Abstract

Effective thermal management is critical for ensuring the performance, safety, and longevity of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) in electric two-wheeled vehicles. This study develops a cost-efficient, air-based Battery Thermal Management System (BTMS) for a 460 Wh battery pack. As LIBs can convert up to 20% of input energy into heat due to internal resistance and electrochemical reactions, inadequate heat dissipation may lead to thermal runaway, potentially causing fire or explosion. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations were employed to explore and optimize various air-cooling configurations. The most effective design—identified through simulation—was experimentally validated using an electronic battery tester under high-current loads. Results indicate that an optimized push-pull air-cooling configuration significantly reduces peak battery temperatures and maintains them within safe operational limits, thereby enhancing battery reliability and extending its lifecycle. This work contributes to the advancement of practical and affordable thermal solutions for sustainable electric mobility, particularly in the low-power vehicle segment.

Abstract

The welding process on structural plates plays a critical role in the construction of offshore platforms, where joint integrity directly determines the strength, safety, and reliability of the entire structure. In practice, however, welding defects such as Lack of Fusion (LOF), Lack of Penetration (LOP), and Excessive Spatter Inclusion (ESI) continue to occur, indicating that the process has not yet reached a zero-defect condition. This case study addresses the problem by applying the Six Sigma DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control) framework combined with the Kaizen approach for continuous improvement. Welding data from a single offshore fabrication project were analyzed for the period August 2024 to January 2025, during which 18,754 mm of weld defects were recorded out of 123,030 mm of welding inspected. The average Defects Per Million Opportunities (DPMO) was 45,238, corresponding to a sigma level of 3.24. LOF was the dominant defect, accounting for 50.9% of total defects. Control-chart analysis showed several monthly data points falling outside the control limits, indicating process instability and an urgent need for systematic improvement. A Kaizen-based improvement plan was developed around equipment maintenance, operator-skill enhancement, proper material handling, and standardization of welding procedures. These proposed initiatives are intended to reduce defect rates while cultivating a sustainable, disciplined quality culture. As a single-company, single-project case study, the findings establish a quantitative baseline and improvement roadmap rather than a generalizable industry benchmark; nonetheless, the results indicate that integrating Six Sigma with Kaizen is a promising approach for reducing welding defects, improving joint quality, and supporting long-term process stability in offshore platform fabrication.

Abstract

In citric acid medium, Ceiba pentandra seed extract an agricultural by product contains abundant heterocyclic and nitrogen-containing compounds that function as efficient and environmentally benign corrosion inhibitors. Compared with conventional synthetic inhibitors, plant-based extracts offer notable advantages, including low toxicity, biodegradability, renewability, and cost-effectiveness. The extract was prepared using the reflux method and tested at concentrations ranging from 1000 to 3000 ppm. The active functional groups were identified by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), while corrosion inhibition performance was evaluated using Potentiodynamic Polarization (PDP) and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS). At 3000 ppm, the extract exhibited inhibition efficiencies of 81.42% (PDP) and 74.21% (EIS), attributed to the adsorption of aromatic, heterocyclic, and carbonyl groups onto the metal surface. These findings confirm the potential of Ceiba pentandra seed extract as a sustainable, low-cost, and high-performance green corrosion inhibitor, underscoring its promise as an environmentally safe alternative to conventional hazardous inhibitors.

Abstract

Holocellulose isolated from waru bark fiber (HCT) holds significant potential as a sustainable material for packaging applications in the food, pharmaceutical, and agricultural industries. Understanding its characteristics is crucial for optimizing chemical and mechanical treatments to enhance performance. This study isolated holocellulose from waru bark fibers via sequential hydrothermal alkaline (5% NaOH) and acid-bleaching (NaClO₂-CH₃COOH) treatments at 60°C. The raw fibers (RW-HCT) and treated holocellulose (TR-HCT) were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). FTIR analysis confirmed the effective removal of lignin and hemicellulose components in TR-HCT, evidenced by the disappearance of peaks at 1735.29 cm⁻¹ (C=O stretching) and 1327.68 cm⁻¹ (C–O in lignin). XRD results showed that the crystallinity index increased from 62.29% ± 3.47 (RW-HCT) to 77.41% ± 5.26 (TR-HCT). SEM micrographs revealed a rougher, cleaner fiber surface in TR-HCT due to the removal of non-cellulosic impurities. TGA demonstrated improved thermal stability of TR-HCT, with a higher residual mass (1.01%) compared to RW-HCT (−6.43%). The findings indicate that holocellulose from waru bark fibers is a promising, eco-friendly reinforcement material for developing biodegradable packaging composites.

