Abstract

This study examines the construction of women in Ida Fitri’s novel Paya Nie using Sara Mills’ critical discourse analysis, focusing on the subject-object positions of female characters and the author’s strategies for positioning the reader. The method employed was a qualitative description. The results indicate that women are represented as subjects who voice their experiences, yet also face powerlessness and resistance. The character Khadijah is shackled by patriarchy, whereas Ubiet evolves from victimhood into an empowered subject. The author engages the reader through a first-person perspective and conflicts that evoke empathy. It is concluded that women are not merely passive victims but also process agency within the discourse of power and gender.

Abstract

Abstract. This study aims to analyze Sitt Farjah’s inner conflict in Najīb Maḥfūẓ’s short story Hamsu an-Nujūm using Kurt Lewin’s Field Theory. Through a descriptive qualitative method, character behavior is analyzed using the formula B = f (P, E) to examine the interaction between personal (P) and environmental (E) variables. The findings indicate that the character is trapped in an avoidance-avoidance inner conflict resulting from the pressure of past stigma and judgmental communal surveillance. This condition creates high psychological tension and extreme restriction of the character’s life space. Ultimately, the character adopts fatalism as a primary defense mechanism to reduce this tension. This study demonstrates that individual identity within Al-Hara is heavily determined by the collective perception of the surrounding community.

Abstract

Abstract

This study investigates the use of non-finite clauses realizing X-COMP and X-ADJ functions in international news texts on natural disasters published by BBC News and Reuters. The study aims to compare the frequency of X-COMP and X-ADJ occurrences and to describe their syntactic constructions within the framework of Lexical Functional Grammar (LFG), focusing on the relationship between c-structure and f-structure. The data consist of four online news articles reporting floods and landslides in Sumatra in 2025, analyzed using a qualitative descriptive approach through close reading and note-taking techniques. The findings reveal that out of 50 identified non-finite clauses, X-ADJ occurs more frequently than X-COMP, with 32 and 18 instances respectively. This dominance of X-ADJ is consistently observed in both media sources, indicating that non-finite clauses are primarily employed as optional adjuncts to provide situational information such as purpose, manner, and conditions of events. Syntactically, X-COMP is realized as an open clausal complement subcategorized by the main predicate and involves subject control, whereas X-ADJ functions as an optional open adjunct that does not alter the core argument structure. These results suggest that the use of non-finite clauses in news discourse serves as a syntactic strategy to achieve information density and communicative efficiency in international disaster reporting.

Abstract

Teacher talk plays an important role not only in facilitating learning but also in supporting students emotionally and creating a comfortable learning environment. This study aimed to explore the categories of teacher talk commonly used by an English teacher in a secondary school and how these categories contribute to managing students’ feelings during classroom interaction. This study adopted a qualitative method and applies the FLINT (Foreign Language Interaction) system by Brown (2001) as the main theoretical framework to classify teacher talk types and to explain its role in classroom interaction. The data were collected from two English class sessions using video recorder and observation checklists. The results showed that asks questions, praises or encourages, and gives directions were the most frequently used categories of teacher talk. Among them, deals with feelings, and jokes were found to contribute significantly to students’ emotional management. These types of talk helped reduce anxiety, boost students’ confidence, and create a more engaging classroom atmosphere. In summary, teacher talk functions not only as a means of instruction but also as an emotional support tool that contributes to positive classroom interaction. The findings assist English teachers of secondary schools to be more aware of the affective impact of their talk in class. Integrating supportive and encouraging language, even in small amounts, can enhance classroom interaction and students’ emotional well-being.

Abstract

Abstract. Many contemporary stories reshape traditional hero myths to emphasize psychological growth and moral choice over physical triumph. This study examines how well Joseph Campbell’s monomyth explains the protagonist’s development in Makoto Shinkai’s novel Suzume. Using a qualitative method, Suzume Iwato’s untterances, interactions, and key events are analyzed through Campbell’s framework to map her journey onto the stages of Departure, Initiation, and Return. Findings indicate that Suzume progresses through most monomyth sub-stages but omits several conventional elements; refusal of the call, woman as temptress, and apotheosis. Her journey emphasizes internal change, trauma healing, moral responsibility, and emotional independence rather than external feats. The study concludes that Suzume represents a quieter, inward form of heroism and recommends that monomyth theory accommodate affective and ethical paths to transformation in contemporary narratives.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the types of illocutionary acts in Javanese acts found in sastra.org Website based on Searle’s (1969) classification and to explain their functions using Leech’s (1983) about theory of illocutionary functions. The data of this research consist of two selected posts published on sastra.org website, namely Sêrat Gugon Tuhon (2021) and Ngéngréngan Kasusastran Jawa (2024), which contain utterances reflecting Javanese cultural values, social etiquette, and moral teachings. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method with content analysis as the technique of data collection and analysis.  The findings reveal that the illocutionary acts found in the data are dominated by directive acts, which function to advise, warn, prohibit, and control behavior within the Javanese community. In terms of illocutionary functions, the data show the presence of competitive, collaborative, and conflictive functions, while no convivial function is found. This absence indicates that Javanese myths primarily serve as normative and regulative expressions rather than as expressions of social pleasure or politeness. Overall, the study demonstrates that illocutionary acts in Javanese myths play a significant role in transmitting cultural norms, moral values, and social discipline through language, contributing to a deeper understanding of the relationship between Pragmatics and Javanese cultural traditions.

Abstract

Abstract: The intersection of race, gender, and religion creates complex and often invisible forms of marginalization for women of color in Western societies, especially Muslim women who face overlapping systems of discrimination that cannot be understood through single-axis frameworks. This study aims to examine how these intersecting identities shape both marginalization and agency in Leila Aboulela’s Minaret (2005), with a focus on the protagonist Najwa’s transformation from a privileged Sudanese university student to a marginalized domestic worker in London. Using a qualitative descriptive approach rooted in naturalistic inquiry, the study employs close reading techniques to analyze character dialogues, narrations, and internal monologues, utilizing the qualitative method of Miles et al. (2014) three-step analytical process of data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. The analysis shows that Najwa’s identity as a Sudanese Muslim woman is deeply influenced by systemic intersections of racial hierarchies, gender roles, and religious marginalization that create unique forms of discrimination beyond individual identities. The findings show how her privilege in Sudan loses meaning within London’s racialized labor markets, pushing her into exploitative domestic work that reflects Collins’ “Mammy” controlling image while also limiting her agency through structural barriers. Despite systemic restrictions, Najwa shows limited agency through religious practices and subtle acts of resistance, though these are heavily constrained by intersecting systems that use her multiple identities to justify exploitation while erasing her complexity and humanity.
