Abstract

In this study the author discusses several short story by American writer Kurt Vonnegut: "Harrison Bergeron", "Welcome to the Monkey House", and "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow". The three stories are in the genre of science fiction and tell the future state of the earth where there is a tremendous increase in the population. The concepts of repressive State Apparatus and Ideology State Apparatus by Althusser are used to analyze how the authorities control the public in order to maintain their positions as rulers. Kurt Vonnegut’s concept of Humanism is also explored in short stories. In his three short stories, Vonnegut reveals that people in power control people in such a way that it often unquestioned. The people in power in the stories establish inhumane rules with sanctions and therefore they are difficult to break. On the other hand the authorities influence the people by means of ideologies. These forms of controls are rejected by Kurt Vonnegut with brand of Humanism.Keywords: ideology, Humanism, dystopia, Vonnegut

Abstract

This research is aimed to identify the computer terms and procedures used by the translator in translating the book Wireless Networking in the Developing World 2nd edition from English into Indonesian. In analyzing the data, the writer applies the theory proposed by Vinay and Dalbernet (in Hatim and Munday 2004:148). This theory divides translation method into two parts: (1) literal translation, and (2) oblique translation, with the seven procedures: (a) borrowing, (b) Calque, (c) literal translation, (d) transposition, (e) modulation, (f) equivalence and (g) adaptation. Having analyzed 31 data, the writer found that borrowing is the most dominant procedure used by the translator in translating the computer terms into the target language. Besides that, the translator also uses borrowing combined with transposition, calque and literal translation procedures in translating the computer terms.Keywords: translation, translation procedures, computer term

Abstract

Error analysis is a way to investigate errors in the second or foreign language acquisition.  In this thesis, error analysis is conducted to find the grammatical errors committed by the first year students of English Department at Andalas University in writings. The data were collected from the essays written by the students in Essay Writing class. The research is conducted following the steps proposed by James (1998). They are data collection, error detection, locating error, describing error, and diagnosing error. The theory used is James’ (1998) about the combined taxonomy of errors and the cause of the errors. It is supported by Lado’s theory (1957) about the types of interference. From the analysis of the data, it is found that the most frequent error committed by the students is in verb and tense while the most frequent category of error is misinformation. Furthermore, it is also found that the errors are mostly caused by intralingual factor.Keywords: grammatical error, intralingual, interlingual

Abstract

Waiting for Godot and Endgame by Samuel Beckett are two of the most famous absurd plays of the 20th century. Some previous analyses have been dealing a great deal with the philosophy of the absurd and the socio-economic critique in the works. This article tries to give a new view examined from the standpoint of the psychology of the author and through the theory of psychoanalysis of Sigmund Freud. Concepts that are used are Freudian slips, as well as symbols and free associations. This article will explore the relationship between the author’s past with his works and the ways in which the author reflects his latent desires into his work. In can be concluded that there is a common thread between the events in the author's past, and that they contribute to the author’s psychological disorders that are expressed in the two works.Keywords: Freud, Beckett, thanatos, psychobiography