Abstract

The accuracy and reliability of mold manufacturing are essential to ensure product quality and operational safety. Among mold components, the bottom plate of a brake handle mold plays a structurally critical role; however, previous studies have given limited attention to its mechanical performance. This research addresses that gap by performing a Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to evaluate the stress distribution, deformation, and safety factor of an AISI 1045 steel bottom plate. Static loading simulations of 60 N, 120 N, and 180 N representing typical operational forces in brake handle molds, were performed using SolidWorks 2020. The results revealed extremely low von Mises stresses (ranging from 3.96 × 10⁻² MPa to 1.195 × 10⁻³ MPa) and very small deformations (10⁻⁷ to 10⁻⁶ mm), producing unrealistically high safety factors (SF 44.6 to 133.7). These anomalies indicate inconsistencies between the numerical output and theoretical expectations, suggesting that the boundary conditions and load configurations used in the simulation may not fully represent actual working conditions. Despite these limitations, this study contributes to identifying how modeling assumptions influence FEA results and emphasizes the importance of model validation and refinement to achieve more realistic and reliable simulations for practical design optimization. Future work will focus on improving boundary condition definitions and conducting experimental validation to verify model accuracy.

Abstract

Production efficiency and manufacturability are critical factors for industrial competitiveness, particularly for components such as protective covers for the LED AII 451 lighting unit. The existing cover design relies on conventional machining and consists of five separately manufactured parts, resulting in high assembly time and elevated production cost. This study applies Quality Function Deployment (QFD) to reengineer the LED AII 451 cover in order to improve manufacturing efficiency, simplify assembly, and enhance product safety. Customer needs were collected from 25 respondents (20 production operators and 5 maintenance technicians) through interviews, questionnaires, and direct technical observation, and were translated into technical parameters using the House of Quality. The analysis identified six prioritized technical improvements: tailoring the manufacturing process to product dimensions, adopting a lightweight plastic material (Delrin/PVC), reducing the total component count, using screw-based assembly, incorporating chamfered edges, and ensuring material strength and durability. The redesigned cover reduced the number of components from five to three (40% reduction), decreased average assembly time from 12 to 9 minutes (25% reduction), and lowered relative production cost from 100% to 85% (15% reduction), while also improving ergonomics and operator safety. These results demonstrate that QFD provides a structured, quantitatively validated approach for translating customer requirements into manufacturable design improvements for industrial lighting protection components.

Abstract

The rising electricity consumption in Indonesian buildings highlights the critical importance of energy efficiency. Lighting systems, especially in libraries, account for a significant portion of overall building energy use. However, fewer than 5% of university libraries in Indonesia publish their energy audit data, indicating a scarcity of studies based on actual field measurements. This study is the first to utilize direct measurement data from the Politeknik Negeri Jakarta (PNJ) Library to evaluate its lighting system and identify potential energy savings. A quantitative audit was conducted by collecting data on room dimensions, lamp specifications, lighting points, and operating hours. The existing installations of Tubular Light Emitting Diodes (TLED, 8 W) and Light Emitting Diodes (LED, 13 W) were compared against the minimum illuminance standards defined by the Indonesian National Standard (SNI). The results revealed instances of excessive lighting, with potential savings of 37.8 kWh/month on the first floor and 32.3 kWh/month on the second floor. In this retrofit scenario, no replacement of lamp types was undertaken to avoid additional investment costs. Instead, optimization was achieved by adjusting the number of luminaires based on the SNI minimum lux standard to achieve optimal energy efficiency while maintaining illumination quality. These findings offer practical insights for building managers in implementing energy conservation strategies and serve as a reference for future studies integrating occupant-based lighting control systems.

