Abstract

The problem of the writer had outlined in this paper deals with vocabularies which are frequently used in written language, in technical term, they are called High Frequency Word (HFW). The primary goal of this research was to figure out HFW provided in the English written modules produced by the lecturers of State Islamic College Jurai Siwo Metro. The writer took five modules written by five different lecturers as his purposive sample. A qualitative descriptive was used to approach the data. The researcher collected the data by observation and documentation. Meanwhile, Creswell’s generic steps model was used to analyze the data. The result of analysis illustrates that there are 145 High Frequency Word found on those five modules. It can be classified by the word classes namely 31% adjective, 23% noun, 23% verb, 23% adverb. In conclusion, there are several HFW in the English written modules that are used in the State Islamic College Jurai Siwo Metro

Abstract

Reading comprehension and writing as the crucial skills must be instructed effectively in order to engage the students in the meaningful teaching and learning process. One of the ways to increase students’ reading comprehension and writing achievement is by the use of paraphrasing strategy in the classroom instruction. Through the application of the paraphrasing strategy, it is easy for the students to internalize the information of the original source comprehensively; thus, students’ reading comprehension achievement is increased. In relation to the improvement of students’ reading comprehension achievement, students’ writing achievement is also increased by the use of paraphrasing strategy since the students can rewrite the text in to their own writing style. Therefore, the use of paraphrasing strategy is considered as one of the beneficial ways used to enhance students’ reading comprehension and writing achievement.

Abstract

Nowadays, the advanced technology widely makes different ways to learn English grammar. This study is aimed to analyze academic writing via blog posting in grammatical aspects. It is involved 11 students of English Language Teaching Department which have 18 articles published on English blog. Therefore, the data were collected through observation and documentation by Creswell’s model. To display all of the results the writer used chart in grammatical analysis. The result of this study had been classified into four common errors, namely concord with 47% error items, word order with 33% error items, spelling with 14% error items, and parallel structure with 6% error items. The result of the study can encourage the students to pay big attention to grammatical aspects of writing

Abstract

The objectives of the research are to examine: (1) whether Content-Based Instruction is more effective than Audio-Lingual Method to teach speaking to the third semester students of STAIN Jurai Siwo Metro in the academic year of 2012/2013; (2) whether the students having high creativity have better speaking skill than those having low creativity; and (3) whether there is an interaction between teaching methods and students’ creativity in teaching speaking. The method in this research was experimental study. It was conducted at the third semester students of STAIN Jurai Siwo Metro in the academic year of 2012/2013. The sample of the research was two classes; C consists of 40 students as an experimental class and E consists of 40 students as a control class. The sampling technique used was cluster random sampling. Each class was divided into two groups (the students having high and low creativity). The techniques of collecting data were creativity test and speaking test that were tried out to know their readability. The data were analyzed by using Multifactor Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) test of 2 x 2 and Tukey test.The result of data analysis shows that: (1) Content-Based Instruction is more effective than Audio-Lingual Method to teach speaking (2) the students having high creativity have better speaking skill than the students having low creativity and (3) there is an interaction between teaching methods and students’ creativity in teaching speaking. Based on the finding, it can be concluded that Content-Based Instruction is an effective method to teach speaking

Abstract

This paper is titled “Grammatical Error Analysis of Students’ Comment Writing Based on Facebook Game in English Intensive Class of STAIN JURAI SIWO METRO 2013”. The aim of this research is to describe grammatical errors which are made by the students of English Intensive Class.  It is a qualitative-descriptive research. The data are taken from the result of students’ comment writing on Facebook game in English intensive class. Meanwhile, the techniques to collect the data used note and observation. The result is displayed in words. The research shows that the grammatical errors made by the students in English intensive class are using double auxiliary, confusing to apply nominal or verbal sentence, and making error interrogative form pattern

Abstract

Listening and speaking are the important skills that have to be mastered by the students. By having these skills, the students can communicate with others easily. There are many strategies that can be used to teach listening and speaking skills. One of the strategies is by using animation videos. Many students of all ages still like watching animation videos for they are interesting. Animation videos can help the students more understand because they present visual context aids that assist the students comprehend and improve their learning skills. Animation videos can be integrated with discussion method. This paper aims at providing required information about the advantages of animation videos and how to use them in the teaching and learning English activity

Abstract

This descriptive-qualitative research investigated the modulation phenomena and measured the accuracy level of the phenomena occurring in the translated text. It involved 40 students at the fifth semester of English education program in STAIN Jurai Siwo Metro. The data were taken from each participant’s translated texts using observation and documentation. The kinds of text are scientific and literary texts. Both texts contain 20 modulation phenomena. All of the phenomena were analyzed by comparing the proper translation text with the translated text produced by the students and then measured in the term of accuracy level. The researcher found 11 Fixed Modulation (FM) and 9 Optional Modulation (OM). In the term of accuracy, the FM is more accurate than OM but OM has a lower inaccurate level than FM has. Related to the accuracy percentage of all phenomena, there are 16% categorized as accurate, 39% as less accurate, and 45% as inaccurate. In conclusion, the students are still lack of the accuracy in modulation so that they should be able to let themselves free from influential factors of the source language structure and to express natural and equivalent translation in target language
