Abstract

Let Y and X be interval variables. Proportional reduction in variance (PRV) of Y given X is equal to the R2 or coefficient of determination of Y with respect to X. This phenomenon can be generalized to more than one explanatory variables. It describes the PRV from the marginal distribution to the conditional distribution of response Y. This paper deals with PRV as a primary tool for measuring nominal association. Several situations will be considered. It will be discussed its relationship with Goodman and Kruskal tau, proportional reduction in uncertainty (PRU) defined by Bui Quoc through Shannon entropy, canonical correlation through Bertier and Tenenhaus’s optimal coding, and also with RV coefficient.

Abstract

We prove the regularity of the operator Ω∈−=∫Ωxdsxxu)()(||ln21)(ξξφξπ∂ using similar technique for proving Cauchy integral operator. If φ are continue on ∂Ω, we prove that u is uniformly Holder continue in Ω with Holder exponent α for every α ∈ (0,1). However, from the proof, if uL then u is in the same space as before.

Abstract

Polypyrrole (PPY) and Prussian blue (PB) are well known electrochromic materials having different ranges of electrochromicity and recycleability. In order to study the possibility of optimizing theirs properties, composites of PPY-PB have been synthesized by means of electrochemical process. The results of synthesis are characterized by cyclic voltammogram, UV-Visible spectroscopy and infrared measurements. The analysis of data indicates good electrochromic contrast of the composite film and significant enhancement of recycleability. Further enhancement of recycleability of PPY-PB composites could still be expected by optimization of PPY/PB composition in the composites.

Abstract

The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) has become a widely used technique for the amplification of DNA for gene cloning, polymorphisms detection, disease diagnostics, and many others. The starting material for PCR is amount of DNA consist of the sequence interested to be amplified, known as template DNA. Tempate DNA can be obtained in several ways. The preparation of template DNA from muscle tissue by biopsy, blood samples by veni puncture, follicle cells in single hairs, and the cells from urinary tract still have some disadvantages. Some of the methods are invasive, and some of them require DNA isolation steps. In the recent study, we report that preparation of template DNA can be done without isolation steps, and the starting material is mouth epithelial cells obtained from mouth wash fluid. This new method is conducted in the following steps : (i) collecting epithelial cells in mouth wash fluid, (ii) extraction of the cells, (iii) breaking the cells with lysis buffer, (iv) using lysat as a source of template DNA for PCR. Result of this simple procedure showed as 0,4 kb in size band of mitochondrial DNA fragment, that obtained from PCR employing primer M-1 and M-2. PCR without DNA isolation from mouth epithelial cells will be of benefit in the study of population analysis, forensics, and is the potential method for diagnostics.

Abstract

Search for the hotest chilli pepper (Capsicum) fruits which was based on their capsaisinoid contents has been conducted. Chilli pepper fruits were collected from various places in Indonesia and two of them from Japan. From the 25 kinds of chilli pepper analysed, it was found that all C. frutescens contained capsaicinoids while in some C. annuum these compounds were not detected. Capsaicinoid content in chilli pepper fruits is affected by the their age and the highest content found in mature fruits before ripening which is indicated by the change of colour from green or pale yellow to red.
