Abstract

The development of breast cancer involves many processes, including angiogenesis and metastasis. Some factors play a major role in angiogenesis, such as HIF-1α, and in metastasis, such as FAK and Wnt2. The aim of this study was to observe the effect of propolis and mangostin on the development of mammary gland cancer and on the expression of Wnt2 and FAK in Balb/C mice. Mammary gland tumors were induced in Balb/C mice by DMBA. The mice were divided into 5 treatment groups: negative control (K"‘); positive control treated with doxorubicin (14.04 mg/kg bw) (Dx); mice treated with propolis (0.32 mg/kg bw) (P) or mangostin (0.128 mg/kg bw) (M); and mice treated with a combination of propolis (0.32 mg/kg bw) and mangostin (0.128 mg/kg bw) (MP). Both mangostin and propolis did not affect the body weight of the mice. Treatment with propolis or treatment with propolis combined with mangostin was able to reduce tumor development activity in Balb/C mice. Moreover, the combination of mangostin and propolis was able to lower Wnt2, FAK and HIF-1α expression. It can be concluded that the combination of propolis and mangostin has potential to inhibit cancer development through downregulation of Wnt2, FAK, and HIF1α expression.

Abstract

The wireless sensor network (WSN) is an attractive technology, which combines embedded systems and communication networks making them more efficient and effective. Currently, WSNs have been developed for various monitoring applications. In this research, a wireless mesh network for a pipeline monitoring system was designed and developed. Sensor nodes were placed at each branch in the pipe system. Some router fails were simulated and the response of each node in the network was evaluated. Three different scenarios were examined to test the data transmission performance. The results proved that the wireless mesh network was reliable and robust. The system is able to perform link reconfiguration, automatic routing and safe data transmission from the beginning node to the end node.

Abstract

In this study a generalization of the Riesz representation theorem on non-degenerate bilinear spaces, particularly on spaces of truncated Laurent series, was developed. It was shown that any linear functional on a non-degenerate bilinear space is representable by a unique element of the space if and only if its kernel is closed. Moreover an explicit equivalent condition can be identified for the closedness property of the kernel when the bilinear space is a space of truncated Laurent series.

Abstract

A within-host mathematical model to describe the dynamics of target cells and viral load in early HIV-1 infection was developed, which incorporates a combination of RTI and PI treatments by using a pharmacokinetics model. The local stability of uninfected steady state for the model was determined using an alternative threshold. The pharmacokinetics model was employed to estimate drug efficacy in multiple drug dosing. The effect of periodic drug efficacy of pharmacokinetic type on outcome of HIV-1 infection was explored under various treatment interruptions. The effectiveness of treatment interruption was determined according to the time period of the drug holidays. The results showed that long drug holidays lead to therapy failure. Under interruption of treatments combining RTI and PI therapy, effectiveness of the treatment requires a short duration of the drug holiday.

Abstract

Caprine milk CSN1S2 protein contains bioactive peptides that have a specific function in regulating the metabolic homeostasis mechanism between different organs. However, the safe dosage of goat milk consumption has not been established previously. The aim of this study was to evaluate the safe dosage of caprine CSN1S2 protein from fresh local goat milk using acute and repeated doses (for 4 weeks) in oral toxicity studies on three month old normal Wistar rats. The CSN1S2 protein was isolated from fresh goat milk. This casein protein administered in a single oral gavage dose to 5 rat groups at a daily dose of 0, 500, 1000, 2000, 4000 mg/kg BW for acute and 28-day sub-chronic toxicity testing of rats of both sexes. The result showed no evident mortality or abnormal effects. Data analysis of body weight, water and food intake, blood biochemical parameters, clinical observation and organ weight revealed no significant differences between all groups for both sexes. The weights of some organs showed differences between groups, but these values were within the normal weight ranges. The conclusion is that caprine CSN1S2 from fresh milk is safe for food consumption because there was no indication of toxicity, no mortality, and no hematological and clinical chemistry changes.

Abstract

In this study, a quantitative analysis based on the color space coordinates CIE 1931 to determine the color combination from three LEDs (light emitting diode) sources and three laser sources separately, has been investigated. The light sources used in this research were three LEDs that emit blue light, green and red colors, and three laser sources that also emit blue light, green and red colors. Result of color combination from LEDs and laser light sources were detected using a spectrophotometer. The result of the light spectra were then analyzed using a set of color matching function that has been modified specially for the spectrophotometer used. This research produced quantitative analysis for 26 color combinations of LED light sources and 7 color combinations of laser light sources. The results of colors combination were ranging from blue, cyan, yellow, orange, red to purple. Further development is still required to obtain reliable quantitative analysis results.

Abstract

For a graph G=(V,E), a partition Ω={O1,O2,"¦,Ok} of the vertex set V is called a resolving partition if every pair of vertices u,v ∈ V(G) have distinct representations under Ω. The partition dimension of G is the minimum integer k such that G has a resolving k-partition. Many results in determining the partition dimension of graphs have been obtained. However, the known results are limited to connected graphs. In this study, the notion of the partition dimension of a graph is extended so that it can be applied to disconnected graphs as well. Some lower and upper bounds for the partition dimension of a disconnected graph are determined (if they are finite). In this paper, also the partition dimensions for some classes of disconnected graphs are given.

Abstract

In this paper, we investigate the stability of the zero solution of an integro-differential equation of the second order with variable delay. By means of the fixed point theory and an exponential weighted metric, we find sufficient conditions under which the zero solution of the equation considered is stable.
