Abstract

A study about population density, group structure and diet of mittered leaf-monkeys (Presbytis melalophos, Raffles 1821) at the biological research and educational forest of Andalas University had been carried out from June to November 2012. This study used direct census method to figure out their structures and population and ad-libitum method to observe the plants consumed by animal subjects. There were 13 individuals of the leaf-monkeys in which belong to three groups. The group structure consisted of 2-3 adult individuals, 1- 2 subadults and 0-1 juvenile. Population density of the leaf monkeys in a defined area of 0.75 km2 was 17.3 individual/km2 and group density was 4 group/km2. The average of homerange was 0.13 km2. There were 9 species of plants consumed by the leaf monkeys within their homeranges those belong to 8 families.Keyword: Presbytis melalophos, direct census, ad-libitum, population density

Abstract

A study on group structures, home ranges and plant species eaten by agile gibbons (Hylobates agilis) at The Biological Education and Research Forest, Andalas University was conducted from June to November 2012. Group structures were figured out through direct count method during field surveys, while plants eaten by the gibbons were recorded using ad-libitum observation. There were 15 gibbons which belong to three monogamous groups. Structure of the groups consisted of one adult male and one adult female, one subadult, 1-2 juveniles, and 0-1 infant. Sex ratio of the population was 1.1 : 1. Average home range was 10.9 ha. Population density of the gibbons in a defined area of 62.76 ha was 23.9 individu/km2 and group density was 4.78 group/km2. There were 17 species of plant eaten by the gibbons, those species belong to 11 families, where the highest number of species belong to Euphorbiaceae and Moraceae. Keywords: Hylobates agilis, group structure, home range, food plant

Abstract

A study about the effect of fresh extract of Curcuma spp on the growth of Candida albicans, Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli was conducted from March to July 2012 at Microbiology Laboratory, Faculty of Sciences Andalas University. This experiment used nested completely randommized design. The result showed that fresh extracts of Curcuma spp. have different growth inhibition effects on C. albicans, S. aureus dan E. Coli. Temulawak (Curcuma xhantorrhiza) has the highest inhibition effect to the growth of C. albicans (13.07 mm), S. aureus (15.75 mm) and E. coli (31.56 mm). The lowest bactericidal consentration of fresh extract rhizome of temulawak for E. coli were 12.5% and 25%, but there is no inhibition effect to the C. albicans and S. aureus. Keywords: Curcuma, antimicrobial, extract, pathogen microbial

Abstract

A study on the effects of sawdust acidity on the growth and production of brown oyster mushroom (Pleurotus cystidiosus O.K. Miller) was conducted from May to August 2012 in the Laboratory of Microbiology, Department of Biology, Faculty of Sciences, Andalas University, Padang. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of acidity (pH) of sawdust media to the growth and production of the mushrooms. This study used experimental method by Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with five pH level of treatments from 4 to 8 and five replication for each pH. The results of the study showed that pH 8 gave the best growth with vegetative growth periods was 21 days, weight of the fruiting bodies was 32,60 g, and diameter of the fruiting bodies was 7,06 cm.Keywords : acidity, growth and production, Pleurotus cystidiosus, sawdust.

Abstract

Mt. Singgalang have high diversity of flora and fauna, which also drives the high diversity of small terrestrial mammals. A study on diversity of small terrestrial mammals (Muridae, Erinaceidae and Soricidae) has been caried out from July to August 2012 by using an extensive trapping method. This research used 30 snap traps and 10 20L pit fall trap drift fences in 360 trap-nights. Fourty individu of small terrestrial mammals have been caught, belong to six genera, three families and two orders. Those species were Hylomys suillus, Crocidura beccarii, Crocidura neglecta, Leopoldamys sabanus, Maxomys hylomyoides, Maxomys surifer, Niviventer rapit, and Sundamys infraluteus. Pit fall trap drift fences was more effective method to trap Crocidura spp. Keywords: species identification, small terrestrial mammals, Mt.Singgalang

Abstract

The research related to the isolation and partial characterization of indigenous fermenting bacteria from durian fruit (Durio zibethinus Murr.) was conducted from May to August 2012 in Laboratory of Microbiology, Biology Department, Andalas University. Experimental method was used and was descriptively analyzed. Ripe durian fruit contain indigenous fermenting as well as nonfermenting bacteria, that was recognized from halozone around the colony on modified GTA medium. Indigenous fermenting bacterias on the flesh of durian fruit have been characterized as Gram-positive, bacil, no endospores, motile and catalase positive. These isolates are proteolytics, amylolytics and cellulolytics and have no ability to hydrolyze fats and alcohol. Keywords : durian, fermenting, indigenous bacteria

Abstract

The research on morphometric variations of toads Duttaphrynus melanostictus (Schneider, 1799) (Anura: Bufonidae) in West Sumatera those separated geographically by Barisan Mountain was conducted from July to September 2012 with 4 sampling areas (Surantih, Padang, Suliki and Sijunjung). Survey and direct collection methods were used in this study. Morphometric characters measurement was conducted at Animal Taxonomy Laboratory of Biology Department, Faculty of Sciences, Andalas University. The purpose of this study was to determine the morphometric variation in population of D. melanostictus. The results showed that morphometric differentiation between western and eastern population of D. melanostictus in both within males and females. This finding might support that Barisan Mountain has isolated the populations. Keywords: morphometrics, variation, Duttaphrynus melanostictus, West Sumatra

Abstract

A study about gastrointestinal helminths of four species of primate was conducted from June to September 2012 at Taman Satwa Kandi Sawahlunto and Laboratory of Animal Taxonomy, Andalas University, Padang. This study aimed to identify species of gastrointestinal helminths of the primates and to determine the prevalence of the parasites. This study used non-invassive method by collecting fresh fecal samples from ten individuals of captivated primates and collecting soil samples around exhibition cages. Those samples were examined by using floating-centrifuge and filtration methods. The result showed that in the primates fecal were found eggs of Ascaris lumbricoides (prevalence= 60%), eggs of Trichuris sp. (10%), rhabditiform larvae of Strongyloides stercoralis (20%) and rhabditiform larvae of Necator americanus (20%). In the contaminated soil were found eggs of Ascaris lumbricoides, eggs of Enterobius vermicularis (10%), eggs of Necator americanus and rhabditiform larvae of Strongyloides stercoralis. This result indicated those primates were vulnerable to the infection of helminth parasites. Keywords : gastrointestinal helmints, prevalence, primates, Taman Satwa Kandi

Abstract

Rhodamine B is synthetic textile dye that currently still used for food coloring. Thus, it is important to analyse the effect of the substance on health. It was aimed to identify the histological structure changes of the mice kidney caused by Rhodamin B. This research was used experimental method with Completely Randomized Design in factorial pattern consisting of two factors such as dose of (0; 3.5; 7.0 and 14 mg/g body weight) and duration of treatment (0; 7; 14 and 21 days). The result showed that of dose and duration of treatment Rhodamin B have significant effect on the percentages of glomerular damage, and so did the interactions of both factors. Histological analysis showed the presence of narrowing of bowman space in glomerular, hipertrophy, necrosis and serosis of the tubules. The higher dose and the longer duration of treatment of Rhodamin B, the more serious of structural damages of kidney. Keywords : Rhodamin B, kidney, Mus musculus
