Abstract

Identified as the core skill, the importance of reading is deniable for some reasons. First, reading is a receptive skill in that people get a lot of information and knowledge through reading. Second, reading is the fundamental for more advanced skill - writing. However,  the performance of reading comprehension differs from one learner to others. This study investigated the influence of gender and language learning strategy (LLS) preferences towards students’ reading comprehension. The participants of this study are 155 students in 9th grade of SMP N 9 Cimahi who are  divided into 68 males and 87 females. Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) proposed by Oxford (1990) and reading comprehension tests were used as the instruments. Employing causal comparative method, two way ANOVA was used in exploring 1) the differences between male and female in reading comprehension, 2) the difference between all of type LLS in reading comprehension, and 3) the interaction between gender and LLS towards reading comprehension.  This study also examines what LLS  most frequently used. To sum up, social strategy is the most one preferred  by both male and female students. Statistically significant difference is not found both in gender (p= 0.133 > 0.05) and LLS (p=0.450 > 0.05). In addition, there is no significant difference in their interaction with regard to reading comprehension (p=0.103 > 0.05).Keywords: gender, language learning strategies (LLS), reading comprehension

Abstract

This study aims at analyzing EFL students’ errors in writing skripsi as the requirement to leave academy. The subjects of this study were thirty three skripsi-s written by the students who majored English language education in STKIP Siliwangi. The analysis of this study is based on the checklist of research articles elements in skripsi as proposed by Paltridge and Starfield (2007) who state that there are six moves to analyze the elements of skripsi. The results show that, based on each move of the checklist, there are only less than 50% of the students who can fulfill the requirements of each move item. Based on the facts, further research and development to resolve the problems are necessarily needed. We also need to reformulate a good standard of academic writing agreed by the institution through a book containing guidelines of how to make an appropriate skripsi-s. Key terms: analysis, students’ errors, skripsi

Abstract

This study investigated students’ anxiety in speaking English in one Hotel and Tourism College in Bandung. This study examined types of anxiety, and source anxiety. This study was implementing characteristic of a case study. The data were obtained through observation of class interaction and interview. The data were analyzed descriptively and interpreted to answer the research question. The study revealed two findings related to research questions. First, two types of anxiety were evidenced, i.e. trait anxiety and state/situational anxiety. Second, the students’ anxiety in English speaking class was derived from three main sources of anxiety, i.e. communication apprehension, test anxiety and fear of negative evaluation. Moreover, as the interview data revealed, lack of vocabularies and lack of preparation have also contributed to students’ anxiety in speaking. These findings suggest that the teacher should be more aware of students’ anxiety in order to arouse students’ motivation to speak up confidently and fluently in an English speaking class. As such, teachers are urged to be fairly creative in devising better technique that could encourage the students to speak more. Keywords: anxiety, speaking English, factor of anxiety
