Abstract

Keywords: The Godfather, Social Norms and Values, Italian-American Mafia,Sociological ApproachSociety refers to a group of people who share common area, culture and behavior patterns. Society is a mixture of subcultures in which different societies from different parts of the world preserve their original cultures. The Godfather describes how Vito Corleone as the leader of Corleone family tries to elevate the importance of Social Norms and Values of Italian-American Mafia which are based on the traditional Italian Mafia to the members of his Mafia family.The application of Sociological approach used in this study is to figure out what are the social norms and values of Italian-American Mafia community and how important they are to the members of Mafia. Furthermore, it is used to explore the structure of Italian-American Mafia organization. The data are collected from the narration, characterization, and the dialogue of the characters. The procedure of analysis comprises of collecting data, interpreting and analyzing related object of the study in the story, and drawing the conclusion.The result of the study shows the importance of Social Norms and Values of Italian-American Mafia and the consequences for those who do not obey the rules of this community. Various punishments as a result for a member who fails to obey the rules of Mafia community are clearly described in the novel. Hopefully, a study about social norms and values can be used to help other researchers who want to analyze the sequel novel of The Godfather which is entitled The Sicilian by using the same perspective.

Abstract

Keywords: Flouting maxim, Character, Monster University The study deals with the flouting of maxims in the cartoon movie with title ‘Monster University’. There are two problems of the study, namely: (1) What maxims are flouted by the character in Monster University movie, and (2) What is the implied meaning of flouted maxim in the character’s utterance in Monster University. The objectives are to find out the utterances flouted by the characters in Monster University movie and to describe the implied meaning of flouted maxim in the character’s utterance in Monster University.The writer used two theories to conduct the analysis. First, Grice’s theory for main theory and Cutting’s theory for supporting theory for analysis. Qualitative approach in data analysis containing the flouting of maxims. The data were in the form of utterancess was used by the characters in Monster University movie.Results of this study showed there were 39 utterances which flouted the maxims, 12 utterances which flouted maxim of quantity, 8 utterances which flouted maxim of quality, 12 utterances which flouted maxim of relevance, and 7 utterances which flouted maxim of manner. The character flouted maxim of quantity and relevance the most, because they like to give too little or too short information, so if they give short information sometime they make no relation between their utterances. The reason they break the rules is in order to make natural utterances and also to supporttheir situation.The writer suggests further researchers to seek different subject of the research, such as advertisement, a comic, a song lyric and in any kinds of media to make variation in analysis. The writer also suggests that the next researcher can use more recent theory to make deeper analysis.

Abstract

Kata Kunci: film, pengaruh omoiyari, perubahan sikap, Taiyou no Uta, tokoh. Skripsi ini membahas tentang perubahan sikap yang dialami tokoh Kaoru Amane setelah mendapat tindakan-tindakan omoiyari dari orang-orang di sekitarnya. Omoiyari yang berasal dari kata omoi dan yaru menjelaskan bahwa omoiyari merupakan bentuk mengirimkan sesuatu terhadap orang lain. Omoiyari yang terdiri dari doa, dukungan, bantuan dan semangat pada penelitian ini akan menjadi alasan perubahan sikap dari tokoh Kaoru Amane setelah menerima omoiyari dari orang-orang di sekitarnya.  Topik pada penelitian ini membahas tentang omoiyari yang merupakan salah satu bentuk moral orang Jepang dalam kehidupan bermasyarakat. Kehidupan tokoh Kaoru Amane menjadi berbeda setelah bertemu seseorang yang sangat peduli terhadap Kaoru. Kehidupan yang berbeda membawa beberapa perubahan sikap. Perubahan sikap yang terjadi akan diteliti oleh penulis menggunakan konsep omoiyari yang dipadukan oleh psikologi sosial. Psikologi sosial yang terfokus pada sikap menolong dan empati menjelaskan lebih lanjut tentang 4 unsur yang terdapat dalam omoiyari. Penulis menggunakan psikologi sosial David Myers (2012) sebagai pendukung penjelasan omoiyari dalam mengkaji adegan-adegan di dalam dilm Taiyou no Uta.Hasil penelitian menunjukkan terdapat tindakan-tindakan omoiyari yang diterima oleh tokoh Kaoru Amane. Omoiyari yang diterima justru membuat hidup tokoh Kaoru menjadi lebih baik. Adanya kesempatan untuk menjadi lebih baik dalam diri Kaoru menjadikan sikap lebih baik muncul pada diri tokoh Kaoru. Beberapa sikap ini didapatkan setelah berbagai bentuk omoiyari diterima dari orang-orang terdekat tokoh Kaoru. Omoiyari yang diterima oleh tokoh Kaoru ternyata didapatkan dari banyak orang, baik kenal maupun tidak kenal. Faktorfaktor yang mempengaruhiseseorang melakukan omoiyari ternyata berdasar pada altruisme dan empati. Kendati demikian, perubahan akan terjadi jika tokoh Kaoru juga memiliki kemauan untuk berubah menjadi lebih baik.

