Abstract

Food as the basic needs of human life has made the culinary world a developing business. With the design of culinary school facilities, the objective of this design project is to create an interior environemnt that can support the quality learning activities that can compete with the contemporary culinary world. This culinary school design project was inspired by the concept of "Back to Nature," which was implemented in the forms and colors containing elements of Nature, such as use of the wood, concrete and natural stone on the walls, furniture, roof, and floor. This concept was chosen in order to be able to solve the design problems such as the lack of space, the unclear grouping and circulation, and the unattractive interior atmosphere.

Abstract

The development of the era is occurring along with the change in people’s lifestyle, particularly in the life of students. Their time are often consumed by studying, leaving very little room for entertainment. This phenomenon has triggered entrepreneurs to view the coffee shop as a promising business opportunity. Many coffee shops today offer a one-stop shopping system such that visitors can fulfill their various desires altogether at a single place. This research develops the idea of a Collaborative Coffee Shop as a place that can accommodate the multiple needs of students as well as the general public, such as working, interacting, collaborating, having discussions and doing other activities that can enrich the ideas of each individual. The objective of this research design project is to create an interior design with the Collaborative concept that can improve productivity, creativity and business development of the Collaborative Coffee Shop users. The method used in this design process is the Design Thinking method, consisting of six steps, which are (1) Empathize and Define, (2) Research, (3) Ideate, (4) Prototype, (5) Test, and (6) Implement. Additional facilities designed in this research include an educative playground, a personal area, a modular workstation, and a play area to support the Collaborative concept. The benefits that students, particularly in Surabaya, can take privilege of with the existence of this coffee shop is a modular facility and an open space system that can provide a more relaxed working atmosphere and encourage social interaction among individuals

Abstract

Kitchen is one of the important areas in a house, mainly used to prepare and cook food. Just as cooking has evolved from a food preparation activity to an entertainment activity, the kitchen has also evolved beyond its traditional function. Accommodating these changes requires a deep understanding of each component of the kitchen and its accessibility, both for normal users as well as for the disabled and wheelchair users. In this research, the ethnographic method of study was used to observe and understand disabled users better. The design resulted adopts a modular system so that users can locate and adjust each module according to their space and needs. These modules are separated, so users can fit them according to their needs. The modules consist of a storage module unit which can be reached by the two types of user, an adjustable work station because these two types of users have different ergonomic reach, and a sink that is adjusted to a universal measurement to ensure comfort of use.
