate the specific resonant frequencies. From the simulation results, the capacitance value of 0.5 pF with a bias voltage of 2.0 V is chosen as it produces the required dual-band resonant frequencies at 3.38 GHz and 5.37 GHz for desired applications in the m-WiMAX and WLAN bands.

Abstract

3-blade and 4-blade cloverleaf antennas operating at 2.45 GHz have been proposed. In order to achieve directional radiation pattern and high gain, reflector is incorporated to the proposed antennas. The proposed antennas have an average gain of 2.37 dBi while the proposed antennas with reflector have an average gain of 6.38 dBi. The dimension of the proposed antenna is compact enough to be mounted on an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). Simulated and measured results are used to demonstrate the performance of the antenna. The simulated and measured return losses, together with the simulated radiation patterns, are presented and compared.

Abstract

This paper describes the development of a long range monitoring system that integrates Cottonwood: UHF Long Distance RFID reader module with Raspberry Pi 3. When a UHF RFID tag is within the UHF RFID reader antenna’s range, the unique ID of the tag will be transferred to the Raspberry Pi 3 to be processed. Then, the data will be sent over to the database wirelessly to be managed, stored, and displayed. The paper also describes the measurement done to determine the most suitable thickness of PDMS material so that it could be incorporated as a wearable transponder. After the result is calculated and tabulated, it can be concluded that the most suitable thickness of PDMS material for the transponder is 8 mm.
