Abstract

Encroachments on Carita Research Forest area have exacerbated the degradation of land due to uncontrolled runoff, erosion and nutrient losses especially on the sloping land with high annual rainfall. To reduce the severity of the degradation the area should be rehabilitated by applying soil and water conservation techniques. The techniques used were the vegetative methods (culture), and a combination of it with mechanical/technical methods. The combination method is expected to be more effective in controlling runoff, erosion and nutrient losses. One important parameter is the efficiency of the distance of the vertical mulch channel, which affects the application cost. This study was aimed to determine the effect of different distances of vertical mulch channels on the plant growth and annual crop yield as well as its effectiveness in controlling runoff, erosion and nutrient losses. The research was conducted in Carita Research Forest from 2005 to 2008, using the randomized block design. Treatments applied were: vertical mulch with six and twelve meter distances of plots of khaya (Khaya anthotheca C.Dc.) and corn ( Zea mays L.) cropping system. Observations included height and diameter growth of khaya, runoff and erosion, and cost per ha. The results showed that six meter of vertical mulch was the most efficient distance. The height and diameter of khaya tree increased by 7% and 31% in six meter distance compared to the control. Moreover, runoff and erosion was reduced by 75% and 37%, and nutrient losses could be trimmed down by three to five times. In addition, six meters distance could also produce corn of 712 kg/ha/year, which was 73% greater than corn production without vertical mulch. On the other hand, the cropping system with six meter distance of vertical mulch required Rp 3,250,000,- per ha, which was Rp 250,000,- more expensive than that without vertical mulch.

Abstract

As part of multiple-population breeding scheme using sub-lining system, a composite seedling seed orchard of was established at Central Java, Indonesia. The orchard comprises a combination of the best 40 plus tree families selected from four sub-lines in the first-generation of Acacia mangium progeny trial. The design of orchard is randomized complete block laid-out as four line tree-plot of six replications with a spacing of 2 x 4 meter. Variation among sub-lines and families within sub-line, andgenetic parameters for height, dbh and volume were investigated at age of 24 months. The aim of this study was to investigate genetic variation for growth traits in a composite seedling seed orchard and todiscuss the implication for increasing genetic gain and seed production. In general, trees derived from two sub-lines of Papua New Guinea (PNG) provenance showed better growth than those from Far North Queensland, Australia (FNQ). Analysis of variance revealed significant differences among sublines and families within sub-line for height, dbh and volume. Variation of the traits among families within sub-line accounted for 1.1% to 5.0%, and trees within family 43.8% to 65.8%. Heritability varied from 0.044 to 0.201 for individual, 0.060 to 0.229 for within-family and 0.098 to 0.383 for family. Withinfamily selection promoted high genetic gain for all traits, ranging from 1.3% to 4.4%. In order to increase genetic gain and seed productivity, it is recommended that:(1) the best plus trees included in the orchard should be selected based on their progeny test, (2) the design of plot size should be single treeplot, (3) the final density of seed trees should be twice greater than the number of trees intended forseed collection, which is about 300 trees per hectare.

Abstract

This study was conducted to explore the role of forestry sector in the economic system of Gunungkidul district. The Location Quotient (LQ) Analysis, Income Multiplier Effect Value, and Klassen Typology Analysis were employed to analyze the role of the forestry sector. The data were regional income of Gunungkidul district and Yogyakarta Province from 1993 to 2008, including the economic crisis period from 1997 to 1998. The result showed that forestry sector was an important sector in economic development of Gunungkidul district. LQ analysis indicated that forestry became a basic sector since pre-economic crisis period until post-economic crisis (1993 - 2008). Prior to the economic crisis, forestry sector generated the highest income multiplier effect value. However, the value dropped during and after the economic crisis. The economic crisis had an influence on the development pattern classification of forestry sector. Before economic crisis, forestry sector was classified as a developed sector (quadrant I) with the growth and shared to GDRP in Gunungkidul were higher than that in Yogyakarta Province. Meanwhile, since the economic crisis, forestry sector fell into the lower class as a stagnant sector.