Abstract

Key word: Politeness Strategies, Contexts, Javanese, Javanese people Javanese has differences of speaking local language refer to dialect. There are three levels speech in Javanese such as: ngoko, madya, and krama. This study has two objectives, first is to identify the politeness strategies of Javanese used by Javanese people who are living in Malang when they are welcoming guests. Second one is to identify the contexts of politeness strategies of Javanese used by Javanese people who living in Malang when they are welcoming their guests, especially their Javanese utterances when they are giving a seat to the addressee. In this study, research method which is used is qualitative. Type of study is a case study to get information deeply used the subject’s observation as mutiple methods to gather data. The result from the observation shows that 12 utterences from Javanese people have different politeness when they are  welcoming their guests. The data were taken from the different age, sex, marital status, education background, occupation and utterance from Javanese dialect proposed by Kartomihadjo (1979) which used in welcoming their guest: age: 18-40 years, sex: male or female, education background: S1, occupation: entrepreneur, student, employee, utterance (Javanese) mangga pinarak (krama), monggo lenggah (madya), lungguho (ngoko) and status relationship between addreseer and addressee proposed by Holmes (1995) with categories : senior-junior, junior-senior, or friend also have more effect of politeness strategies used by addreseer to get the limitation of politeness in language use. It can be concluded, there are 7 subjects utterances used Ngoko level but 1 subject utterance used negative politeness, 3 subjects utterances used madya, 2 subjects utterances used Krama.The writer wants to give a suggestion for both the students of Study Program of English and the future researchers to analyze other politeness strategies of other languages which are almost extinct. They can use a research approach which involvepoliteness strategies in other languages to understand and cultivate sense of languagevarieties in Indonesia.

Abstract

Keywords: Terms of Address, Javanese Language, Darul ‘Ulum Islamic boarding school. Javanese language is one of various languages in Indonesia which is spoken by the people who lived in the province of Central Java, Yogyakarta and East Java. The Javanese language speech levels were divided into three Ngoko, Krama Madya, and Krama Inggil. There are some rules which are considered to be polite in Javanese communication, included the use of address terms. The writer conducts a research about address terms used by Javanese santri, case study in Darul ‘Ulum Islamic boarding school, Jombang by using Kridalaksana’s and Sadtono’s theory. This research focuses on two problems: (1) What Javanese terms of address are used by Javanese santri (2) What are the probable factors affecting the use of address terms.This research uses qualitative approach to describe the address terms phenomenon and answer the problems of study. The data of this research are transcription of direct interview and the daily conversation produced by male and female Javanese santri. Furthermore, the type of this research is case study because the writer considers in making the deep investigation about the use of address terms in Darul ‘Ulum Islamic boarding school.This research reveals that there are twenty two terms of address which are divided into four kinds; three terms in second personal pronouns categories such as sampeyan and panjenengan, seven terms in kinship categories such as bapak and ibu, eight terms in title and rank categories such as kyai and nyai and four terms in other categories such as santriwan and santriwati. In addition, the use of address terms influenced by several factors such as age, kin/ blood relationship, rank and title profession, and also social status.The writer hopes that this research can contribute a better and deeper understanding especially the address terms in Javanese society. She suggests for the next researchers who want to conduct a similar researchin sociolinguistics, especially the address terms phenomenon to use another theory to make their research more different and find the unique of address terms in different areas or cases.

