Abstract

During the preparation of The Birds of Wallacea (White & Bruce 1986), some small island records for the Lesser Sundas were unintentionally omitted although originally covered during the initial compilation of locality data. Their exclusion was due to the long and discontinuous preparation of the annotated checklist. Their inclusion here is offered as a first contribution supplementing the checklist data. A few brief annotations have also been included.

Abstract

The jungle babblers Timaliidae as a whole are renowned vocalists, more easily identified by their collectively varied songs than by their muted plumages. Surprisingly, the ornithological literature is incomplete concerning the repertoires of individual babbler species, as well as for noting regional (or racial) differences. The song of the Abbott's Babbler Trichastoma abbotti in south-eastern Sumatra has recently been the subject of a note in Kukila (Nash & Hash 1985), describing the full adult song of the male bird, and the duelling call notes of the female. Further studies of this species by the authors have revealed an unusual additional song by the male, a ten-note spontaneous 'foraging' song. This song was recorded in the Padang-Sugihan Wildlife Reserve, South Sumatra province, at approximately 0745 hrs. on 12 September 1985, in riverine swamp forest. The recorded song was examined on a Unigon 4500 Uniscan Spectrum Analyzer, and the sonogram was made on a Kay Digital Sono-Graph 7800 set to a wide (300 Khz) band range.

Abstract

Tanjung Puting National Park is located on the south coast of Kalimantan (Borneo) in the province of Kalimantan Tengah, between 2"35'S and 3° 20'S and 111° 50' and 112° 15'E. Tanjung Puting was first established as a game reserve in two parts during 1936 and 1937 by the Dutch colonial government and the Sultan of Kotawaringin. Consisting of 305,000 ha the reserve was established primarily for the protection of orangutans Pongo pygmaeus, Proboscis Monkeys Nasalls larvatus and rhinoceros Dicerorhinus sumatrensis with the latter, however, becoming extinct in the 1940's due to severe hunting pressure for its horns. Orangutans and proboscis monkeys still remain plentiful. In 1982 the status of Tanjung puting was upgraded to National park.

Abstract

Gulls (Laridae) are a familiar group of birds at temperate and subtropical latitudes in both northern and southern hemispheres. However, they are rarely encountered in the tropics, particularly those of Asia and the Pacific. It is therefore interesting to note a group of 20 Black-headed Gulls Larus ridibundus apparently over-wintering in Sorong harbour at the extreme western tip of Irian Jaya (New Guinea) in January and February 1986.

Abstract

The Tawny-breasted Parrofinch Erythrura hyperythra was described for the first time by Reichenbach in 1862 from a specimen erroneously thought to have been collected in New Guinea. Vordeman (1883) described a second specimen collected in west Java. The parrotfinch has since been reported from Bast Java, Lombok, Sumbawa, Flores, Sulawesi, West and East Malaysia, Luzon and Mindoro. However, because of its rarity and secretive behaviour, very little is known of the bird in nature (but see Burkard, 1982).