Abstract

In integrated industrial facilities, selecting the optimal steam turbine configuration requires balancing electrical generation efficiency with overall system energy utilization. This study presents a quantitative comparative performance analysis between a 33 MW condensing steam turbine and a 30 MW backpressure steam turbine operating simultaneously at the cogeneration power plant of PT Bintan Alumina Indonesia. Empirical data were obtained from the plant's Distributed Control System (DCS), consisting of synchronized high-frequency hourly measurements over a 24-hour operational period, including steam flow rate, inlet and exhaust pressure, temperature, and generator load. Thermodynamic analyses based on enthalpy drops across the turbines were performed to calculate isentropic efficiency, specific steam consumption (SSC), and generator efficiency. The condensing turbine achieved higher thermal performance, with an isentropic efficiency of 64.22% and a low SSC of 4.76 t·h⁻¹·MW⁻¹, indicating superior energy conversion efficiency. Conversely, the backpressure turbine exhibited slightly lower isentropic efficiency of 61.70% but demonstrated higher generator conversion efficiency of 95.49% and greater load stability, aligning with process steam requirements. These results empirically confirm a clear operational trade-off: the condensing turbine is optimal for maximizing electrical output, whereas the backpressure turbine enhances overall plant energy recovery and reliability in combined heat and power (CHP) operation. This study provides a robust data-driven benchmark for assessing turbine performance in industrial cogeneration systems and offers practical insights for improving energy efficiency, reducing steam consumption, and supporting sustainable operation in energy-intensive manufacturing industries.

Abstract

The drying process of harvested grain is critical for maintaining quality and preventing spoilage. Traditional sun-drying methods are inefficient and highly dependent on weather conditions, resulting in inconsistent yields and potential losses. This study aimed to design and construct a mini rotary dryer as an effective and efficient tool for drying grain, specifically designed for organic rice farmers. A rotary dryer prototype was built and tested to reduce the moisture content of 50 kg of freshly harvested grain from 50% to 13.7% within 8 hours. Energy consumption, including electricity and gas usage, was monitored to evaluate operational cost efficiency. The results showed that the rotary dryer reliably achieved the target moisture content with a total operational cost of IDR 13,076, equivalent to approximately IDR 261.5 per kilogram of dry grain. Compared with traditional drying, the rotary dryer significantly reduces drying time and dependence on weather while maintaining consistent drying quality. The developed mini rotary dryer provides a practical and economically feasible solution to improve post-harvest processing for organic rice farmers. This study contributes to sustainable agricultural practices by optimizing drying technology suitable for small-scale farming.

Abstract

The primary challenges in rack design are the use of weak materials and materials that are harmful to the environment. This research aims to develop an optimal rack design by evaluating the safety factors of the frame structure to ensure its reliability and safety, utilizing environmentally friendly Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) material. The testing method employed is a Solidworks-based simulation, which enables a more efficient and precise design process through parametric modeling for structural optimization. The synergy between design methodology and software-based simulation, combined with the advantages of ABS material, can produce innovative, effective, and sustainable engineering strategies, potentially accelerating product development. In the proposed design, the simulation load is applied to the four frame legs. A maximum load of 50 kg is applied to each of the top three shelves, while the bottom shelf is subjected to a load of 100 kg (equivalent to 1000 N). This configuration assumes the bottom rack bears a greater load due to accommodating a larger volume of water for circulation. The analysis revealed a maximum compressive strength of 13.734 MPa at the joint end of the loaded surface, with the smallest stress value recorded at 1.149 MPa. The greatest load occurred at joint level no. 4, as this section is subjected to water pressure from the pump. Strain distribution analysis showed a maximum strain of 0.00491 at the same joint, while the minimum strain was 0.00041. The greatest load was located at joint level no. 1, where a water tank holding approximately 100 liters of water is situated. Displacement analysis of the shelf above the floor indicated a maximum deformation of 48.165 mm (categorized as light deformation) and a minimum deformation of 0 mm.