Abstract

Keywords: Language Learning Strategies, English Achievement, the StrategyInventory of Language Learning (SILL) Questionnaire, Heavy EquipmentDepartment. In learning English, learners often face many difficulties such as pronunciation, vocabulary, etc. So, they need learning strategies to solve them in order to improve their English skills. In Indonesian educational system, English is one of the requirements for graduation in high schools. The writer used Oxford’s (1990) theory in analyzing language learning strategies. Therefore, this study is aimed to investigate the application of language learning strategies and the relationship between language learning strategies and English achievement of 11th grade students of SMKN 1 Singosari Malang.This study used quantitative approach since the data were the scores of SILL questionnaire filled by thirty students on 11th grade at Heavy Equipment Department of  SMKN 1 Singosari Malang and their previous semester English score.This study reveals that the use of overall language learning strategies falls into medium level with the mean score of 2.60. Compensation strategies are the most frequently used with the mean score of 2.97. The following strategies used by the students are affective, metacognitive, cognitive, social and memory strategies. In addition, there is no significant relationship between the six categories of language learning strategies and their English achievement. It may be caused by their aim in learning English in which they focus more on getting a good grade rather than improving their skills.It is suggested that the teachers should introduce the appropriate language learning strategies to the students. Next, the students should be aware of using language learning strategies to enhance their achievement. For the next researchers, they can use other English achievement, additional factors influencing the choice of language learning strategies as variables, and employ more samples for future studies.

Abstract

Kata Kunci : Novel Tenseijyutsu Satsujin Jiken, Dampak Ijime Skripsi ini membahas tentang dampak ijime terhadap tokoh Tokiko Umezawa dalam novel Tenseijyutsu Satsujin Jiken. Karakteristik Ijime adalah (1. Dilakukan terhadap seseorang yang lemah 2. Selain itu, dilakukan secara terusmenerus menyerangfisik maupun psikologis 3. Korban akan mengalami rasa sakit yang serius). ijime bisasaja terjadi didalam atau di luar lingkungan sekolah.Penelitian dilakukan dengan menggunakan teori Sosiologi sastra. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah deskriptif analisis.Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa Tokoh Tokiko Umezawa mengalami tindakan ijime baik ijime verbal, fisik dan relasional, namun bentuk tindakan ijime yang paling banyak ia terima adalah ijime relasional (pengabaian). Tindakan-tindakan ijime yang ia terima menimbulkan dampak antara lain Tokiko Umezawa menjadi kesepian, putus asa, mencoba untuk melakukan bunuh diri, membalas dendam terhadap orang-orang yang melakukan ijime terhadap dirinya, serta memfitnah Masako sebagai pelaku pembunuhan yang ia lakukan.Penulis menyarankan bagi penelitian selanjutnya yang ingin meneliti novel Tenseijyutsu Satsujin Jiken, dapat meneliti tokoh utama dengan menggunakanteori psikologi.

Abstract

Kata Kunci : Studi kontrastif, Idiom, Kanyouku Bahasa adalah alat komunikasi untuk menyampaikan ide, pikiran, hasrat, dan keinginan kepada orang lain. Bahasa dapat dinyatakan dalam dua cara, yaitu secara lisan maupun tulisan. Dalam penyampaian pesan secara lisan maupun tulisan, penutur dan lawan tutur  untuk memperhalus penyampaiannya sering kali menggunakan idiom atau yang dalam bahasa Jepangnya disebut dengan Kanyouku.Tetapi masih ditemukannya adanya kesulitan dalam penggunaan idiom karenakurangnya pemahaman makna idiom.  Studi ini menggunakan metode penelitian deskriptif kontrastif. Dengan tujuan untuk mengetahui makna yang terdapat pada idiom bahasa Jepang dan bahasa Indonesia yang menggunakan kata ‘kepala’ serta untuk menemukan persamaan dan perbedaan makna dari kedua idiom tersebut. Studi ini merupakan studi kepustakaan yang data-datanya pun di peroleh dari beberapa kamus idiom bahasa Jepang maupun bahasa Indonesia. Hasil studi menunjukkan bahwa idiom bahasa jepang maupun bahasa Indonesia menunjukkan arti yang bermacam-macam, yaitu menunjukkan perasaan, menunjukkan keadaan tubuh, sifat/watak, dan perilaku, menunjukkan perbuatan,pergerakan, aktifitas/kegiatan, menunjukkan keadaan derajat, nilai/harga, dan menunjukkan keadaan masyarakat, kebudayaan, dan kehidupan. Selain itu ditemukan juga adanya persaaman dan perbedaan makna idiomatikal atau maknaleksikal suatu idiom ‘kepala’, bahkan ditemukan juga idiom ‘kepala’ yang mempunyai persamaan makna idiomatikal beserta makna leksikalnya atau dengan kata lain idiom tersebut dapat langsung diterjemahkan ke dalam bahasa Jepang maupun bahasa Indonesia, dan juga tidak ditemukannya idiom bahasa Jepang maupun Indonesia yang mempunyai perbedaan makna leksikal.