Abstract

Biological diversity can have significant contribution to reduce the build-up of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. The trees in a forest stand form an essential part in the functioning of the terrestrial biosphere, especially in the carbon cycle. Yet tree photosynthesis is far less studied than crop photosynthesis for several reasons: the large number of species; difficulty in measuring photosynthesis of entire trees or of forest stands. This research aims to assess the contribution of biological diversity in carbon sequestration by analyzing the physiological characteristics (photosynthesis, transpiration, stomatal conductance, leaf chlorophyll content) of species native to tropical highland forest ecosystem of Mount Halimun-Salak National Park. The results showed that there was a wide range of variation of CO2 assimilation rate between tree species. The overall CO2 absorption rate ranged 1.1913 - 31.3875 µmolm-2 s-1, the highest rate was reached by Lithocarpus sp. (pasang parengpeng) (31.3875 µmolm-2 s-1)followed by Litsea noronhae(huru lumlum) (21.5750 µmolm-2 s-1), Saurauia nudiflora (kilebo) (11.8175 µmolm-2 s-1), Vernonia arborea (hamirung) (6.7125 µmolm-2 s-1) and Litsea.sp. (huru bodas) (6.2725 µmolm2 s-1). The rate of CO assimilation was affected by incident radiation and thus the photon flux (Q leaf). Correlation between CO assimilation and Q leaf under certain environmental condition was considerably high. Incident radiation and Q leaf also affected stomatal conductance and thus rate of transpiration.

Abstract

Bamboo-based agroforestry is suitable for soils which are poor in nutrient. The characteristics of bamboo and the rapid closure of  its canopy improve soil cover, soil nutrient availability and soil moisture  content,  and  prevent  erosion  by reducing surface runoff. The  research was aimed at determining the factors that influenced surface runoff and the availability of soil organic matter (SOM) in the bamboo-based agroforestry in East Lombok. Research was done from March 2010 to March 2011 in Lenek Daya village, Aikmel sub-district, East Lombok district. The research plots were located on slopes of 0-15o, 30-45o, and 45-65o; with bamboo canopy closures of 0-25%, 25-50%, 50-75%, and over 75%. The research involving 12 plots, each in 4 x 12 m size. Measurements included surface runoff, bamboo canopy closure, weeds and bamboo leaves litter weight, rainfall depth and duration, dissolved sediment, and soil physical and chemical properties as well as SOM. Correlation and multiple linear regression tests were used in data analysis. The results of the regression tests showed a change in surface runoff which was influenced by changes in bamboo canopy closure, rain duration, rain intensity and soil sand fraction, each by -0.019, 0.418, 0.049 and -0.065 respectively. Rain duration was the highest influencing variable, whereas bamboo canopy closure significantly decreased surface runoff. Bamboo canopy closure had no correlation with the increase of SOM. But, the increase of SOM had correlation with the increase of  soil cation exchange capacity (CEC). The positive impact of  bamboo canopy closure  on  Regosol soil fertility in  bamboo-based  agroforestry land  was determined  by  land management intensity which could increase the availability of SOM and decrease phosphorus element loss due to leaching of nutrient.

Abstract

Family variation of capsule production and the seed viability in the Paliyan full-sib trial of Melaleuca cajuputi subsp. cajuputi, at Gunungkidul, Yogyakarta, were observed. The full-sib trial was designed as Incomplete Block Design, consisting of 39 families; six individual as tree plot and replicated in eight blocks. Height and diameter at breast height were assessed to identify the correlation between capsule category and growth performance. The capsule production was assessed visually to one of the capsule categories: “0” for none; “1” for light; “2” for medium and “3” for heavy. Results showed that each family of M. cajuputi sub sp. cajuputi equally contributed  to the seed production.   Progeny analysis showed that the seed productions were not strongly under genetic control (h2i) = 0.12. This study also found positive correlation between the flowering strength (the flower production levels) and the number of capsule (R2=0.279). However, there were no significant differences between the flowering levels and the viability of M. cajuputi sub sp. cajuputi. Mean seed viability was 31%,  there were no significantly differences of capsules production between trees having high flowering intensity and low flowering intensity. Low seed viability was assumed due to the unsynchronicity of flowering, leading to the low levels of outcrossing rate. Therefore, selection of families with synchronicity of flowering was recommended to establish a seed orchard.
