Abstract

Abstract: This article presents need analysis as the outset for designing an English for Academic Purposes for participants learning in English Language Education of a private owned university in West Nusa Tenggara. The course was intended as a bridging program to enhance participants’ ability to use academic English for a variety of puposes in particular to accomplish their assignments throughout their study. However, further analysis was carried out to gain deeper understanding about the participants learning needs through only survey, questionnaires and discussion with lecturers. This article further describes the rationale for conducting a need analysis, participans, and the steps of doing need analysis

Abstract

Abstaract: Language as a tool, not as a goal’ becames the most basic principal of designing communicative approach in the learning of foreign language. In this way, teaching foreign language should make students not only have recep competence but also demonstrative one. The problem that mostly comes is merely related to how to design and handle such way in the real teaching. This paper just give san alternative perspective in applying a communic ative approach in learning Arabic.

Abstract

Abstract: This study aims to analyze the diffrences and similarities of ten distinct research on the area of L2, whose parts such as problem formulation, method, result and discussion are compared. The result shows that four out of the ten problem formulations and results of the dissertations have a lot in common. This includes dissertations 4, 6, 8, and 10 which are better as they are more explicit and use logical rationales. Three of the ten dissertations have similarities in terms of title written structure and are worse than the rests because they are longer. The dissertations 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 and 9 share similarities in terms of background or rationales for the studies and are better as they employ relevant studies. The dissertations 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, and 9 are similer in terms of literature review and are better than 1, 2, 7, and 10 as they are more adequate and relevant to the studies. In the aspect of methodology, dissertations 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, and 9 have similarities but are different from dissertations 1, 2, 7, and 10, because the components of the research methodology of the former are more explicit than those of the latter. In terms of discussion section, there are similarities am ong dissertations 2, 3, 8, 9, and 10 but different from the dissertations 1, 4, 5, 6, and 7. The former entail chapters of discussions which support the finding with related theories. This study is hoped to contribute to the betterment of research writing and recommends that another future study employing, for example, meta analysis procedure.

Abstract

Abstarct; Penelitian ini didasarkan pada refleksi teori-regulasi-empiri tentang kurikulum Bahasa Arab PTAI. Mengacu pada konstruksi teori pengembangan silabus dan penghampiran kualitatif model penelitian lapangan, penelitian mencandra potret silabus konstruksi dosen dan inisiasi peneliti berupa proposed-model sebagai alternatif model silabus yang berterima. Capaian dan simpulan penelitian ini adalah (1) tidak ada model dan juga format yang dijadikan acuan atau disepakati dalam penyusunan silabus oleh dosen mata kuliah Bahasa Arab dan juga program studi. Institute tidak menyediakan aturan mengenai konstruksi silabus. Konstruksi mana suka mengindikasikan bahwa dosen dan program studi tidak sartu Bahasa dalam memahami konstruksi silabus yang sesuai aturan. Silabus dikontruksi secara mandiri tanpa koordinasi. (2) model acuan menawarkan model sekaligus format silabus yang mengacu pada silabus paedagogis, teori Bahasa, teori belajar Bahasa, dan teori konstruksi silabus serta mengadaptasi Peraturan Menteri Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan Nomor 49 tahun 2014. Model ajuan (proposed-model) merefleksikan kebutuhan konstruksi silabus yang sesuai regulasi dan kondisi mata kuliah Bahasa Arab di PTAI. Disarankan agar dilakukan review pedoman penyelenggaraan pembelajaran, pedoman turunannya termasuk pedoman penyusunan kurikulum dan silabus. Perlu juga sosialisasi dan upgrading emahaman tentang berbagai konten pedoman yang terkait dengan pembelajaran terutama Rencana Pembelajaran Semester (RPS).

Abstract

Abstract: Reading is of para mount importance among other skills in English, particularly with in the English for Specific Purposes (ESP) instructional landscape. This study aims at developing appropriate communicative skills-based reading materialis for Technical English 1 (TE I) Course. The proposed materials had to go through expert verification and revisions. Then, they experienced field try-outs and revisions to be validated as afinal product. A recycle was done to streng then the validation. There are seven units of reading developed based on Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) method, completed with appropriate learning activities and assessment techniques. The implementation of CTL approach has brought about improvement in the teaching and learning process of TE 1 Course for CESP students.

Abstract

Abstract: Discourse Markers can be defined as expressions which relate discourse segments. Discourse markers analyzed and compared in this study are lexical cohesions in political speeches of the American and Indonesian presidents. In this study, the writer used descriptive qualitative method. The method includes collecting, arranging, classifying, analyzing, and interpreting the data. The data for the English political speeches were taken from Washingtonpast.com and Federal News Service, and those for the Indonesian political speeches were taken from suara Surabaya.net and TEMPO.CO.JAKARTA. The result of this study shows that the lexical cahesions as discourse markers in both languages are generally similar except the position where they accur. In English, lexical cohesions might accur in three positions in a sentence: Initial, medial and final positions with special meaning for each position, while lexical cohesions in Indonesian language might not do as they accur only in the initial and medial positions, and not in the final position. In addition, it also shows that lexical cohesions in English political speeches are used more frequently than those in Indonesian political speeches.
