Abstract

The aims of the research were to find whether or not (1) there  was any significant difference in reading comprehension between the students who had positive attitude taught using TAPPS technique and conventional, (2) there was any significant difference in reading comprehension between the students who had positive attitude taught using conventional and negative attitude taught using TAPPS technique, (3) there was any significant different in reading comprehension between the students who had negative attitude taught using TAPPS technique and conventional, (4) there was any significant different in reading comprehension between the students who had negative attitude taught using conventional and positive attitude taught using TAPPS technique,(5) there was any significant interaction between TAPPS technique and reading attitude in increasing students’ reading comprehension. The population of this research was the eighth class of students SMP Negeri Air Satan in 2014-2015 academic years. From the population 90 students were taken as his research sample 30 students represent an experimental class and the 30 students as a control class. The samples were taken using two stage random sampling. In carrying out the research, the writer used factorial group design, the writer distributed the pretest, posttest, and questionnaire on students reading attitude (positive and negative) in collecting the data. In analyzing the data, t-test and two way ANOVA were used. There was any significant different on positive attitude students in experimental class and positive attitude students in control class. There was any significant difference on negative attitude students in experimental class and positive attitude students in control class. There was any significant different on negative attitude students in experimental class and negative attitude students in control class. There was any significant difference on positive attitude students in experimental class and negative attitude students in control class. The last, there was no any significant interaction between the students’ reading attitude and technique used. Key words:  Influence, TAPPS technique, Reading Attitude, and Reading                      Comprehension.

Abstract

Abstract Extensive reading is reading in large numbers so that the reader can understand the material being read as well as a whole. Extensive Reading done with the following steps: a) survey the title page, preface, table of contents, and index; b) setting skim through the pages of text quickly. To find the main idea of the text pages or; c) glancing each page of text just to find a particular word or information desired. Intensive reading can be done in the manner of reading short texts with guidance and in a relaxed situation. The purpose of intensive reading is to help students acquire the detailed meaning of the text, to develop the skills of reading, such as identifying main ideas and recognizing text connectors and to increase vocabulary and grammar knowledge is as follows. 1) improving language learning in areas such as spelling, vocabulary, grammar, and structure of the text; 2) improving knowledge skills; 3) improving reading and writing skills; 4) greater enjoyment of reading; 5) a more positive attitude towards reading; 6) a higher likelihood of developing the habit of reading. Keywords: extensive, intensive, reading

Abstract

Reading means understanding a written text to get the information and knowledge as efficiently as possible. The foundational skills of reading are: word reading, fluency, vocabulary, and word knowledge. Many students of the fifth semester still get low in reading score. There are many factors that caused the low score of the students, such as: they do not have suitable method in learning English, they are lazy to repeat the material at home, and they have low motivation, and so on. Based on the problem, the researcher wants to investigate the correlation among learning strategies, emotional intelligence, and reading achievement. Furthermore, the population of the research is the fifth semester students of English Education Department of STKIP Muhammadiyah Kotabumi consisting of 85 students, from the population, 50 students were represented as the sample which was taken through simple random sampling technique. The instruments to collect the data used questionnaires for learning strategies and emotional intelligence and test for reading achievement. While to analyze the data, it was used multiple correlation in SPSS 13 Program for Windows. The data analysis shows that Ryx1x2 = 0.391  at the significant level of 0,05. And for the criteria of significant test is gotten Fcount (4.230) > Ftable (0,05) (4,01). The result of hypothesis test showed that there is significant correlation among learning strategies, emotional intelligence, and reading achievement.  Therefore, it is suggested that English teachers should teach by giving appropriate strategy and give the good example of emotional intelligence in teaching reading skill. Key words:  Learning Strategies, Emotional Intelligence, and Reading Achievement.

Abstract

AbstractThis study was conducted to find out (1) whether or not it is effective empowering students’ listening comprehension through Internet Content-Based Activities. The samples of this study were the first  semester students of English Department State Polytehcnic of Sriwijaya Palembang in the academic year of 2013-3014. The primary data were collected by means of test. The results show that  there was a statistically significant difference in listening comprehension achievement of the students pretest-posttest after being taught through Internet Content-Based Activities. It was found out that the average score of the students’ pre- test was 65.33 while in the post test was 74.19. the result of t-test calculation shows  that the value of t was 6.472. Where the value of the t-table 2.086  at the significance level of 0,05% with df 20. Thus, t-obtained was higher than t-table. It can be concluded that Internet Content-Based Activities was effective empowering the first semester, English department  students’ listening comprehension at State Polytechnic of Sriwijaya Palembang. Key Words : Internet Content-Based Activities, Listening Comprehension

