Abstract

Observations made during 2000-2003 and 2012, mainly in estuarine and other coastal habitats, increase the list of bird species known from Batam and Bintan islands by 15 (to 137) and two species (to 181) respectively. These records include five species new for the Riau Archipelago (Red-tailed Tropicbird Phaeton rubricauda, Cattle Egret Bubulcus ibis, Wood Sandpiper Tringa glareola, Curlew Sandpiper Calidris ferruginea and House Crow Corvus splendens). We also present additional records of species previously noted as uncommon or of restricted distribution in the region. Differences between the Riau Archipelago and nearby Singapore in the total number of known bird species (229 and 375 species, respectively) may be partly due to their relative isolation from mainland Southeast Asia, but the much greater survey effort on Singapore over many years must also be a significant factor. Additional, hitherto unpublished, observations by birdwatchers are sought to assess the relative importance of these explanations.

Abstract

Trapping for the domestic and international pet trade is a significant conservation threat to several species of psittacines in the Northern Moluccas, Indonesia. Field studies conducted on the status of parrots in this region in the early 1990s assessed the impact of the trade and provided recommendations for regulations, but since then little research has been conducted to update the conservation status of these species. In July–August 2012, we conducted interviews and field surveys to assess the status of the parrot trade in seven villages on Obi Island, Maluku Utara province. We found substantial variation in prices depending on their final market, a heterogeneous pattern of trapping rates around the island, and that parrot trapping is very rarely the primary source of income for the trapper. Here we estimate the annual harvest for the three most commonly trapped species: Chattering Lory Lorius garrulus, Violet-necked Lory Eos squamata, and Eclectus Parrot Eclectus roratus. Our estimate for the minimum annual harvest of the Vulnerable-listed Chattering Lory on Obi is substantially higher than previous estimates for the global annual harvest of this species. It seems likely that the Chattering Lory, and in particular the distinctive flavopalliatus subspecies, is more threatened than is currently assumed. We recommend urgent action to assess the population size of this species on Obi, and suggest that a scheme of stakeholder-led no-take zones may be an effective conservation strategy for parrots on the island.

Abstract

The Starry Owlet-Nightjar Aegotheles tatei, also known as Spangled, Star-spotted or Rand’s Owlet-Nightjar, is one of the least known birds of New Guinea’s lowland rainforests. It was recognized as a distinct species as recently as 2000 and its vocalizations were first documented in 2008. Although hitherto all observations of the species were from Papua New Guinea, its presence in Papua (Irian Jaya) was predictable since the type locality is close to the Indonesian border. A 6-day targeted search for the Starry Owlet-Nightjar was undertaken in lowland forest along the Kali Muyu River. The first Indonesian record for this species was confirmed on 6 October 2012, when a bird was spotlighted and sound recordings of the song and the alarm call were obtained. According to local people, the species may be widespread in the area.
