Abstract

An inventory of mammalian species from Koto Baru Paninggahan Solok West Sumatera was conducted from August to October  and continued from November to December 2015. The animals were identified through photographes from camera traps, personal encounters as well as indirect observations including foot prints and interviews to local inhabitants. This study has documented 15 species of mammals which belong to 11 families and 6 orders. From a total 511 identified photograps, it was known that pig-tailed macaque (Macaca nemestrina) was the most frequently photographed (212 images) and sambar deer (Rusa unicolor) was the least frequently photographed (3 images).

Abstract

Bleberan Village has ecotourism potential in terms of insects biodiversity. Moreover, this village has some beautiful tourism objects, such as Sri Gethuk waterfall and Rancang Kencono cave. In the other hand, biodiversity in this village is yet to be explored, hence this research aims at studying insects biodiversity, especially of  three orders: Orthoptera, Lepidoptera and Odonata. The final objective of this reseach is to provide information for studying and conserving biodiversity in this ecotourism region. The observation was conducted in 10 stations in both Kedung Poh (1st location) and Oyo River (2nd location ). Several ecological parameters were calculated such as density, diversity index, and distribution. In addition, enviromental parameters were also measured, i.e temperature, humidity, and light intesity. This research found 17 species of each order, with the highest number of individuals was observed in the member of Orthoptera, especially withPhlaeoba fumosa; 381 individuals (1st location 1) and  445 individuals (2nd location). In the order of Lepidoptera, species Catopsilia pomonahad the highest number of individuals, there were 31 and 46  individuals in 1st location and 2nd location, respectively. The latter is Odonata, had Orthetrum sabinawhich dominated the number with 252 individuals in 1st location and 188 individuals in 2nd location. This research also revealed that diversity index was varied between 0.79 and 0.99, with all orders were distributed in a clumped pattern. All the environmental factors had been observed and did not show any abnormality, therefore insects couldbe alive normally.

Abstract

A study about the intensity attact of ant in dragon fruit (Hylocereus sp.) plantation was conducted on September 2015 in Pariaman City, West Sumatera. The ants were collected by using free collection method with purposive sampling techniques. About 10% of the dragon fruit plant in the study location was observed. The result showed that theintensity attack on dragon fruit was caused by fire ant Solenopsis geminata(25%).

Abstract

The study about PLB induction of wild Vanda sumatrana Schltr. on MS media suplement with BAP and NAA and ploidisation by colchicine treatment was conducted from December 2014 until November 2015 at the Laboratory of Genetics and Cell Biology and Laboratory of Plant Physiology and Tissue Culture, Biology department, Faculty of Mathematic and Natural Science, Andalas University, Padang. The study aimed to 1) knowing the best concentration of 6-Benzyl amino purin (BAP) and α-Naphtalene acetic acid (NAA) for Protocorm Like Bodies (PLB)  induction from shoot tip of V. sumatrana, 2) knowing the PLB response of V. sumatrana to concentrations and soak period of colchicine and 3) find the effective concentrations and soak period of colchicine to induce tetraploid on PLB of V. sumatrana. Shoot tips from in-vitro cultured of V. sumatrana  were subcultured on Murashinge and Skoog (MS) medium supplement with 3 mg/l BAP + 0,5 mg/l NAA, 3 mg/l BAP and 1,5 mg/l BAP. PLB of diploid V. sumatrana from the best treatment were soaked in 0.05% and 0.1% colchicine for 24 and 48 hours respectively in MS liquid medium, as control were set PLB without colchicine treatment. The results showed that MS medium supplemented with 1.5 mg/l BAP was the best formula to induce PLB. The highest percentage of survival rate of PLB and percentage of survived PLB regenerated shoot was obtained from 0.05% colchicine with 24 hours soak period treatment. The effective treatment to induce tetraploid on PLB of V. sumatrana Schltr. was obtained from 0.05% colchicine solution for 24 hours soak period.

Abstract

Research about inventory of ants Myrmicinae (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) in Nature Reserve Maninjau Utara-Selatan, Agam, West Sumatra was conducted from June to December 2015 by using the "Quadra protocol" which consist of a combination of four methods:  free collection, leaf litter sampling, soil sampling, honey  bait. A total of 19 species, 9 genera, 5 tribe were collected. Pheidole was found as genus with the highest number of species (9 species), followed by Crematogaster (3 species).

Abstract

The research about callus induction Artemisia vulgaris L. by giving several concentration 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), has been done from May to August 2015 in Plant Physiology Laboratory and Tissue Culture, Department of Biology, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Science, University of Andalas. The aim of this studywas found the effective concentration of 2,4-D to induce callus of A. vulgaris. The research used Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with 7 treatments and 4 replications. The treatments were : without 2,4-D (control); 0.25 mg/L 2,4-D; 0.50 mg/L 2,4-D; 0.75 mg/L 2,4-D; 1.00 mg/L 2,4-D; 1.25 mg/L 2,4-D; 1.5 mg/L 2,4-D. The result showed that 0.25-1,5 mg/L 2,4-D were able induction callus of A. vulgaris, withcompactuntilthefriabletexture, color ofthe resultingcallusisyellowish green, brownish-green, yellow-brown, whiteyellowishandgreenishwhite. 2,4-D 1.5mg/Lwas the best concentrationto increase fresh weight of callus.

Abstract

The study on aggressive behavior of long-tailed macaques has been conducted from May to July 2016 at Gunung Meru, Padang, West Sumatra. This study aimed to compare between provocated and non-provocated aggressive behaviors of the macaques toward human visitors at Gunung Meru feeding site. This study used all-occurrence sampling method to record aggressive interactions from the macaques along the visitors behavior. One or more visitors were followed for ten minutes at the monkey feeding ground for a total 78.5 hours. The aggressive behaviors of long-tailed macaques either provocated or non-provocated were considerably high intensity level, including body contact and biting. Feeding contexts (i.e. food exposure, feeding, and contact feeding) become the main situation resulting provocative aggressions. This study suggest that monkeys and human visitors have a potential close contact and could be pathogen transmission.