Abstract

Abstract This research entititled “Teaching Writing Narrative Text Through Story Map to the Eighth Grade Students of State Junior High School 2 of Palembang”. The Formulation of the Problems,      “Is it effective to teach writing narrative text through story map to the eighth grade students of State Junior High School 2 of Palembang?” The objective of the research was to find out whether or not it is effective to teach writing narrative text through story map to the eighth grade students of State Junior High School 2 of Palembang.  The method  used  is  pre – experimental method with the one group pre-test and post-test design. According to Fraenkel and Wallen (2012:236), a single group is measured and observed not only after exposed to a treatment of some short but also before. The population of this research is the eighth grade students of State Junior High School 2 of Palembang consisted of 231 students. A convenience sample is a group of individuals who (conveniently) are available for study for VIII.4 consisted 37 students. Finally, from this research it is found that the pre-test was 77.22 and post test was 79.9. Based on the calculation of the match t-test was higher than the critical of t value the data showed that the calculation of the match t-test was 6.56. It means that the null hypothesis was rejected and consequently alternative hypothesis was accepted. In other words teaching writing narrative text through story map to the eighth grade students of state junior high school 2 of Palembang was effective to increase the students’ writing. Keywords: teaching, writing, story map

Abstract

As writing belongs to one of the four English skills to be mastered by students and it is a very important component of communication, it is important to investigate the relationship of some affective aspects with students’ achievement in writing. Therefore, it is hopefully that English teachers or lecturers will be able to find the best solution for their students’ difficulties in learning writing. It was a correlational study consisting of three variables namely self-esteem (X1), writing motivation (X2), and writing achievement (Y). This study was going to investigate and answer four questions related to the correlation of the variables by administering questionnaires and a writing test to 50 out of 81 students of the fifth semester of STKIP Muhammadiyah Kotabumi-Lampung Utara. The questionnaires were used to collect the data of students’ self-esteem and writing motivation, while the writing test was conducted to measure the students’ writing achievement by asking the students to write a simple expository paragraph in accordance with the topics provided. The data analysis  resulted the H0 hypotheses were all rejected and Ha hypotheses were all accepted. To sum up, there is significant correlation among self-esteem, writing motivation and writing achievement of the fifth semester students of STKIP Muhammadiyah Kotabumi-Lampung Utara. Key Words: Self-Esteem, Writing Motivation, Writing Achievement

Abstract

AbstractThis study was aimed at finding out (1) whether or not there was a correlation between students’ self-concept and reading attitude? (2) whether or not there was a correlation between students’ reading attitude and reading comprehension achievement? (3) whether or not there was contribution of students’ self-concept to reading attitude and reading comprehension achievement? The population of this study was the Sixth Semester Of English Study Program 193 students. From population, 60 students were represented as the samples. The samples were taken using Stratified Random Sampling. The data distribution were considered normal. It was proved by statistic calculation of normality test which shows that p-output (0.034, 0,200, and 0,040). Then based on the calculation of Levene Statistic, it was found that p-value is higher than α (0.05). Based on the result of statistic calculation using correlation. It was found the significant value (r) between students’ self-concept and reading attitude was 0.122 which more than α (0.05). It means that H1 was received. While the significant value (r) between students’ reading attitude and reading comprehension 0.290 which also more than α (0.05). It means that H2 was accepted. It was also found contribution of self-concept to reading attitude (r2) was 15 %, while contribution of reading attitude to reading comprehension achievement was 84 %. Abstract

Abstract: This study was aimed at whether link system significantly effective in teaching speaking to the eleventh grade students of SMA Yadika Baturaja. This study used pre-experimental method by taking one class as the sample of the study. The population of this study was all of the eleventh grade students of SMA Yadika Baturaja with the total number were 212 students in academic year 2013/2014 and the sample was 35 students in one class which are chosen by using purposive sampling. The data obtained through the oral test and was analyzed by using paired sample t-test of SPSS 16 program. The result of the study showed that the average students’ scores in post-test (62.16) was higher than the average students’ scores in pre-test(55.39). The result of the data analyzed through SPSS 16 program was 5.477 to tobtained  and 2. 032 to ttable with the significance level (α = 0,05) and degree of freedom (df = 35 – 1 = 34). This study showed that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected which means it was significantly effective to teach speaking by using link system to the eleventh grade students of SMA Yadika Baturaja. Key words: Effectiveness, Mnemonic, Link System

Abstract

Abstract           This study was conducted to find out whether or not it is effective teaching reading comprehension achievement through Request Procedure to the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri Olahraga Sriwijaya Palembang. The samples of this study were the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri Olahraga Sriwijaya Palembang in the academic year of 2013-3014. The primary data were collected by means of test and it was analyzed by match t-test. The results show that the students’ reading comprehension achievement improved after treatment. The mean score of the students’ pre test was 65.35 and post test was 77.39. The analysis of t-test calculation shows that the value of t was 10.684. Then the value of the t-table was 2.086 at the significance level of 0,05% with df  of 22.  The findings point that t-obtained was higher than t-table. It implies that Request Procedure was effective teaching reading comprehension to tenth grade students of SMA Olhraga Negeri Sriwijaya Palembang Key words: Reading comprehension, Request Procedure