Abstract

Keywords : error analysis, surface strategy taxonomy, source of error, writingtasksLearning a second language is difficult for learners, especially Indonesians because they must learn about grammar of the second language. The learners sometimes make an error in their learning process because they borrow the rules of their first language to the second language. Writing is the most difficult skill. Therefore, they often make some errors. The writer would like to answer three problems of this study which are: what are the types and sources of errors found on the writing tasks produced by students of “AZET Language Centre Malang” and what is the most frequent type and source of error made in the writing tasks produced by students of “AZET Language Centre Malang”. The purposes of this study are to identify the types and sources of errors found and to analyze and find the most frequent type and source of error found. This study uses surface strategy taxonomy based on Dulay’s et al theory (1982) and source of errors based on Brown (1980) and James’ theory (1998).This study uses qualitative research. The data of this study are taken from the writing tasks produced by students of “AZET Language Centre Malang”. AZET is one of the famous English courses in Malang which sends its students to study abroad. In this study, there are 10 students as the participant based on their level, period, and target to achieve the high score in IELTS. IELTS is one of the requirements to study abroad.The finding shows that based on the surface strategy taxonomy by Dulay et al (1982), there are Omission (43,1%), Misformation (39,4%), Addition (16,5%), and Misformation (1,1%). Omission has the highest number where errors occured. For the source of error based on Brown (1980) and James (1998), there are Interlingual Transfer (23,94%) and Intralingual Negative Transfer (76,1%). From this finding,  all of the students make errors and they do not apply all of the rules necessary in using the target language. It proves that it is difficult for them to achieve their high score target in IELTS.The researcher suggests the next researchers to analyze by using another theory or adding more detailed explanation in the source of error. The next researchers can also broaden the data in order to get more variety of data which are going to be analyzed.

Abstract

Kata Kunci: concordance de temps du passé, hubungan sebab-akibat, alur Concordance de temps du passé merupakan penyesuaian bentuk kata kerja kala lampau pada kalimat majemuk dalam bahasa Prancis sebagai cara dalam memahami alur suatu peristiwa. Bentuk ini merupakan pengetahuan yang  sangat diperlukan bagi pembaca khususnya pembelajar bahasa Prancis untuk memahami pola penceritaan tidak hanya pada kalimat namun juga keseluruhan isi cerita dalam novel. Oleh karena itu, peneliti mengadakan studi tentang concordance de temps du passé pada klausa hubungan sebab-akibat kalimat majemuk bertingkat yang terdapat dalam novel Alice au pays des merveilles (AAPDM). Rumusan masalah dalam penelitian ini adalah (1) Bagaimana deskripsi concordance de temps du passé pada klausa hubungan sebab-akibat kalimat majemuk bertingkat dan (2) Bagaimana  keterkaitan alur pada klausa hubungan sebab-akibat kalimat majemuk bertingkat yang menggunakan kata kerja kala lampau. Studi ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif untuk mendeskripsikan hubungan sebab-akibat pada kalimat majemuk bertingkat yang menggunakan kata kerja kala lampau. Studi deskriptif digunakan karena studi ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis fenomena klausa hubungan sebab-akibat yang dihubungkan dengan teori-teori action concordance de temps du passé, yakni antériorité, postériorité, simultanéité agar nantinya dapat diketahui bentuk alur yang muncul. Hasil studi menunjukkan hanya terdapat dua action dari concordance de temps du passé yang terdapat dalam novel, yakni action simultanéité dan action antériorité. Action simultanéité memiliki jumlah data sebanyak 9 sedangkan action antériorité yang dapat menunjukkan bentuk alur mundur memiliki jumlah data sebanyak 2. Sebagian besar konjungsi yang ditemukan adalah konjungsi hubungan sebab, yakni comme dan parce que. Dengan demikian, sebagian besar hubungan dari klausa dalam kalimat majemuk bertingkat ialah hubungan sebab.  Peneliti menyarankan kepada peneliti selanjutnya untuk memfokuskan salah satu action concordance de temps du passé yakni action antériorité yang menunjukkan alur mundur pada novel atau action postériorité yang menunjukkan alur maju dalam bentuk karya sastra lain seperti naskah drama atau film.
